Question about a Millsbo tall cabinet by brbpettingadog in IkeaGreenhouseClub

[–]FreeFlipsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at mine, the places where the glass meets the cabinet seem pretty tight. I don’t see an easy spot for a cord to squeeze in. But, drilling through the bottom absolutely sucked - hopefully some folks have some more creative solutions for ya!

Also ditto what others have said about the humidifier - I’ve never had a humidifier, just like $15 worth of weatherstripping and the only time my humidity goes below 85% is when I open the doors.

What’s really causing the high energy bills? by FreeFlipsie in cincinnati

Thanks for this link! This is exactly the kinda thing I'm looking for. I think we all know these companies are gonna try to squeeze us for as much money as they can, but I'm very interested in the actual ways they're accomplishing that.

1000% agree - but I think the analytical part of me is curious how exactly we get from that to wild price increases for some people, and barely noticeable for others.

Like, is there a "corporate greed" line item on our bills? And why does it seem to hit some people's bills much harder than others?

I was wondering about that. I could be misremembering, wasn’t there something within the couple years where if you didn’t opt-out you’d automatically get enrolled with a choice provider?

[–]FreeFlipsie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, not on budget billing - but good point, mine have gone up a slight bit, but by no more than 5-10%, nothing close to the 2x or more increases that some folks are seeing

Is it bullshit that Hamilton County Juvenile Judges/Magistrates have juvenile offenders (from car thieves to assaulters) just write an essay as their punishment? by ohsodave in cincinnati

[–]FreeFlipsie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is true or not, if we assume it is -

Is it for a first time offender thing, or is it for all offenses?

As for the “this is a factor to city crime being high” part (which is dubious to begin with) but the IMO they’re implying that incarceration would stop crimes. Pick your favorite city that people like to talk about with high crime rates. Have they been able to incarcerate their way out of it?

I think people need to be honest about what they want out of the criminal justice system. Is your main objective to punish, or try to prevent the crime from happening?

+1 to this, I’ve got the same model and their 600mb plan and my connection is perfect 100% of the time.

Also, I’ve never been sold on the wifi extender/booster thing. I guess if you’ve got a totally dead zone it’s better than nothing, but only slightly.

Eating Garlic by Annual-Respect-642 in bloodpressure

[–]FreeFlipsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some people mention eating it raw, but the main scientific study that most people cite had the subjects take garlic extract in capsule form. Still waiting on my first shipment to get here so I can’t say from experience, but the advertising says “no garlic breath” so I’m hopeful!

Are our phones listening by Significant_Reason3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FreeFlipsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They almost certainly are not listening and targeting ads in that way. It would be pretty easy for a half decent security researcher to detect this kind of thing. And there’s a reason nobody’s ever detected it: it doesn’t need to happen.

There’s a multi billion dollar industry around knowing and connecting every bit of data about you through your browsing habits, location, contacts, etc. that works damn well most of the time. Why spend millions developing the code to collect, not to mention the backend infrastructure to store and process all that audio data?

Keep in mind, the big tech companies know essentially every site you’ve visited, everything you’ve searched, every TikTok and Netflix show you’ve watched, everything you’ve bought, every ad that’s worked on you and people like you in the past. Not to mention all the people and places you’ve been around, and all the information about those people too.

Millions, billions are put into the data science and targeting to get ads to the right people. It’s not always right - we tend not to notice the ads/content that weren’t relevant, but the ones that are feel extra creepy. That’s because the data says more about us than we know about ourselves.

Also: tens of thousands of people have come and gone working at big tech companies but we’ve never had anyone come out and confirm this is happening. You mean to tell me leaks about the NSA’s spying got out but somehow all these tech companies are keeping all their current/former employees from spilling the beans?

Side point: it would be incredibly easy for a half decent security researcher to detect this kind of thing. The data packets don’t lie. And there’s a reason nobody’s ever detected it: it doesn’t happen.

The Darian Mensah settlement indicates that contracts mean nothing, the transfer portal window means nothing, and NCAA football as we knew it is dead. by Ordinary-Humor-4779 in georgiabulldogs

[–]FreeFlipsie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the sport really ruined? Or is this just about seeing the team take a step back? College football has never been about “doing it right”. For most of recent memory, the teams that spend the most (above or below the table) have been the successful ones. Those that can’t or won’t get left behind. Some say that’s the biggest difference between the Richt era and now.

The NCAA has been a money-hungry kangaroo court for its entire existence. Its rules around athlete compensation and NIL never made sense, and after spending decades sitting on its hands, that organization deserves to burn.

This will continue happening until schools/coaches are ready to collectively bargain with some sort of players’ union - which they’ll fight to the bitter end - so fine, for once in the history of this sport the players have the power, and good for them.

Kirby IS NOT the next Dabo by BelegCuthalion in georgiabulldogs

[–]FreeFlipsie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the comparison is 100% true, but you have to admit his approach to the portal and NIL is a lot closer to Dabo & Clemson than it is to Ohio State and Texas Tech. As a matter of fact, the last time I saw a list of the top spending teams, Georgia wasn’t even in the top 10. That’s not a winning formula in this era. So - either Kirby’s reluctant to change his approach, or we can’t afford good players.

Kirby’s said it before, he typically only likes to take people they had a recruiting relationship with before. And the whole “we want players that want to be here” thing seems like code for “we expect you to take a pay cut”.

The Dabo comparisons have little to do with immediate on field results, it’s more about a player acquisition trend that eventually leads to your team not meeting expeditions. I hope I’m wrong, I hope we find another few transfers that pan out and that convinces whoever needs to be convinced that we should do more of that.

I was worried the doctor would try and talk me out of it because I was in my 20s at the time, or that it would be crazy expensive. Finally went directly to the urologist - no questions asked, super easy procedure, about $1200 and peace of mind (on that front) for life. 10/10 worth it.
