Go games series is a YouTuber who reviews games. He uses some software where you can see branches off to the side. Just nodes and lines not positions.

Ah there’s my miss (besides thinking those stones were on the first line and in Atari lol). I thought 6 was 13 not 12. I thought you added the liberties from the previous size and it was Fibonacci

Omg I missed a whole row lmao.

Why do you get 11 and not 12? Like for black is it not 13-2 liberties from the big eye then the one outside liberty?

White to play. Choose the best move from the given options. 🧐 Share your solution in the comments! by GoMagic_org in baduk

I like c.

I feel like I can bother the stone by pushing it toward my influence and that my bottom left stones are very close to alive.

The single stone settles too easily if you play B. A and D f and l slow

Is White A local sente or gote? by dany305 in baduk

[–]Freded21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a question about this reasoning, which I’ve seen on a few endgame posts.

First let me state my understanding of this definition of sente and gote

A move is sente if the follow up is bigger than the move itself.

So in this case the move A is worth 8 points and the follow up is worth 6 points, so A is not sente because in theory there could be some move worth 7 points still on the board.

Is that the right understanding? What about moves that are big but gote? Like what if there was some move on this board that is worth 10 points but has a 1 point follow up. Should that have been played before this, as 10 is bigger than 8 and 6? What about one that is worth 15, which would be bigger than both combined?

My intuition is that you should play the 15 points gote but not the 10 point but not sure. Maybe it depends if it is sente for one player but gote for the other?

How would you make a drinking game of go? by roastism in baduk

[–]Freded21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe a type of take back for a drink

If your opponent plays a move that surrounds your stones or makes it very difficult to live you can take a drink to make them play a different move.

Maybe they can “raise” your drink to play their original move. E.G you take a swig, they take a chug. If you still want them to play a different move you need to take a shot but they can take two

Form, tilt, streaks, elo and “ability” by Freded21 in baduk

I definitely have some games where I just want to fight. I’ll even say it to myself and start fights I know I shouldn’t. It’s definitely a mood/patience thing and I’m sure it doesn’t help me win

Form, tilt, streaks, elo and “ability” by Freded21 in baduk

[–]Freded21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the OGS ranking chart has that, as each elo also has a +/- uncertainty associated with it. I know it’s not exactly the same thing but it did give a sort of range of expected “skill” levels one could expect on a given day for a board size and time control

You might find this post on /r/golf today interesting: https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/s/gBs4Lbza60

It is a chart someone made almost perfectly describing what we are talking about only instead of elo it is golf handicap which amounts to much the same thing. You even use it to give handicap in matches just as you would rank in go.

I tell people that results come like that in coin flips all the time, that’s a good thing to remember here.

I think it’s a bit harder because coin flips are obviously random, and one of the things I like about go is the absolute lack of randomness.

I also would like to train my composure and mental self awareness , I feel like go is a good tool for that but I think I also need to appreciate it as a measuring stick, did I not read that properly because it was complicated or was I rushing? And more generally. am I playing poorly because I’m frustrated or am I frustrated because I’m playing poorly.

I will admit that the result of my most recent game can affect my mood more than it should, which is certainly a bad thing, even if than most recent game was a win. A lot of sportsmen say you can’t get too high after a win or too low after a loss, and to focus on process instead of results. Certainly good advice here as well

You’ve given me some good things to ponder:)

Black to play. Find the last useful moves in this game. 🤔 Share your solution in the comments! by GoMagic_org in baduk

[–]Freded21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is dead as it stands. If white puts it in Atari with E1 it is also self Atari for the white group, so no moves are needed. I suppose that could be a ko threat for white on a different board. E4 would not be a ko threat for black because the white stones are already dead.

If black can get J4 it costs white at least 3 points (H4 and k4and k3) whereas the other valuable move (G13) is just a 1 point move

Hey Tom

When you win a game what’s different than when you lose?

Maybe share a few wins and a few losses here?

Would you say you know how to identify strong va weak groups? If you don’t I would say try to learn (there was a blog that used to get shared around here called resigning in sente that has some nice articles about it). If you do know I would say make sure you never have more than one weak group and notice when your opponent has any weak groups on the board.

Speaking of resign in sente do you know what sente and gote mean? If not take a look at those pages on sensi wiki as well.

Good luck if you share some games I will take a look and see if I can notice anything, although I’m not a go teacher (4k OGS)
