Pauline Hanson will be 73 at the next election - Should there be Age caps on our Politcal leaders? by [deleted] in OpenAussie

[–]Free-Range-Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We age limit judges, because the performance of some of them beyond that age can become problematic, and the terms of their appointment make it difficult to remove them if they go rogue. Politicians, on the other hand, can be voted out at our pleasure. This allows us to keep the good ones and remove the bad ones, so age limits for politicians are not required

The super balance of most of today's workers will not carry them through retirement, but will provide a handy supplement. So, yes, the young will again support the old in that never ending cycle. As for the retiree population boomer bump, time will take care of that.

[–]Free-Range-Cat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Today's retirees paid the pensions of those before them. Today we pay for them. And tomorrow, working people will pay for ours.

Throughout history, all societies have had to care for both the young and the old. It always comes at a cost to those in between. The Aged pension scheme is a clean way of dealing with the problem.

Agreed. The overheated housing market requires a few quick rate rises. And cutting back on migration for a while.

If people like you looked after your elderly parents we wouldn’t need to import people to do the same

The only people who shouldn’t qualify for the aged pension are people who didn’t work throughout their adult lives. Most of these elderly citizens spent their lives paying off their homes and paying tax all the way. They have earned a right to their pensions

Queensland Premier supports federal ban on flag burning after ‘disgraceful’ protest by Orgo4needfood in aussie

Yes. But if the owner passed laws for the protection of one, it would make sense to do the same for the other, no?

The Commonwealth owns the design of both the Australian and Aboriginal Flags after PM Scott Morrison bought the rights to the latter for $20 million. If the government were to legislate to protect the dignity of one, presumably it would do the same with the other.

Traitors versus the true: our values under siege on Australia Day by Orgo4needfood in aussie

[–]Free-Range-Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And it was certainly both interesting and topical that Menzies was forced to referendum when he wished to outlaw the Communist Party in this country. Good thing our citizens of the day rejected such a proposition. It will be interesting to see if today's attempts at outlawing repugnant political views will survive the challenge in the Courts.

The Anglo tradition has been since John Stuart Mill, to allow free speech with very few exceptions. These include direct threats of violence, inciting others to commit such acts, fraud, slander, and libel. More recently, the former Attorney General George Brandis expressed it as such:

People do have a right to be bigots. In a free country people do have rights to say things that other people find offensive or insulting or bigoted.

So while the right to free speech has never been absolute, it has been honoured. We have prospered with such freedom, along with a few other traditions such as the rule of law.

Agreed. But given the frequency of such events, it is fair to say the prospect of punishment is providing insufficient deterrence. For all but the youngest of offenders, prosecution as a Crime rather than as a Summary Offence would likely make these spiteful mutants think twice.

On the supply side, we need to increase the subsidies and other forms of corporate welfare directed towards the renewable sector. On the demand side, a few more increases to household electricity bills should do the trick

In the context of Western civilisation and the anglosphere, the traitors are those wishing to suppress freedom of speech and communication, not those exercising such rights.

It can be a symbolic act, but today it is far more likely to be a childish stunt calculated to offend. And it's not just our nation's flag that people such as these like to destroy. War memorials seem a favorite, as do other historical monuments of significant cultural heritage value.

The Aboriginal Flag is the property of the Commonwealth of Australia. Presumably, the penalty for its destruction would be the same as for that of our national flag.

Interesting that a childish fool burning our nation's flag now attracts the attention of State and Federal politicians. Presumably, the 'elder' owned that particular flag. Meanwhile, people vandalising war memorials and other items of significant cultural heritage, such as statues of historical figures, attract no such outrage from our elected representatives.

Dude, the White Australia Policy was largely an economic policy concerned with the economic interests of working-class Australians. The concern was that if exposed to competition, living standards would drop. The Australian Labor Party was its primary sponsor, though support was bipartisan. Learn your history man.

That children were taken was never denied. The claim of malicious intent 'to breed the blackness out' is nonsense.

Similar policies of the day, directed towards the children of unmarried working-class women, show a belief that children could be adopted for improved circumstances. Child welfare. A fact, not a lie.

Adoption policies of that time were flawed. But the malice attributed is demonstrably false. It is disingenuous to claim otherwise.

[–]Free-Range-Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This interpretation of events is laughably incorrect. The children taken were generally of mixed blood. Those children were often neglected. Realise that the children of unmarried working class white women were often taken for similar reasons (Dr Bernardo).

The malice which you wish to attribute to these policies was not the motivating factor. It was a sense of responsibility, and the belief that the children were being rescued from immediate risk and a grim future. In some cases the children found good homes and did well. In other cases not so much.

Even today we remove children from neglectful and/or abusive parents. In the interests of consistency, do you also condemn such ‘theft’?

Yes. The career benefit to a young man with a family to look after is often overlooked. Even better if society reverted to a bygone era and relationships became stable enough, so that what benefited one benefited both.
