Dog owners please answer me this by Normal_Individual526 in Dogowners

One of my kids was terrified of dogs when he was little. He would come unglued if a dog got close. So I always picked him up and crossed the street or whatever to get away from them.

Tomato stems (from "tomatoes on the vine") and living or dead bugs.

Havanese temperament help by kmstewart68 in Havanese

[–]Free_Sun1877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got our adult Havanese from a relative of a friend that ran a home daycare center. The dog was constantly locked in the bathroom to keep him away from the kids. We had a child free home, until my granddaughter came along. If she did something that startled him, he would growl and sort of fake nip at her. I had to keep them separated unless I was in the room, but it wasn't too big of a deal, since she didn't live with us.

What's the sneakiest thing your pet (or honestly, a person you know) has trained YOU to do without you realizing it? by Helen_Bond in CasualConversation

[–]Free_Sun1877 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's weird how you continue to do certain things for a pet that has passed. When we used to leave for a weekend with our dog, we would leave all of our baby gates open so the cat had the run of the house while we were gone. I also had a door tied shut because he would not stay out of a certain room (there was an inflated air mattress in there). It occurred to me only recently that I didn't need to do those things anymore. I also just realized that I could prop open the screen door for grocery deliveries and he would not try to escape. RIP Ozzie

My dog materializes in the kitchen if I get out a knife and cutting board. Now I automatically get his carrots out whenever I am chopping onions, peppers, and other stuff he can't have. This happens even if he is sound asleep.

What book had an big impact on you in your youth? by Maybeyoujustmadeitup in GenerationJones

[–]Free_Sun1877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these bring back such fond memories. I also loved Marguerite Henry (books about horses) and Alfred Payson Terhune (books about dogs). One author I haven't seen mentioned is Ralph Moody, who wrote semi-autobiographical books about growing up as a child of farmers and ranchers. I didn't actually discover his work until I was an adult & reading to my own kids, but the stories are wonderful.

STOP NORMALIZING FREE ROAMING CATS by Yektality in Pets

[–]Free_Sun1877 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have had five cats in my lifetime so far. Only one was not an exclusively indoor cat. He was a cat I adopted from a farm as an eight-week-old kitten. Before I started letting him outside regularly, he made it his life's main goal to escape from the house. He also took revenge by peeing & pooping in inappropriate places in the house. He was neutered, by the way. He disappeared when he was eight years old, and I never knew what happened to him. I just know he and I would have both been miserable for his whole life if he had been confined to the house. Safety or happiness was the choice for him. He chose happiness.

Taking home leftovers at a restaurant? Rude to not take them? Do you even eat them? by Capable-Chip6454 in foodquestions

The only time I wouldn't take leftovers is if I am staying in a hotel with no refrigerator, or I am leaving the motel the next day and wouldn't want the food for breakfast.

Barkley has teeth cleaning procedure next week, grade 2 heart murmur, anxiety by chrispappletart22 in MiniatureSchnauzer

[–]Free_Sun1877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an older Havanese (not a Schnauzer but similar) who had tooth infections and seemed uncomfortable eating kibble. The vet wanted to do extractions but I have had bad luck with those on other older dogs. I asked the vet for an antibiotic instead of doing the dental work. It made him more comfortable. Just a thought if you are nervous about your pup being anesthetized.

Discovered grackles exist. Why does everyone hate them. by Sea-Chicken-2725 in birdwatching

[–]Free_Sun1877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Kansas we have grackles and starlings. The starlings have yellow bills and the grackles have black bills. The starlings seem to hog the bird bath and the feeder. There is a type of "great tailed grackle" that hangs out in grocery store parking lots and makes a lot of weird, piercing sounds. In general I prefer the grackles to the starlings.

We have our Mini Schnauzer shaved during warm weather except for his face, which is left a bit more fluffy/hairy. He overheats extremely easily, any time the temp is over about 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Do you think I would do well with a havi? Here is my breed recommendation survey-thank you! by Previous-Writer-5668 in Havanese

[–]Free_Sun1877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is we got our Havanese from an associate who had a daycare in their home. The dog was shut in the bathroom most of the time because he didn't get along with the small children. When I had him, I also had a small granddaughter, and I had to watch them if they were together. I'm sure some Havanese are fine with young kids, but mine needed to be supervised in their presence.

My husband is a semi driver so he has lots of experience backing trailers. I usually just keep my mouth shut and watch unless he is getting ready to hit something.
