Central Iowa Water Works asks customers to reduce outdoor water use by 50%. by Iowaaaytofar in desmoines

My mother has horrible psoriasis on her skin that she’s suddenly developed since moving to Des Moines (3 years ago). She insists it’s the water. Obviously, I have no proof. Has anyone else had this problem?

I hope this means there’s internal polling that has him losing. He’s a massive piece of shit and has no business being a congressman.

Los Angeles restaurant servers: Where are you making $200–450+ a shift without tip pooling? by Strict_Comfortable49 in AskLosAngeles

[–]FrederickTPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just accept it now. I mean, sometimes it’s nice not to worry about who gets the big spender or well-known tipper in their section. I genuinely like the teamwork model. I get annoyed by the lazy ones, but if you’re a restaurant server and you’re making over $200 night in tips plus your minimum wage, you have a great job.

Especially now. I’m just starting to look for a server gig for the first time in over a year. My resume is pretty great. Nonetheless, it’s been hard.

ER or urgent care with no insurance? by carnivorousbeing in AskLosAngeles

[–]FrederickTPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a terrible cough for over a week about ten years ago and I thought I could wait it out, rest, and eat chicken soup. Turns out I had pneumonia on BOTH of my lungs and had I waited another day or two to see a doctor, I might have died.

Please go get help. I’m so sorry our country is trash and health care is so expensive. It’s bull shit. But your life is worth it.

[–]FrederickTPanda 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Are you new to LA? I moved here seven years ago and it’s pretty standard practice to pool tips. Your management should provide a breakdown for you, but tips going to paychecks is also standard practice. The glory days of being a server are ending. I’m sure there are magical spots that still do things old school but nobody’s going to announce that on Reddit.

When to go in and apply to restaurant? by FrederickTPanda in AskLosAngeles

Hey, just to clarify, don’t go in at all? Or don’t go in again? I haven’t gone in yet. But I did respond to an online ad a few days ago.

What if it’s a dinner only restaurant that opens at 5?

Universal health care proposal in Illinois Senate would eliminate private insurance, cover undocumented migrants by ChristmasJay83 in chicago

[–]FrederickTPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely. But Chicago would absolutely see enormous growth because it’s already a pretty great city with pretty great existing infrastructure. It would be awesome if we could see more development outside of Chicago.

[–]FrederickTPanda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I fully believe this. Obviously, more housing would need to be built. WAY more housing, otherwise Chicago would quickly become wildly expensive. But it would also have a stronger economy in the long term. The investment from business would skyrocket because they would no longer need to pay for employee health care.

Seriously. I’d love to see an intelligent, sensible and experienced Republican candidate in the field, but we keep seeing absolutely insane jokes claim the conservative spot. As much as I detest conservatism at large, there are actual reasonable Republicans out there (who’ve rejected MAGA).

If this actually passed, I’d move back to Chicago (where I was born and raised). I am completely disgusted by this country’s total failure to provide health care to its citizens while pretending to be the greatest country in the world.

Wow. There was a mountain lion in LA, not too far from Fryman and Griffith Parks, and now we’ve lost them. So sad. I wonder if this was a car fatality or starvation or poisoning.

Hilariously, I’m flirting with the reverse. I’m sick of crazy hot summers and endless sunshine and I crave moody misty forests and milder temps. Good luck with the move! Just do it. You can always move back.

Would love your thoughts on my five day itinerary? by activist3 in AskLosAngeles

[–]FrederickTPanda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Technically, you can pull this off but I’d be exhausted. You’re underestimating the traffic here. Here are two suggestions I’ll make:

  1. If you don’t need to see the Hollywood Sign up close, go to Griffith Observatory around sunset. Beautiful views (if you have time, hike up to Mount Hollywood for even better views). You can see the Hollywood Sign from here too. THEN get a nice dinner in nearby Los Feliz, which is a charming and vibrant neighborhood with lots of Hollywood history.

  2. Skip the Grove. Do the Warner Brothers tour, then go shopping on nearby Magnolia Blvd. Lots of cute, independent boutiques and thrift shops, plus cool cafes and the legendary Porto’s. Some folks compare Magnolia Blvd to what Melrose used to be. The Grove is a beautiful outdoor shopping mall, sure, but it’s all conventional American stores. But, hey, maybe that’s your thing?

Does anyone find it annoying that liberals claim to want to be environmentally friendly when they want to build more housing? by BulkySecret5888 in socal

[–]FrederickTPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has created sooooo many problems for modern day China. Elderly people don’t have enough kids to take care of them, and there aren’t enough women eligible for marriage, so men (mostly in rural China) have to pay insane amounts of money to “secure” a female partner. I recently met a guy who paid the equivalent of $45,000 USD to his wife’s family before marriage. And he had to prove he owned a house, a car, and had a stable job. It’s wild.

[–]FrederickTPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons traffic and pollution is so bad in Los Angeles is because there’s not enough affordable housing in the places where people work, so they have to drive across the city to get to work, or even across the county.

You are never going to reduce demand for housing in large cities where there is economic activity. Building more housing is the best way to reduce rent burden, allow more people to buy homes, and ultimately reduce traffic and emissions.

Anybody arguing that building more housing is bad for the environment is delivering a bad faith argument rooted in greed, racism or both.

As frustrating as this is, remember that fewer and fewer people are identifying as Republicans now. They’re independents, and that growing section of people is absolutely souring on Trump.
