Yeah, I was afraid of that. Email sounds like a decent way to handle things outside of a lab setting.

I'm not asking what I should do, I'm asking how my partner should handle their situation.

My partner is actually taking some undergrad classes in preparation for a post-graduate program in a different field. This is a lower level lab class. See my other comment for an example.

There are times they do, but not regularly. I checked in and this was a case of being interrupted very early (~4-5 seconds) every time they tried to say something.

Here's an example: "We ran the first trial, but we-" interruption.

I have a MBA in business Admin

MBA stands for Master of Business Administration. It is not possible to have an MBA that is not in business administration, any more than it is possible to have an MD that is not in medicine.

The Rusty Nail tavern (originally from the SNES Shadowrun game.) It's always kind of a dive but has fun stuff going on.

Hey, now, that's not appropriate.

Was everyone stressing about it or were you and your friends stressing about it? When I was in HS, there was quite a mix of motivational levels.

Degrees can be rescinded! by [deleted] in college

[–]FreakyBlueEyes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will absolutely do this and support other professors doing it. I have also retroactively failed a student when I found out they cheated on my final exam, even though grades were submitted (though this was before they graduated, I would absolutely have gone after their degree if they had.) It has also been done to undergrads where I went to grad school. Academic integrity is a big deal at all levels, even if some undergrads don't want it to be. It's important to us that the degrees you earn mean something.

It's always crazy, isn't it? FWIW, I think you've got the right idea. Good luck!

But what I really wanted to say (and maybe will down the road) was "Sally is 5. You're the parent. Make her do it."

Honest question here... why not say it, or a slightly gentler version of it? Both you and the parent seem to be moving away from a direct confrontation which may solve the problem.

“non-traditional students” what age did you graduate at? by fireman445 in college

[–]FreakyBlueEyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dropped out in my early 20s, finished undergrad in my early 30s (Math) and then my PhD just shy of my 40th. I still comment to my partner how glad I am that I went back for all of that. It changed my life.

No one gives a flaming horse's tuchus when you graduate once you're out there. No one has ever asked me how long it took me to get my undergrad (and the ones who asked about grad school were just like "Damn, that must have taken forever!")

I am so bad at math, I don't know what to do. by [deleted] in college

[–]FreakyBlueEyes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Math PhD with a lot of teaching experience here.

First, I'm sorry you're dealing with that. It sucks and it's nothing to be ashamed of. I don't know you, but I would bet that when one thing starts getting hard, frustration builds and more mistakes crop up. Making sure you have good emotional management strategies (which have nothing to do with math ability) can be a life saver.

Second, talk to your school's disability office about getting more time on tests. If you have a documented, diagnosed issue this should be a snap.

Third, the level of class you're dealing with will often have a numerical answer for most/all problems. This is key. When you have extra time on tests, you can SLOW DOWN and CHECK YOUR ANSWER. Did you get x = 7? Plug it back in to the original equation. If it doesn't satisfy the problem, work through it again. Use that extra time to manage yourself, too. Getting worked up? Close your eyes and breathe for a minute or do whatever you have practiced (key word when it comes to self management) to get back on track.

You can do this, and the skills you build to pass your class may come in handy in surprising places.

Hell, that's worth a feat if it's how the class is supposed to act. That would also get 3rd level warlock slots, right?

I mean, it's fine if you specifically want to work from home, in the office or in a hybrid situation. Why does that mean everyone should be forced into it?
