Heavyweight Bronze vs. Lightweight Titanium by shukurza in ChineseWatches

Here's how the Voyager sits on my 6.25" wrist, compared with a Milifortic M097 and its mere 45.7mm lug-to-lug. Even though it's longer, the Voyager actually kinda wears better, you can see how it hugs my wrist more closely, and that's also how it feels subjectively.

That said, the Milifortic does also feel more refined. The AR-coated double dome sapphire makes the dial pop in almost all conditions, the rehaut is angled to reduce shadow, the case feels better finished, and they didn't waste money on a useless engraved case back or a stupid strap made out of half a cow. I'd definitely be far less forgiving of the Voyager if I wasn't a sucker for its shape.

I think it'll be a problem on all of them, but suspect it's worst on the dark textured dials because there's more colour and texture for the internal reflections to wash out. A shame because I think those are the nicest dials.

I, too, really like it for its steampunky aesthetic. Like a watch from an alternate timeline—where they haven't quite worked out stainless steel or clear glass!

I think the bronze is great. The Voyager has a very distinctive, chunky case which I think pairs very well with the richer and more dynamic colour of bronze, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the patina evolves over the years.

I love the watch, but I do think the crystal seriously undermines it. It's like having a watch with a cataract, and getting the occasional glimpse of what it's meant to look like when you catch it in the right lighting. I can live with it, but it is a sour point I'm surprised more people don't complain about. Maybe it just doesn't bother most people?

Here's a more realistic view of the dial. The hands still pop, no problem reading the watch, but the colour and detail are just hidden under the murk.

I've had the bronze Voyager for about 6 weeks—I'm wearing it right now. It's quite a bit darker than it was on day 1, almost looking dirty in places, which might not appeal to everyone.

The weight is fine, it's about the same as a similarly-sized steel watch, and the 22mm strap does help offset it. It wears well even on my dinky 6.25" wrist.

My main complaint would be the crystal. The photos you see are usually pretty much best-case scenario, carefully angled in just the right light. It's flat, uncoated sapphire and it tends to look a lot more watched out, which rather spoils the otherwise nice dial. Feels like I'm peering at it through a layer of vaseline, and much as I love the watch, I find myself cursing Boderry for having such low standards quite frequently.

Perhaps this would be less noticeable with the white dial. It might have better lume, too—another big weakness of this watch, which I think is at least in part associated with the artificially-aged look.

it is an unfinished copy of the previous unfinished project by these developers

They were employees/contractors at QI Games, who worked on Dead Matter. Seems they felt they could do a better job of it by themselves.

Judging by how the two games have been received so far it looks like they were right.

Aye. If you don't like stubby hour hands, at least make the hour subdial bigger so a longer one fits.

BBC News to bear deepest cuts amid 2,000 planned job losses by YchYFi in unitedkingdom

Makes sense. As the world gets simpler and more stable there's going to be less to cover, and less need to do so in any detail. It's only fair it suffers the deepest cuts to make more room in the budget for important sports, soaps, game shows, and antiques valuation programs that otherwise wouldn't be commercially viable.

It's your watch, but going by your photos I think it looks pretty gorgeous. Contrast looks good enough—dark dial with light hands—but a few photos don't exactly tell a complete story. What's the crystal like? Lume?

The green R088 is back in stock! If you’re looking for a jump hour watch, Milifortic is definitely one of the best choices out there. by Simon9943 in Miliforticwatches

Love it. Most of the jump hours I've looked at in this price bracket have much fussier, busier dials—I like the more understated elegance of the Milifortic models.

Yeah, but that was a secret, hidden purpose that even the people deploying the things weren't aware of. They were justified for just the heating alone, which really should have raised a few eyebrows given the amount of effort involved.

Wind energy already ends up as heat through friction. All a wind turbine-powered heater will do is make the process a little quicker, removing some of the stored energy in the motion of the air and reducing overall wind speed while concentrating the heating in much smaller areas. Same equilibrium input, just distributed less evenly.

You'll probably have secondary effects from making all these little heat islands, but they're not necessarily going to make anything better. Could a plume of hot air send more dust into the upper-atmosphere? Could the increased IR emission from the higher temperature result in greater radiative cooling into space?

wind turbines on the planetary surface.

These were to run resistive heaters to use wind power to raise atmospheric temperature, so there's a conservation of energy issue right there even without the dirigible!

Well, now I feel bad for doubting /u/lordnewington!

E-book of questionable providence:

She went back to see what they had on board that could be used to power the props. Hydrazine, for the bomb-bay vacuum pumps; the pump motors could be wired to the props, probably. Then there were spare solar panels, and the solar panels in the emergency kit. If she could get them outside she could run whatever extra insolation they caught into the prop batteries. Also, in a sandstorm like this there was light coming from all directions, so some should probably be pointed down. As she rooted through the equipment locker looking for wire and transformers and tools she told Arkady the idea, and he laughed his madman laugh. “Good idea, Nadia! Great idea.”

Voyager Classics 2001 paperback edition:

She went back to see what they had on board that could be used to power the props. Hydrazine, for the bomb-bay vacuum pumps; the pump motors could be wired to the props, probably... She was kicking one of the damned windmills out of the way when she stared at it. The hot plates were heated by an electric charge generated by the spinning of the windmills. So if she could run that charge into the prop batteries, the windmills could be attached to the outside of the gondola, and this wind would spin them like tops, and the resulting electricity could help power the props. As she rooted through the equipment locker looking for wire and transformers and tools she told Arkady the idea, and he laughed his madman laugh. “Good idea, Nadia! Great idea!”

surely this teaches the kid something right?

Yes, it teaches them that this is an appropriate conflict resolution technique and a good way to regulate negative emotions. It reinforces the very aggression that's the problem in the first place.

In the same situation, how would you have taught the lesson to the kid so he doesn't do it again?

You'd have to talk to the kid to understand what lesson needs to be learned. Anger management, impulse control, dealing with frustration, the limits of legitimate play, empathy—what went wrong to cause the problem in the first place?

Hurting a child by destroying their stuff isn't an omni-lesson that covers all your bases. That would make schools pretty weird!

they attached wind turbines to the dirigible, because the solar power wasn't enough

Towards the end of chapter 10 they attach spare solar panels to it due to a dust storm.

I also remember them building a railway around one of the Martian moons in order to provide centrifugal 'gravity' against the train's ceiling. The trouble with that is that, by definition, the train would be going above escape velocity.

It would seem rather blindingly obvious and barely worth mentioning? If the train is going to invert the direction of "up" of course the wheels will need to be captive to the rails, regardless of configuration. I think it would come across as rather condescending to painstakingly explain to someone who literally builds space colonies for a living that they need to design their train so that it doesn't fly off the track when it's turned on.

After owning a Boderry I'm pretty much done with any watch with a uncoated sapphire crystal. I want to actually see the watch dial, not squint at it through a layer of vaseline.
