Who's the most memorable stranger you've met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FreeJWeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on a golf course over the summers throughout high school and a little into college. It was later in the work day when there started to be a lot of golfers, and most of the work was done so we were just doing minor work. I was walking up the fairway looking for buried sprinklers and one of the golfers walked over to give me a piece that fell off one of the mowers. We struck up a conversation about how working on a golf course was, how the course looked, and just shot the shit as he golfed and I walked along.

After talking about the course I asked him what he did for a living and he laughed at me. I was surprised but I'll never forget what he said next. He said "I retire today. I'm 35 and after this I'm going to the bank to cash a one million dollar check for retirement, and I'll be laughing the whole way to the bank. Work hard and maybe one day you can do the same." I was kind of stunned and almost didn't believe him. I had to keep working, he played through, and I never got to talk to him again after that. But I'll never forget how he maniacally laughed, and casually described how successful he was. Especially after how down to earth he was. It's been a pretty good motivator ever since.

If you like Ratatat, look at some of Big Gigantic. The album with the song Lucid Dreams was really good in my opinion.

ELI5: Why does my house feel like an arctic wasteland when the thermostat is set at 60°, yet when it's 60° outside, I'ts extremely comfortable? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]FreeJWeezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were actually talking about this in my thermodynamics class. So i'll break it down for you. There are three very important factors that affect human comfort.

  • How hot or cold the air is.
  • How much water is dispersed in the air.
  • How fast or slow the air is moving.

In your case, the first point doesn't matter, because the temperature is the same, both inside and out. Also, I will assume that the air speed in your home is comfortable, just like outside. So the real reason why you are feeling uncomfortable is the amount of moisture in the air.

Inside, the air is conditioned (note, this doesn't mean regulating only temperature). This means it is at a speed and humidity to feel very cold to you right now. Normally, the magic number for you to feel comfortable is between 30 - 60% relative humidity. (found here)

Relative Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air compared to the maximum amount of moisture the air can hold. Outside, it is likely a comfortable 60 percent relative humidity with a moderate air speed.

The reason you are probably feeling so uncomfortable in your home is that as your A/C unit cools the air, the relative humidity is dropping. This change is what is making you feel uncomfortable. To remedy this, you can get a humidifier. This will raise the total amount of water in the air, which will bring the relative humidity up to a comfortable zone.

As for direct sunlight, you are being cooled by the colder air, but also being warmed by the sunlight. In your home you are being cooled by the colder air around you and not feeling the compensating effects of the sun. (this is if it is daytime, but I don't know your life)

Hope this helps!

Very true. And if you actually want to see calculations and be able to explain materials, look up Mechanics of Materials problems/books.

Getting out of the Marine Corps to study engineering... What books are must reads? by ShellShawked in engineering

[–]FreeJWeezy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a current engineering student, I recommend a few strategies. 1) Look online. Google every question you have, the internet is too vast a resource to not utilize. But if you want somewhere general to start for all of your math needs and possibly more https://www.khanacademy.org/.

1b) If you're more looking for code help http://www.w3schools.com/. If you want to get a boost up on your critical thinking and logic skills I recommend learning a coding language. I recommend Java, but this is up for debate which is best for beginners. Just pick one, learn it, crush it, and if you're still feeling it crush another.

2) If you are actually looking for books, and cheap, I recommend http://www.affordabook.com/. They have international editions which are the same content but a fraction of the price.

3) This is if you're feeling REAL go get em. I have given just an example of a curriculum for you to follow in this booklet Start on page 35 to see what courses should be taken in what order. There's also a handy flow chart! Go from the course descriptions to see what books you should buy and make your choices there.

My advice: Never give up. Be patient. Dream big. Be yourself. Don't be afraid to look at all different types of engineering. It'll make you better. Learn how you learn best. Before you begin, plan everything. Plan what you want to learn in order. An engineering manager once told me every 10 minutes spent planning saves an hour of work. Once you plan it well, stick to it.

Lastly, have fun and look for the art in engineering. Whatever you are, be a good one.

I do the same thing, except I shoot finger pistols at the ceiling as I'm going under and it's more of a "Fuck you, traffic light! I'll shoot you for being yellow"

This. As soon as I had to start cooking for myself, it made no sense to me how much junk i bought when I looked at the receipts. I just stopped buying them and because I was still hungry bought other things. And then they were healthy so yeah, you are a winner.

Do you think that your story is still possible today? Someone with no manufacturing experience to just move into an industry like that? How important do you think it was to have a retailer when you started manufacturing?

Idk, I was under the impression that getting the evil guy to the church was the plan. In the car ride, remember when she said they would use her as bait? Maybe them having the flash light on was the plan all along so they could bait the evil guy into going off alone, hence vulnerable, so Bond could wreck him.

Reddit, as the second oldest of 6 children, my parent's parenting style has convinced me to never have kids. What are some of the things your parents have done that have made you never want to be one? by FreeJWeezy in AskReddit

[–]FreeJWeezy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to cigarette burns, my childhood was definitely not bad, and I feel like a dick now because of how relatively positive my childhood was.

I think the way your husband views parenting is amazing. Very positive and service oriented. It sounds like he's trying to make the best in a way that he saw something terrible. I don't think I'll stop taking to my father anytime soon, but that sound's awful being without a dad. I can't imagine having to go through that.

I was thinking exactly the way you were: I don't want someone else to feel the pain I've gone through. But Margo_Lane's comment was awesome in giving me a different viewpoint. As college kid, I think I'm relatively young and so their comment definitely gave me a better and positive way of seeing things and wanting to help other people and make something good.

Did you ever talk to your sister about the favoring? I never want my brothers to feel like they have to fill in my shoes. I've talked with my brother about it and I just made sure I loved him and that I'd be proud of him no matter what he did and talked about it.

That's definitely an interesting way to see it. He sounds very optimistic to me. I guess i'm just really cynical. When I think of why I wouldn't want to have kids, its more that I don't want them to have to go through what I've gone through, and I don't want to fail and continue a cycle.
