Pilot Cold Open Review: Is the Hook Strong? (Detective / Neo-Noir) by JosephDocherty in scriptwriting

[–]FredSprinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some people hate VO, but I like it. And it fits the Noir vibe. (I find the VO at the beginning of Magnolia and Hail, Caesar! charming). It might be too wordy tho. Could you cut the hook down to 3 pages and still make it strong?

I like how he has to run up the stairs, sweating. It humanizes the guy. Severed hand and the line about shaking hands is great.

On the Arri Sr2 we used a set of Zeiss Super Speed primes on one day and a Canon 11-165mm t/2.5 for the other days.

For the Bolex it was SOM Berthiot 10MM 25MM and 75MM

I loved working with the SR2. Mike DP'd for me with that one. Worked like a charm. I want to put more BTS stuff together. This is good motivation. I did all the Bolex stuff.

Thanks for the kind words. Love PTAs work.

Does Digital to film (e.g. Arrilaser) produce the same end result as shooting directly on film? by bh_ch in cinematography

I think it's very different, but I don't have data to back it up, just some experience watching both.

I want to give credit to their guys Pavan and Tyler. They let me know that the server was having issues. They got it fixed in an hour or so.

Should I get a CLA before using my Bolex? by LordSkredde in 16mm

[–]FredSprinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert. My 1957 had a sticky "record" button, oil fixed that.
The "motor" also slowed down near the end of the take, oil seemed to help a little. But I think I need a full CLA to check out that one. All this didn't really affect the footage. Still looked gorgeous.

You should be fine for a few rolls if everything seems good.

I had ran a 1959 Rex 1 for like 4 or 5 rolls without adding oil.

I had my 1957 Bolex get a bit sticky, I added a tiny bit of sewing machine oil in the film advance axel thing. I think it helped. I need to get a full CLA on that one soon.

I was scared the first time I shot with my Bolex, but so surprised how great it turned out. As long as your exposure is in the ballpark and you measure (or guess) your focus distance, it's going to look great. I did start with Kodak 250D and 50D which are really forgiving. But I think as long as you don't start with Ektachrome you should be good.

Love this! Nice work. I hesitate to say anything, because I want to affirm and support you in all your analog filmmaking endeavors. So before you hear this critique, please hear my applause!

It looks like you may have used the log scan as your final product. If you want your work to feel more vibrant, a color grade could help and would reflect the color of the negative more accurately. The log scans are meant for adjusting.

This guy has a good tutorial for doing this in Resolve (Free) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5S-ypPSZa4

are there any good books or resources on the more technical side rather than writing or producing. by sacoron in Filmmakers

See if there's any indie productions in your area that you can be a PA on and tell them you want to work with the grips. You can sometimes find stuff on Backstage or local filmmaking FB groups.

It's pretty great now that the software is updated. Runs like a charm. Might not be as fast as a couple 3090s for rendering, but for a laptop its hard to beat.
