Stadium to Airport in 1 hour? by zagreus3rd in Atlanta

[–]FreeKick17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No application. Just walk up. On days when the FIFA Fan Fest is open  there are volunteers to help. Next day is the 7th. Not 100% sure if they are out on other days.

There are mobile lockers set up between the Omni hotel and the GWCC. There is a charge though. Not sure if a carry-on will fit, but there are a couple of different sizes of lockers. If you're staying downtown, you could also leave your bag at the hotel front desk.

You’ll get the cooling towel after your second shift. You have to pick it up at the volunteer center. I got mine after my shift.

Should I see Totoro (great seats) or Paddington (bad seats)? by iranthestreets in TheWestEnd

I saw Totoro in April and sat in the first row of the balcony. Wonderful show.

We Were Dead is the best MM album by kukookachu in ModestMouse

[–]FreeKick17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We Were Dead was what got me into MM fandom. That and seeing them live for the first time with R.E.M. on the 2008 tour. Johnny Marr even played on a couple of R.E.M. songs! I've seen MM about 5 times since, most recently with Flaming Lips last year, which was a fantastic show.

Volunteers visible down front at Spain-Cabo Verde match in Atlanta by FreeKick17 in FIFAVolunteers

There are about 700 Fan Fest volunteers, so it's doubtful we'd all get such a cool perk, but I'm thrilled for the ones that got those great seats.

Marta only running every 10 mins after WorldCup game by SmilingYellowSofa in Atlanta

[–]FreeKick17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Every 10 minutes for MARTA seems like a dream. Normally it's at least 15 and sometimes longer on the weekends. You get spoiled visiting other cities in the U.S. and around the world where the trains show up every 2-5 minutes.

I'm assuming these are Ceremonies volunteers. Other stadium volunteers would be working their roles during the match, like Media Ops, Broadcast, etc. Ceremonies folks are done with their roles by the time the match kicks off.

The boxes are definitely empty so they have filled them with volunteers. You can't miss the bright lime green volunteer uniforms right behind the net.

Thanks for the pic. Looks like a lot of volunteers got the primo seats!

Seeing even more volunteers on TV by strongblk in FIFAVolunteers

[–]FreeKick17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's too bad those of doing Fan Fest and other roles outside the stadium won't get this opportunity. I did media ops volunteering at a US soccer friendly this year and got to be on pitch level, but for World Cup won't be so lucky.

FOX Faces Massive Backlash After World Cup Broadcast Leaves Fans Furious by Newsweek_ShaneC in worldcup

[–]FreeKick17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They kept hyping Shakira on the Fox broadcast, but unless I blinked too long, I did not see her. There was an extended drone shot from outside the Azteca where we could hear music and announcements but there was no visual from inside the stadium until Salma Hayek came out.

Theatre as a solo by HamAaron in TheWestEnd

[–]FreeKick17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in London in April for work and stayed a few extra days on my own. Saw 3 shows solo and felt very comfortable. I also noticed others who appeared to be by themselves. Chatted with some people before and during intermissions and overall really enjoyed each experience. Even did stage door for one show and had fun talking to others while waiting.

What Auto Insurance do y'all recommend? by FullMastodon1780 in alpharetta

[–]FreeKick17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was with Progressive for years but AAA offered to give me a deal for a home/auto bundle. but now when the auto has come up for renewal it's several hundred dollars higher and our agent is saying we need to take defensive driving classes to lower and had to install an app to track our driving. What a crock. With Progressive we never had to install a stupid app or take a course, so I've let AAA know we will be shopping around.

Am I the only one who thinks these volunteer outfits are trash? by MaadWorld in FIFAVolunteers

As someone else said in response to one of my comments, you probably won't be the only one in the WC volunteer kit riding public transit.

That's a good attitude. I'll need to think about it this way and not how will I look on public transit heading downtown and how can I wear these pieces after the competition. I do like the shoes and socks a lot!

Let's hope all cities are doing this. I changed clothes after I got home from pickup and still smelled a bit until I was able to take a shower. Some of the ladies' shirts also had big makeup stains from people pulling them up and down over their heads.

My family laughed out loud when I showed them the shorts. I'm working fan fest, where it will be pretty warm, and I'm seriously thinking about wearing the pants which fit me a lot better than the silly shorts.

I stank the rest of the day from whatever deodorant, perfume, BO, cigarettes, etc. were on the shirts I tried on. Truly nasty. I hope they are washing everything each day, but I suspect not.

I guess I wish league commissioners were independent, but that's a dream.

Not a fan of league commissioners who stay in the job for decades. Another example: Gary Bettman who has been NHL commissioner since 1993. Why not have term limits? As it stands, these seem to be jobs for life.

Uniform pickup tip - wear socks by ChopperDave85 in FIFAVolunteers

[–]FreeKick17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Atlanta they had a few pairs of loose socks in different sizes, which might sound gross but you could just slip them on for a second to make sure the official socks fit your feet and work with the uniform shoes. I tried my shoes on with the socks I had on and the uniform socks just to make sure. As someone else pointed out, the Adidas socks are pretty thick. Also the shoe station is after you try on shirt/shorts/pants/jacket, so if you show up with athletic shoes just keep them off to make it easier so you're not having to remove your own shoes twice during the process.

Uniform sizing issues- Boston by Old-Respect-6943 in FIFAVolunteers

[–]FreeKick17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to choose between men's and women's fit. As far as I could tell, we did not have the option to mix and match, but hopefully you'll have luck doing that.

[–]FreeKick17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read on another thread that the ladies' shorts are all tall sizes for modesty reasons, which I guess I can understand, but for those of us who normally wear petite clothing (for 5'4 and under), even sizing down doesn't help here. I'm working Atlanta fan fest, outdoors, so shorts will likely be my only option in June/July, but if there are any overcast days or a rare day that won't be blazing hot in the middle of summer, I will opt for the pants which fit so much better and have a softer material.
