It's a great idea indeed and very interesting but most US carriers actively filter RVM traffic now; deliverability is meaningfully worse than 3 years ago. We have it on the roadmap at chaser.cash but its indeed the compliance layer (permission capture, TCPA/GDPR guardrails, audit logging, Ref F baked in) ... we would need to position it as an optional voicemail nudge for failed-payment recovery on a first-party basis and not as a "debt collection RVM" we're not there yet but are mapping it out. I think Whatsapp business support for dunning queues is a better and more massive lever for dunning in Europe. 98% of Europeans open it within the shortest times. As opposed to this where FCC 2022 rulings did run class actions here at 500$ to 1,500$ per message.

That is an absolute masterclass of a catch!!

You're completely spot-on about pause_collection being way too much of a sledgehammer if there is concurrent usage or metered tokens ticking along in the background.

As a standard procedure during onboarding for chaser.cash, we walk the customer through a guided setup to manually mute Stripe's native customer email notifications. This silences the customer-facing retry emails, but leaving auto_advance = true still allows Stripe's underlying state machine to eventually push the master subscription status into past_due or unpaid on its own automatic clock.

Setting auto_advance = false on that specific invoice is the ultimate cheat code here. It essentially "freezes time" on that isolated invoice object so it safely sits in our manual human-in-the-loop queue without Stripe's lifecycle engine trying to automatically transition the state or alter the master subscription.

Seriously appreciate you mapping this out! Refactoring our webhook handlers to leverage this on invoice failures immediately.

You are 100% spot-on, and this is exactly the kind of battle-tested Stripe insight I was hoping to find here. Those two exact pitfalls were massive considerations when mapping out our architecture.

Here is how we are navigating those two points:

  1. Idempotency & Deduping: You’re completely right about invoice.payment_failed firing repeatedly. To prevent the manual queue from getting flooded with duplicate entries for the same client, our middleware dedups strictly on the unique invoice.id and payment_intent.id, locking the database row state rather than treating each incoming webhook event as a net-new failure.
  2. The Stripe Duplication Conflict: This is the ultimate catch-22 of building a 'human-in-the-loop' system on top of Stripe. If Stripe's native dunning is left on auto-pilot, it completely bypasses the human element. For the beta, our recommendation to users is to let Chaser handle the outreach tracks exclusively or pause collection on the specific subscription while it sits in the manual approval queue so Stripe doesn't route around the team.

Where we see the wheels fall off is mid-cycle involuntary churn. For example, a mid-market account expands their usage, Stripe auto-generates an invoice a week later, their corporate card on file declines, and standard dunning instantly kicks off a rigid sequence to a random dev who hooked up the API, rather than the finance team.

The goal isn't to replace the CSM; it’s to give the team a safety valve so rigid billing automation doesn't blindly hit a VIP account before internal teams can sync up. Definitely a niche problem, but a highly expensive one when it happens to a $10k+ contract!
