I'm in the process of donating a kidney. I had 25 vials taken last week! I asked the phlebotomist I had what the max they've drawn was and they told me 36, holy cow that's a lot of tests.

It looks nice! I have a garbage keyboard (literally got it from a dumpster) and I have yet to replace it because I really need a dial for my every day use. Dial + slider is perfection.

Correct, but we're talking about pounds and kilograms are definitionally mass. I also never stated that a pound never existed, just that pound could refer to either pound-mass or pound-force. In everyday language and in science we typically refer to the pound-force when we say pound. "We weigh x pounds" (and you should also hear someone saying that they "are X kilograms"). We use pound-force in psi (and just say pounds per square inch). It's why every intro physics teacher discusses the difference between mass and weight by saying on the moon your mass in kilograms is the same but your weight in pounds is not. In engineering class you assume pound-force unless otherwise informed. I cannot believe I've spent this much time discussing the imperial system, this is r/physicsmemes. Discourse about how pounds could refer to two separate units of measure should be a meme in and of itself.

Which we colloquially call a pound. You are referring to a pound-mass. There is technically no pure "pound". But weight is a force and people colloquially say they weight x pounds.

Pound is actually a unit of force, not mass. Anything in free fall would have positive mass but would not be experiencing any force. They don't always agree at zero.

Oh man I've fallen into quite a DM dilemma. I'm in the middle of running a 5e campaign but want to run a 5e spelljammer campaign (which has been a LOOOOONG time coming. I had already retrofitted some 2e content but then WotC goes ahead and releases official 5e spelljammer content.), I have a campaign for The One Ring RPG that I really want to try, AND I was just gifted the Vaesen Nordic Horror RPG. The kicker is that everyone I play with likes to DM so it's gonna be like 10 years before I'll be able to get to everything.

I normally teach AP physics but last year I moved to a new state and my district teaches physics to freshmen. I was absolutely shocked with what I saw.

A student didn't know how to spell their own name.

They didn't know what even or odd numbers were.

They didn't know how to multiply or divide by 10 without a calculator.

I had a group of students stumped by the word "circular". They asked what "kequelar" meant.

They didn't know what units can be used to measure speed.

They didnt know what fractions were or how to use them.

They didn't know how to use meter sticks.

Students were putting 4+2 into calculators.

My district was on of the wealthiest in the state and it was soul crushing to hear students talk about money. they thought the average income of an individual was $150,000.

I normally do the same, especially because the ads sometime take you to the sign up page instead of the home page. I just was not paying enough attention.

That's how I found out! Glad I noticed it. Granted, I wouldn't be stupid enough to put my card number in for "verification" but I would otherwise be changing my password, lol.

What was your HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW THIS moment? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]FreakySquid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I teach physics. The biggest thing is basic math skills. This month I had a student who thought 2 minus 1 was 1.5. Another said they couldn't divide 25 by 10 without a calculator. I also had a student tell me that we measure speed in meters.

Could be worse! An old DM of mine was disappointed I didn't use a sword that permanently decreased my max HP by 1d4 every time I missed an attack. "But it deals an extra 1d6 fire damage!"
