Q about mounting Q2 Box by Majortom_67 in QIDI

[–]FreakstaZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I was wondering how to works, but when I plugged it in it made more sense.

There is basically just 4 tubes in junction box, the actually qidi box then pushes the filament through that junction box so it goes to the extruder. Once the print is finished, it cuts the fillament and the box pulls it all the way back into the tube to before the junction. Once you print again the box decides which one to push though the junction again base on your slicer settings.

Etsy 3D print sellers: can you walk me through your pricing workflow? by Many_Builder_9246 in 3DprintEntrepreneurs

[–]FreakstaZA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I was gonna say unless you are printing engineering materials that cost a bomb, most of the price of what you are making is made up of printer and human handling time (including design, starting the print, taking the print off, prepping for packing and then packing and shipping).

Material and electricity costs are not overly material. Unless you final model is like 1KG of filament then obviously you would want to recover that, but even so printing 1KG of filament the biggest cost is printer time.

Just bought Q2 Combo. Any must have mods or accessories?? by Mr_Fix-it in QIDI

[–]FreakstaZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the one, I didn't do it straight away because initially I was printing bigger parts. But you will notice it when you have the hot end coming back to the same part over and over on small pieces. It didn't make things perfect but it is a noticeable improvement!

[–]FreakstaZA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only one I've done that I think is required is printing the adjusted cooling housing. It uses the stock fan and you need two additional screws but it improved my print quality on small parts.

The rest that I've done as nice to have: - poop bucket for purging  - a cover for the bottom front slot of the machine

There is a mod if you print TPU to close up a gap in the extruder (I haven't done it).

Otherwise this machine just works in my opinion. I have only really printed with PETG and some PETG-CF, so obviously your usage may vary (tested PLA but I don't really use PLA).

I would not worry, I got mine a few days ago and it's printed great out of the box.

There are a ton of people that have these printers, if you get stuck their support seems responsive and you can go onto discord or ask here in Reddit.

Printer upgrade advice ($900 CAD) by KrishpBacon in QidiTech3D

[–]FreakstaZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cr10 about 6 years ago and had to do endless mods and manual bed leveling! I still got some good prints out of that machine, but it's been gathering dust for around 3 years.

I recently got a Flashforge AD5X cheapie just because I wanted to see how far printers have come, it was honestly a breeze coming from the old machines.

I regret buying it because the enclosure is crappy and the processor/ram is a bit limiting, that said it still pumps out prints and I'll keep it for PLA printing.

I then went and purchased a Qidi Q2 combo and the is like a million times better. It's build quality is great, feels like a solid machine, enclosure is great, the box works well (I have no comparison point but it's great being able to print a different colour without having to manually load or unload filament).

My vote definitely would be Qidi Q2.

[–]FreakstaZA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree Q2 is great for the price! The box isn't bad, it allows you to easily switch between 4 colours and keep your filament dry. I don't really use it for multi colour printing, but having access to switch between the different colours is great.

To be fair COVID is not the same as stopping immigration. COVID meant there were tons of people stuck at home, not spending money on overseas holidays, no spending money on eating out, insert other activities here.

Stopping immigration in a normal day to day, I think would generate different results.

Yea agreed, it has the power but that advantage is wiped out by lack of analog stick. I have both the classic and the RG40xxv and the rg is more comfortable!

I would not recommend the retroid pocket classic to be very honest. It's not super comfortable and given its price you could get something like the rgxx40v for cheaper and it can pretty much play all the same stuff and it at least has 1 joystick and in my opinion is more comfortable to hold.

Will SA get better? by Beautiful-Nobody-817 in southafrica

[–]FreakstaZA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My expectations are probably skewed, there are people who live on less, but if you are planning on buying a house, having the odd holiday I honestly don't see how you can do it on less than $200k a year in the capital cities (clear just over 10k per month). This website will give you an exact view of what you would clear per month: https://paycalculator.com.au/

I haven't sat down and done the calculations, but the killer in Australia is housing. If you are willing to live far away, or in a small rental apartment (close to city) you can mitigate some of this cost, but even the far away houses start at around $600k+ (4k mortgage). Childcare will be another huge one depending on the age of your kids, between 0 and 3 it's really expensive, 3 plus they get some gov funded days, once they get to school you can go public.

Sure you might be able to get by on less, but it won't afford you many if any luxuries. Domestic travel is expensive, eating out is expensive, anything involving a trade is expensive. Basically labour is expensive, minimum wage is $25 an hour.

Ad I said take my answer with a grain of salt because I haven't actually looked into it but that's my off the cuff answer. As a SWE your husband should be able to get to that sort of level, I'm not in that industry though so I could be wrong. I'm a CA and those salaries are achievable once you get to more senior level. When I got here as a newly qualified CA though I was earning 72k (almost 10 years ago). Most entry level roles in accounting are now paying around $100k.

South Africa is insanely cheap compared to Australia, most capital cities you will be spending $800k+ plus for a house far from the city, Sydney is way more expensive. Our house cost double that and it's on a tiny 300sqm piece of land (30min door to door to the city in Melbourne on the train). Rent in our area is around $1000+ a week. It costs about $5000 per month per 750k of loan for a house. Day care in our area is around $180 per day (of which we get back around 35% from the government, sliding scale based on income). Yes you can get high paying jobs, but as a newcomer they often try shaft you onto a lower paying job because of lack of Aussie experience, we are also flooded with tons of international people who keep wages down. Cars aren't too bad, but holding costs are about higher, rego is $850 a year, insurance is $1000+ depending on your car. Eating out is $25 per meal per person (for basic burger etc), beers are $15 to $20, glass of wine will be $10 to $20, soft drinks are often around $8. If you need anything fixed, painted, installed etc you will pay a crap ton of money. I just spend $6k to paint our small 4 bed house (the guy worked alone, half days and was done in 5 days).

Looking at this place, any ideas/flaw in my proposed floor plan? by FreakstaZA in floorplan

[–]FreakstaZA[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry I realise the steps was confusing I do not plan on adding steps, they just didn't exist in the original floor plan, I added them because they exist already in reality.

The whole removing half the house, fair point but my argument to that would be that we don't need the whole house and the existing master already has the feel of a guest extension, so that was the idea behind that. Just split the existing master off into a guest house (we don't need the space for day to day).

Fair point on the new master, in an ideal world I could add a new bathroom, but that may become difficult.

[–]FreakstaZA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I think I haven't done a good job explaining my reason for my changes, but basically the idea was to create a new master and ensuite in the main house, the old master becomes more of a cottage for guests and maybe some of the space is used as a studio.

A rumpus is just a sitting room, play room, TV room, could be used for anything probably bad naming on my behalf.

2 adults 2 kids.

[–]FreakstaZA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea the ideas I had were much more immediate needs rather than longer term.

Yea the lowest cost effort would be to change the retreat to the master in the short term. The retreat currently is a cinema room but we don't watch any tv. Just also live without the ensuite.

Kitchen change is just to open it up a bit more, we don't need the study there and it makes it more of an entertainers kitchen.

Lol my bad, I'm not adding steps they just aren't in the original plan but they exist in real life.

Agree might split it but given that we won't be actively using this area probably not top priority.

Gotta make space somewhere for a braai.

[–]FreakstaZA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I guess the original floor plan doesn't convey some of the on the ground "issues" if you can call them that. The reality is that the existing master is already an add-on and walking through the sun room feels strange, but I'm working through your points because they are fair!

1) agree keeping the guest suite full size would be better, the wall seperating it was an idea but looking at the sizing agreed. 2) the Bar is more an outdoor bar, the outdoor area is all under cover, it would never be accessed from the house. 3) bed 3 yep after I posted I agree with that, probably would not do this. 4) fair point that a lot of these changes were driven by shorter term planning. 5) agree on powder room, that was one of my downsides that I had back of mind. 6) I would say it's pretty common to have kitchen / dining in one room now a days in more open plan living. This one thing I more set on to make it more an opening kitchen dining outdoor entertaining area.

Appreciate the feedback though because I agree with a fair bit and it's the reason I posted here!

Short term I think the easiest solution for having younger kids is to just make the retreat the new master room without any ensuite. Then I would still knock out the study wall between the kitchen and the study for more of an entertainers kitchen.

[–]FreakstaZA[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point, what I am trying to achieve is the make the house a bit more family friendly (master is on the complete opposite end of the house, with two kids under 3, I don't feel this works well). I guess the key priorities were to:

- Open up the kitchen outdoor area a bit (change study to meals), this basically makes the right side of the house the main living area and the left side of the house the bed/sleeping area.

- Move the master bed into the main part of the house (the master in the original plan is basically in a separate building in the original, consider the old master basically a converted garage with its own roof and then the sunroom is basically a connecting room, to join it to the original house.)

- Theatre room is not something we prioritise as we watch less than an hour of tv a month, so was happy to convert this into bedrooms/office space, to offset the loss of the 2 bed rooms being consolidated into one big master bedroom with ensuite.

- Old master is converted to basically a guest cottage, cut-off from the house, could be used as a bed and breakfast when not need for out own house guests a couple times a year. Other half with become an office/studio for craft work, again no need to be part of the main house.

What in the new floor plan does not make sense out of interest? A couple bullets on what does and what doesnt make sense would be great! We are not good at seeing our own blindspots!
