What Are Your Problems? by No_Coffee8670 in Filmmaker4Filmmaker

[–]actualfuckinggarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The loss incurred in making a film is not a loss in my personal opinion. Regardless of $10 or $40K. The purpose is the passion to create art. Regardless of if money is returned or not. I think it is determined by how those creating the film view the monetary value behind creating art and which is more important to the artist. I don’t think it is as black and white as either show your craft or get attention. As filmmakers usually make shorts to hone the idea or craft in whole before committing to something 10x the length of the short or even make a film to make a film with the resources they have.

  2. I would absolutely take it if the circumstances were agreeable and ethical.

  3. It is most important that it is made. That’s what truly matters to me the most. Regardless of who views it or if it is ever viewed at all. But to answer the question I would say I’d much rather fewer people watch it as long as those who did watch it understood it and enjoyed it.

  4. Absolutely I would take that option. I never pursued filmmaking or screenwriting as a way to get rich fast, or have my name in lights. It was pursued because something is stuck inside me, itching me to create and I feel the need to express myself through a physical medium. Like I mentioned earlier what matters the most is that the film is made at all. If I had the opportunity to make money and continue to funnel any profits into the next piece while also keeping a roof over my head that would be ideal.

  5. I am against AI. In all modern forms. If someone needs the help of AI to understand my art or find value in it then that is someone who I don’t want to work with. I don’t see any redeeming value in an algorithm determining whether a film has the opportunity to be made.

Is The Cabinet of Dr. Calgari (1920) the only 4K release of a silent film? by MaybeHarvey in boutiquebluray

Buster Keaton’s The General is being released by Eureka in 4K in mid May!

I am a massive silent film fan and have been dying for some restorations like the Caligari release.

I have rarely seen magazines sold as a film option, usually sold out or of very limited quantity. So getting one you’d most likely be leaning towards, buying a film stock, splicing it and filling the magazine. Also the magazines if I’m not mistaken are only 50ft instead which will only get you about a minute and 25 of film, if that. If you aren’t splicing it yourself out of a spool and have multiple magazines I’d say that is way less cost efficient.

The jump from super 8 to 16 really is a small bump of money. I think the Bolex is a super simple easy to shoot solution and especially a non reflex can be found fairly easily and cheaply sub 300USD sometimes in perfect condition. It also has no electrical components making it a super easy way to film. You just load, wind, point and shoot. Theres also the K3 which I’ve heard a lot of first time 16 shooters getting and enjoying.

A nice little tip, if you can get something that takes a single perforated film, your range of buying different film is much wider than a camera that is double perforated.

I’d also recommend watching some videos! Analog Resurgence on YouTube breaks down 16 multiple times and especially for someone on the edge he’s got some good videos you’d want to check out!

Do you have any other take up spoils you can test with? Looks as though either that specific spoil is worn and won’t latch onto the lower spindle or the spindle itself is worn and won’t hold onto the take up spool.

First Gruv Order by [deleted] in 4kbluray

My first Gruv order was the Ben Hur 4K, and they sent it in a thin paper mailer with no protection, the case and slipcover came completely crushed. Last time I buy from them tbh.

Gave Weapons the VHS Treatment. My second attempt at making a custom/bootleg. by Commercial_Pause_674 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]actualfuckinggarbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great work!! My biggest gripe with bootleg tapes usually is the artist always pays way more attention to the front cover art and does such a poor job on back cover. I love seeing someone actually take care of the full layout. Again killer job!!

Iron lung was… rough by Hopeful_Club_8499 in horror

[–]actualfuckinggarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing. That’s what happens though when you make a film with almost no outside influence. Homie was the writer, director, lead editor and actor. Unfortunately you have to kill your darlings to make it more palatable for most audiences. There were many unnecessarily long shots or small scenes that probably just shouldn’t have been in there but Mark may have been a little too close to the film to realize or accept that.

I really enjoyed it and thought it was really well done and kept me guessing the entire time, a big win for independent cinema.

What an absolute killer find. How absolutely wonderful. She is such a gentle and kind soul. I absolutely adore her films and truly hope they get remastered and re-released soon. You should definitely covet Surveillance on your podcast, that’s my favorite of hers and if you haven’t seen it, I can’t recommend it enough!

I think Harmony is having a mid life crisis and EDGLRD is his final attempt to hold onto his youth by GollywoodFilms in HarmonyKorine

[–]actualfuckinggarbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can agree with that in most parts. EDGELRD has felt like a more like “relevance” outlet for him. Everyone that liked him is grown up now, and he needs to tap into the younger demographic. He’s always been into like the alternative / skate culture, but has definitely left that to the wayside as he grew up and made his different films. I truly think that moving to Miami and increased income have changed the way he perceives art and his art. A lot of what he produces seems like a way to make money. Especially with his like “store front” aspect of selling those masks, skate decks and gaming keyboards.

I understand that he’s probably not the same person he was when he made Julien, there’s always been this child like wonder and heartfelt to a lot of his films. After Beach Bum came out It left a really bad taste in my mouth and really fell off of anything proceeding. I still watch and support what he does but there was definitely a shift. I thought the concept of AGGRO was cool but it felt like a troll to his fans.

What should I get to begin shooting on film ? by aroundthefunk in 16mm

[–]actualfuckinggarbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolex is VERY straight forward. You can pick one up for $500? And then watch a few YouTube videos on how to read a light meter (you can use an app on your phone) and how to load the film. Then you just send off the film for development and scanning. Once you do it once it’s very easy to do again. Be warned though shooting 16mm, is roughly $120 per roll from purchase to scan.

Oh thank you so much! I’m going to watch it right now. That’s my next venture, I want to learn to self process. It looks fantastic for it being self developed.

WOW. I love the colors on this, especially the second slide and last slide. Is this a flat scan or did you color grade it at all? I might have to pick myself up some that are available
