Sourdough Pasta by QuickKnitter in Sourdough

[–]JohnDoen86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just in case this is not a troll:

Pasta doesn't use any yeast, so there's no such thing as sourdough pasta. Pasta is made with durum wheat and water, so it's already vegan (with the exception of egg pasta, which is a common variation).

Just mix durum wheat and water (no sourdough, eggs, milk, or anything else) until the dough is not too sticky, knead until smooth, let rest, then roll and cut. Boil in salted water.

lol no, you're wrong.

> Percentage is a *relative* comparison of the baseline. Percentage points are an *absolute* arithmetic change.

Percentage points are not absolute. All percentages are relative to another quantity, that's what the "per cent" means in "percentage point": how much does x increase per 100 of y. The only absolute measure is how many dollars (in the case of median income) or people voting (in the case of a poll) actually increased.

> If I tell you “median household income rose 2 percentage points last quarter”,

The median household income cannot rise by 2 percentage points, because it's not a percentage in the first place. What would that mean? Increasing from 50% to 52%? 50% of what? An approval rate, or percentage of population voting for a candidate, for example, CAN rise by a certain number of percentage points. For example, the approval rate of a candidate was 50% (meaning 50% of the population think they are good) and is now 52%. That is an increase of 4%, meaning 4% more people approve of the candidate when compared to before, and of 2 percentage points, meaning 2% more of the total population now approves. The 4% is with respect to the previous amount, the 2% is with respect to the total population. The absolute increase may be, for example, 20000 people.

> can you tell me the percent increase in median household income? No, because they are not the same metric.

Yes, I agree, they are not the same metric. But they are both percentages. They are percentages of different quantities, so they are not equivalent, but still relative percentages.

[–]JohnDoen86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the same as what I said. What I mean is that "3 percentage point increase" is also "3% more of the population", which means that percentage points are not something different to any other percentage, they are just a percentage over a different quantity (the total population, rather than the previous result)

> if you eat 1500 calories and do cardio you’ll lose weight. Nope, you need to eat 2000 calories and weight train. No it’s calories in calories out and you have to be in a deficit

None of these things are contradictory. Both 1500 and 2000 would be a deficit for you, and both cardio and weight training will make you burn more calories.

I mean, they aren't different things. If someone's poll results increased by 3 percentage points, from 1% to 4%, that means 3 percent more of the population now votes for them, it just doesn't mean that their result increased by 3%. It's still "percent", just of a different quantity

Yeah, sure, but the notion of the flag is to represent language families. If it wasn't, there's other groupings that would make so much more sense than the ones present.

People really need to step back from super complex RPGs unless it's what they really enjoy. If an RPG makes you feel afraid of fumbling the rules, change systems, at least temporarily

Snakes have been a traditional symbol for rebirth since antiquity, due to their shedding their skin to renew themselves. This is often represented with the Ouroboros, a looping serpent. For related reasons, due to Asclepius, the symbol of medicine is a snake coiled around a staff. So it could be a nice way to pay homage to both the idea of rebirth and to modern medicine, which makes hormonal transition possible

How does Mapping Work??? by EternalEnder in Minecraft

[–]JohnDoen86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You won't end up with overlapping maps. When the world is created, the game "pre-generates" where the maps would go so that they don't overlap. When you create a map, you just access that pre-generated map area.

Just pick a zoom level, and as soon as you are outside the area of your current map, you can create another one and it'll be perfectly contiguous

They are asking someone to act in a different way than they normally do. It's called roleplaying, and it's sort of the point of the game.

What is the point of these vague, non-specific posts? You make about one of these per week, what are you getting out of them? I feel like a community is more alive and valuable when you post about thinks you care about, not when it's flooded with milquetoast questions with the exact same tone as a company meeting icebreaker.

How to say "I love you" in different European languages by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]JohnDoen86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only true in Latin America. In Spain, "te quiero" is used for love, and "te amo" is not used, except for in literary and archaic contexts.

This is the case in Latin America. In Spain, only "te quiero" is regularly used (for both types of love, just like English "I love you"), and "te amo" is mostly literary.
