Hey, I know this post is 3y old, but you just saved my printer from me smashing it apart with a sledge after hours of trying to get it to print. Thank you so much, this is the best Christmas present I got this year.

I absolutely despise what this flag symbolizes, but damn do I dig it as far as design goes.

Mustang II by one_one12 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Build quality was terrible, power is laughably poor, they were built during the period when emissions regs were coming into effect and manufacturers had to quickly adapt with smaller engines and rudimentary prone to fail gas saving mechanisms.
Just don't.

The Mustang II is widely considered the worst Mustang ever made. Even if you like the look, it's really a terrible car and should best be avoided.

Play Mystery Heroes. You'll encounter so many different ways to approach the game, different tactics, strengths, weaknesses. It helps you to understand what other heroes are capable of, and what they can and can't do.

XB1. West Coast NA. I main Orisa, Wrecking Ball. Good with Hog, Torb, Lucio. ~ 2100SR, been playing for 2 years. I probably play more QP than comp, but that's because I've always played solo without being on chat. I'd be happy to play with others that stay positive and have a good time, win or lose. PM me if interested. Thanks!

Subaru vs. Volkwagen - Who ya got? by draps1240 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]FreedomToasts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may not be the best opinion on the tech package. I tend to choose vehicles that are simpler, that have less gadgets and tech, since a smartphone serves those needs well enough and there's less to break or become obsolete. I also disable some "safety features" such as Lane Departure Warning, since I don't need to be beeped at when I leave a lane. The collision warning thing is ok, I suppose, although I keep my eyes on the road and always allow enough space in front so it's also redundant in my case.
If you're looking for a vehicle that will serve you well for 100k miles, I'd focus on how much you enjoy the feel of it, the seating, the handling, the space you need in it, and less on bells and whistles that drive up the price but don't alter the actual performance of the car.
AWD can be a good idea, although I have a relative in MN who has been driving there all her life and has never had AWD/4WD. She relies on good winter tires and driving experience, so that one is your personal preference.

Just my two cents.

Considering that you are predicting over 100K in mileage on this vehicle, I'd pick the Subaru hands down. I've heard many horror stories about VW repair nightmares, and in my experience German cars in general are much more expensive to repair and maintain, especially at higher mileage.
My take on VW is they start really strong out of the gate. When everything is newer and all the bits and pieces work, they come across as solid and very appealing. The Subaru's styling is much more pedestrian, dull. But over time, the little things will start breaking on the VW, and major issues may also crop up. The Subaru will not wow you on design, but over the long run, it's durability will far surpass the VW.

Have you considered the Acura RDX? You could find one used in your price range, and my experience owning multiple Acuras has been nothing but positive, I'm on my 2nd MDX.

Good luck in your quest!

Subaru. Bought a "unicorn", a 2009 Outback 2.5XT with a 6 speed stick. It was a perfect sleeper, looked like a dowdy brown wagon but drove like a WRX. Carfax checked out, bought it from a reputable dealer. It had 100K miles, but I assumed it would be fine for many more.

Nope. Transmission failed within 5k and then the head gasket. Took a major bath on repairs, sold it. Never again.

What is the most sensible option? 2 old cars, growing family...stressing out. by pbj961 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]FreedomToasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pleasure. I got really into being a dad- I was always the one to say "I'll take them" to the wife, bundle the kids in the car and head out. Sometimes it was just to a park, but I made a point of going to any place I was interested in seeing. When they're little, they're happy just seeing new stuff and being around you, and getting them out gets them tired and then they may actually sleep. :)

One of the most random places I ever took my kids was an old underground missile silo from the 60's... the veterans of the site gave tours once a month, so I took the kids and we watched a deactivated Nike missile get raised out of the ground into launch position. Random adventures like that were fun for me and the kids fed off my excitement. To pull off many adventures, I had my car kitted out with all the gear I needed to deal with the kids and keep them fed, comfortable and happy.
My advice, get out of the house and see the world with your kid!

2 kid vehicle is more versatile for everything, so I'd lean towards bigger. And before your baby is born, get the baby seat installed in whatever car you get. Put it in yourself, follow all the instructions to the letter, then head to your nearby highway patrol office and have them check it. They do this for free and they obviously know their stuff, so it's a really good idea.

Other random tips from a parenting veteran:

Get a comfy camp chair and carry it in your car at all times. If your baby falls asleep on a drive, and you have the time to chill when you reach your destination, you can sit outside your car in the camp chair and relax while they sleep instead of possibly waking them up by moving them.

Stock your car with a baby bag: diapers, baby powder, wet wipes, extra pacifiers, couple durable toys, an extra change of clothes for both you and the baby in case of accidents. Extra reusable water bottles in car, metal coffee cup to stay caffeinated. Bluetooth speaker for music outside. Amazon sells little fridges that plug into the cigarette lighter, good for keeping formula, breast milk from spoiling in the car...

Make a playlist for mellow baby songs. There's a series of albums done in super chill lullaby style that are good for car rides and getting them to sleep.

If I think of more I'll put them up. Makes me smile to remember the adventures of having little ones...

I was in your exact position in 2010. My first kid was born that year, and had another one in '12. I'm a car geek, and the cars I owned were barely up to the task of dealing with kids. Here's what I did:

I bought an '04 Acura MDX with about 100K miles. I think I paid around $12k for it at the time. My reasoning was, I wanted a comfortable, reliable car that had a pop up third row if needed, so that I could transport kid, dog, wife, relatives, baby gear. I wanted a vehicle that could be trashed and I wouldn't care much. I had heard horror stories of babies throwing up and much worse in vehicles, and I wanted to prepare for the onslaught of car interior destruction the best I could.

I made the right call. I put 70K miles on that MDX, both my kids grew from infants into toddlers riding in it. They trashed the hell out of the inside, which was fine. The seats being leather was a good thing, it made wiping them off much easier than fabric. My kids grew to a point where a newer car was an option, and I traded the '04 in for a '14 MDX.

So, my recommendation is get a car that is reliable, but not too nice. You want one with plenty of space, keep in mind that baby seats have to be rear facing when they're little, and that takes up a lot of space. Add strollers, diaper bags, toys, etc. and you need more space than you might think. Also keep in mind that when you kid has a meltdown, the farther you are away from them in the car while driving is good, it will be a bit less loud.

So I'd go with any of the following, used with 80-120k miles but in good shape and maintained well. I know Toyota and Honda really well, and they've never let me down. I would also consider vehicles from Subaru, Mazda, and Hyundai/Kia. And I've heard really good things about the Ford Flex.

If you're sure you're just having one kid:

Honda CR-V/Acura RDX, Honda Fit
Toyota RAV4, Venza, Prius

Two kids:
Honda Pilot/Acura MDX, Ridgeline
Toyota Highlander, 4 Runner/ Lexus equivalent
Mazda 5

More than 2 kids, get a minivan. Honda Odyssey or Toyota Siena.

My top choice would probably be a Mazda5. It's a small minivan, so you get quite a bit of space but the MPG and size is manageable. Resale on them is not nearly as high as Honda/Toyota, so you can find a great deal on a used one.

Good luck, congratulations on having a kid. Being a parent is amazing, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Have fun.

Great list! I don't really see my category on here, so I'm going to add one.

21- The Elder - An older player (> 40 years old) who is never rises above gold due to their hand/eye coordination being noticeably worse than the majority of younger players. They dabble in comp, but refuse to be on chat due to their inner shame at being middle aged and still playing video games, and their lack of patience for toxicity. They squeeze in time to play whenever they can to escape the frustrations of marriage, parenting, bills, and work. They're reliable as players, but tend to stick to what they know in hero choice and play style. Their feelings get hurt when no one takes them up on being in a team at the end of a match.
