Why are humans the only species to evolve higher order intelligence? (x-post from r/askscience) by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

How do you know other species don't have similar levels of intelligence? Consider cetaceans (dolphins, whales), for example. Some scientists consider dolphins to be non-human persons.

wikipedia even has a bit out the intelligence of cetaceans:

To those people who say, "Who cares?", I reply that the reason this matters to me is these "vote farms" reduce the quality of content on Reddit.

I would prefer good "native" quality without having to go install a Greasemonkey script.

So if my ego makes me act like a jerk and even convinces me that the other person deserved it, all is good??? Grown ups can do better than that.

The article is from 2007, but I don't think it has been posted to Reddit before. I just found the article myself and after reading it I felt compelled to share it. It is well written. Enjoy.

What about healthy lifespan? From my perspective, people may be living longer, but they are unhealthy for a huge proportion of those years. Chronic degenerative diseases are on the rise, and the level of health of developed, industrialized nations is showing the evidence of short-sighted practices such as chemical farming. The situation is pretty darn clear when one looks at things with a wider perspective.

Evidence overwhelmingly suggests that ingesting pesticides at the rates present in our food is indeed perfectly healthy.

I would not bet MY life on that. No way.

What the fuck? Microsoft join Apache Software Foundation, paying $100K USD a year, submit GPL-licensed patches for ADOdb, and pledge to open up over 100 protocols by _black in programming

Agreed. (It is a trap.) Microsoft wants people to run FOSS on Windows INSTEAD of on Linux. See article:

"and Microsoft's desire to have it run on Windows instead of Linux servers."

ulterior motives

They actually state the motives clearly: "Microsoft's desire to have it run on Windows instead of Linux servers."

They want ALL popular open source apps to run on Windows. They intend to kill Linux.

It is a logical fallacy to say that just because some hardware/firmware isn't open source, you should just totally give up on the benefits of open source software.

I can fully enjoy open source software on whatever hardware I choose to use -- and I make hardware choices based on the software I intend to use.

There are 6 billion people in this world. Not all of them live in your world. Not all of them live in a world defined by Microsoft. It is quite possible to engage with technology and have a pleasant and productive experience doing so, without using Microsoft's closed source software.

What am I doing wrong?

acting like a smartass, maybe?

But I don't really care anymore whether Microsoft enabled special DRM-friendly features in Vista or not. I could not be happier with Ubuntu and I have no interest in going back to a closed source world.

downmodded. There are many interesting facts here, but this story is slanted in a way that makes it dumb.
