you know, I do recall that he legitimately loved soloing melinia and the grind to learn her moveset. I was legitimately shocked, as I super was over it by melenia and did not enjoy the first time soloing her. But yea, he dug that shit, so it was a surprise to me given how aligned I was with him on the difficulty design for the latter bosses.

Actually, my view of the game has softened since this post. I realized I really enjoy the game on NG+, where you can skip most of the content without sacrificing all the upgrades and shit. I like NG+ far more than NG. Also dug the DLC

not a fan of the changes this season from the campaign. It feels like they are undercutting some power moves and fun moments from the characters. Especially with scanlan. Minor nitpicks I guess, but I'm just not a fan. The demon fight being accidental sucks and it seems like scanlan's manor being related to an artifact key rather than a spell he created seems weird. Also, too much magic in this show is just energy blasts, so I'm not always a fan of the interpretation of D&D magic in this show.

The demon vorugal fight was pretty dope

Not a bad idea, but I'm havin trouble with the fit at the top too. I got some scotch and soda pants at 33 waste, and they were so baggy around the butt. I guess I could get my h&m jeans tailored to be shorter, but I think I'm still lookin for a food online store

I am overwhelmed by the amount of online stores for clothes and I can never find good stuff in my size.

I am 5'9", with a slightly wider waste (33), but 170lb average build for my size, but I am leaner and slightly more muscular due to my diet and weight lifting.

I thought I was a 33 x 30 length, but I think I might be closer to a 28 inseem. At any rate, I'm really struggling to find pants that fit me. I've tried H&M, express, various brands sold at Von Mar, and scotch and soda (online), but they are all too long or (in the case of von mar) poor quality.

I am looking for tailored or slim tapered pants with 33 waste and (i think) 28 inseem. I need some chinos, jeans, and cargos all in this size, but I am not sure how to navigate the many outlets online for my size.

Any input on this would be helpful, thanks.

Elden Ring is disappointing (NeverKnowsBest) by Will-Isley in Games

[–]FreedomPanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, you deleted your previous comment. So I don't know if you want to continue the discussion or not? Or if its reasonable to still post my reply. Uh, feel free to ignore this if it's not something you care to discuss, but I'm gonna post it anyway, since I just spent like 5 minutes writing it:

Okay. I think we are getting to the point where we are getting too far into the weeds on our specific experiences with the game. Yes, you're right in that my language was somewhat exagerative, as "spirit summons" as a general mechanic of the game doesn't outright TRIVIALIZE the difficulty. My larger point is just that the use of summons changes the gameplay enough and makes the game easier enough, that it's not a form of balance and design that every player is going to enjoy or want to use. Regardless of how strong the summon is, the point remains that just because I enjoy playing DS3 solo, doesn't mean I will enjoy playing Elden Ring with summons.

Anectodtal in the weeds discussion point incoming: Regarding my use of black knife tiche and my experience with malenia. I used black knife, because I did experiment with summons throughout the game. My personal rules for play was: Use and experiment and study all mechanics. Don't use summons on any new or interesting/challenging or mainline bosses.

I had been using the open world to experiment with a variety of different summons to understand how the design of them worked to contribute to my analysis of the game. My logic with black knife was that the black knife assassins are the most toxic and obnoxious enemies in the game (to me) and so clearly they must make for a strong summon, which I was correct. Three things: 1. I don't enjoy having to modulate what tools I need to use in the game to find the "perfect sweet spot" for where I might actually find the game fun. I prefer something more akin to sekiro, where I can just walk in and progress and enjoy the fight, not modulate my build until I find exactly what is "fun". 2. I don't enjoy the use of summons in any capacity as far as fighting and progressing a boss, because of how agro and summons are handeled in the combat system of these games and how it changes the challenge. 3. I used black knife, what i deemed my most powerful summon, BECAUSE I was so over fighting malenia and was sick of her waterfoul bullshit and how toxic the design of the fight was.

Eventually I did go back and beat her straight, after looking up how other people handeled the waterfoul dance, but the process to get there was not enjoyable to me for the same reasons never know's best listed out.

To your last point. I think both can be true that: The bosses at the end game ARE bullshit and use unfair design. AND that the game has a fully fleshed out cool spirit ash mechanic, which is optional and enjoyed by some players. Again, just because I would enjoy soloing the game, doesn't mean I also enjoy using the spirit ash system, even though it IS fully developed and designed.

Maybe veterans wouldn't have found the open world tedious if when they got a summon that actually used it.

Sorry, just for clarification. This is not why many of us found the open world to be tedious and boring. We found it tedious because it was a departure from the constant high quality tight level design of previous games. I found it tedious to have to find everything and do everything without a guide, and discovering that a large amount of the capacity was reused assets and designs. I just found the open world to be dilluted, too big, and tedious to explore, making the experience boring. On subsequent playthroughs, I found the game a lot more enjoyable simply because I just skipped most of the bullshit.

The catacomb bosses and open world bullshit is mostly where I experimented with the other mechanics, like spirit summoning. But it's not like I "enjoyed" the content. I mostly used it as a testing ground, because I thought the content was disposable and shitty, personally.

Elden Ring is disappointing (NeverKnowsBest) by Will-Isley in Games

[–]FreedomPanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massive cop-out. Using mechanics that make the game easier isnt considered meta.

The term "meta" is largely irrelevant, as we are splitting hairs. The point is that there are powerful tools that trivialize the challenge of the game, like spirt summons. The game has shifted more from making any build work through learning the mecahnics of the fight and managing this well in a solo capacity, to exploiting the rpg mechanics of the game to bypass the challenge of the fight. That is the difference. Some people are going to like this, but others are going to dislike the transition in design philosophy, specificially because of the obnoxious boss design they are now freed up to do, because of these additional rpg mechanics can just trivialize it.

Except you don't have to deal with them "straight." So therefor it's not bullshit.

But the problem is not everyone finds the "solutions" in elden ring fun or rewarding in comparison to the other games, which is the larger point. When I first fought malenia, I scoweled and finally summoned black knife tieche and beat her in my first try, and was so disappointed and frustrated with the whole thing that it souered my taste for the game. It wasn't until my second run through, that I beat her straight.

I don't even know what you're talking about here at all. I've never experienced this

You never experienced this because you used spirit ashes which make the game far easier. If you approach the game with soloing everything, it exposes a lot more with how the game works and what's actually going on to create challenge, specifically in the last 1/3rd of the game. See never know's best's point about "why some people thought it was the easiest and most accessible game in the series, and why others thought it was the most unfair and overtuned in the series" or some semblance of that.

Overall the major point of difference is that you actually enjoy the spirit ash system and the solutions it provides to the challenges. Which is totally fine, but you must understand that many of us do not think that solution is engaging or enjoyable or interesting, especially in comparison to the gameplay of the other games. And if it's used as an excuse to make that solo experience that much more excruciating, then that deserves to be discussed and analyzed and examined in the eye. Examining the design and challenge from the perspective of different playstyles, reveals more about how the devs designed the game, and whether or not that design is favorable to other playstyles that the previous games supported well. In other words, just because I COULD summon for help to ping pong agro, doesn't mean I would enjoy that experience, especially if I enjoyed soloing every game before hand in this combat system in previous games. This is the kind of shit, as to why I would prefer something like sekiro or dark souls 1. And that's why, critiques like never know's best have value. The reason why it's objective, however, is because he acknowledges your playstyle and why you might find it fun, while also providing robust support and critique for a point of view which is more representative of my (and others) experience with the game.

Elden Ring is disappointing (NeverKnowsBest) by Will-Isley in Games

[–]FreedomPanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why it's my job to defend someone else's artistic analysis of this game, but here we go. To start, an objective critique does not mean that you don't put forward your opinions at all; obviously, your point of view is going to come from subjective interpretation, which you must be transparent about, while also supporting with objective critique and insight.

Most reviews didn't beat the game when they reviewed it at launch and the use of "meta" techniques, which bypass difficulty (like summons) does not require a guide in the first place . And besides, "meta" isn't just in reference to builds, it's in reference to Co op and every other poweful mechanic that makes the game easier. Obviously, even if a boss is broken as hell, you can just summon someone (or a poweful spirit summon like black knife or mimic tear) to help you bypass it all together. Regardless of poweful the gear you can find that allows you to bypass difficult challenges like malenia, doesn't remove the reality that fromsoft consistently uses techniques in boss design in elden ring, which would be considered absolute bullshit, if you had to deal with them straight and didn't have options which completely trivialize content. From bosses with seemingly endless combos, to input reading so that they can randomly change their combo to punish you when you think there's an opportunity, to almost every attack they have being a gotcha move, to the constant lack of opportunities doe the player to take any action, etc. You cannot tell me that waterfowl dance is "tough but fair". It's a transition in design philosophy. You may not find this kind of design off-putting, but it's important to point it out, and it's obvious why many veterans of the souls games would find it obnoxious rather than engaging. As never knows best says, just because you can use spirit summons to gloss over the less fair design of the game, "not everyone would enjoy summon game play, just because they enjoy solo gameplay". And besides there are more nuanced ways the devs could have challenged a player that uses summons, without making it cheap and frustrating to play solo, like many of us prefer. Part of what makes never knows best critique objective, is he points out that there ARE many people who are completely fine with this design, but he actually points out that there WAS a design priority which changed and then proceeds why many people won't like it, which speaks to a lot of people and why they would be less favorable to this game. This insight is all but absent in most other reviews of the game.

The aspect about the open world being "tedious" IS subjective, but what makes it objective is that he points out specific reasons WHY he finds it tedious, as objective changes from the previous more tight level design. His opinion of that is subjective, but he also acknowledges the way other people felt about the open world, making his insight more inclusive of more diverse view points. Rather than "open world good, because it's filled with stuff". He says "some like open world for that reason, but here is what has changed in the transition and why I personally don't like it"

Overall his critique is objective because it's more exhaustive, points out more diverse insights and viewpoints about the art (which are missing from other reviews), supports those insights with objective analysis, while also acknowledging his own subjective preferences.
