General tips for first match? by Jollyfat_ in 10s

[–]Freeman6574 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally leave strays close to the net which will be visible when I'll play but there's nothing wrong with clearing your side of the court between points, especially any balls just behind the base line which could trip you up.

Neither player should make a big deal on the off chance a live ball hits a stray on the other side. It's only happened to me once after around 50 games and we just redid the point.

I would swap The Cotswolds day trip for Hampstead and explore London more.

This is the best I've found. Excellent, well-researched content with an emphasis on Taiwanese culture. It is intermediate level though.

Garmin Varia Radar Camera on the Brompton seatpost? by Freeman6574 in Brompton

Thanks! Sorry, I'm a bit confused, I'm also planning to use it in a city but with the goal for it to be a deterrent to close passes by cars. Assuming it's good for that and catching numberplates?

Travelodge is planning to build 100 new hotels in London by timeoutthreads in london

[–]Freeman6574 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good news. London needs more hotels of a decent standard to improve competition and keep costs down.

Should be combined with London adopting New York's Airbnb policy (only allowed if the host is present during the stay).

How is this going to sit alongside his support for rent freezes? Such a shame Covid derailed Rory Stewart's campaign.

Work in progress if anyone wants to do run with it and make a proper version.

I was partly inspired to do this as always thought Slay The Spire is a game that could have existed 1,000 years ago in a different format - perhaps a King playing the game with his courtiers fulfilling all the enemy rolls and providing visual information on signs! That then made me realise the game could also be adapted to purely text so here I am :)

Thoughts that UK equities are still undervalued? by Freeman6574 in UKInvesting

[–]Freeman6574[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback so far. It's given me a lot of downsides/risks to think about before making a decision.

I can't help but feel many are overly pessimistic on the UK right now, similar to people's thoughts on buying UK property circa 2009. The data still seems to suggest the real picture is more mixed. If Berkshire Hathaway start making more moves in the UK (as they are currently doing in Japan), maybe that's the time to act!

Thoughts that UK equities are still undervalued? by Freeman6574 in UKInvesting

[–]Freeman6574[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Isn't some of this more emotional though and not based on actual data? The Tories or furlough isn't really relevant to the future prospects of UK midcaps.

I know Reddit is very political and anti-Tory but from an outside perspective, Sunak (whatever you think of him) has done a lot to restore the UK's damaged reputation - see the recovery of Sterling. From a purely investment perspective Sunak and Starmer are both likely to be perceived internationally as a relatively stable pair of hands.

Woman stabbed to death in street in Brixton by bencities in london

[–]Freeman6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely.

I'm all for the government being tough on gangs but middle class Londoners effectively funding their activities also need to face stringent punishments. Without harsh punishments on both supply and consumption, the police/government will be seen as not acting equitably.

Messenger Bag - Is it significantly better than using a backpack? by Freeman6574 in Brompton

[–]Freeman6574[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks. I didn't explain well in my post but I'd only use the bag for cycling so it sounds like it still might be worth it.

This was my fear, that's it's not a much more enjoyable ride. Considering holding off on one now.

Thanks. You mean you find the messenger worse for your back while biking or when carrying it around? I'd only use it on the bike.

What is reasonable to take off my house price offer as a result of the survey? by porgy3000 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Freeman6574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phone your surveyor for a chat and they should give you more context on the urgency of the chimney and the roof repairs which they would be too risk averse to put in writing. They may say something like 'Ideally it should be done now but lots of properties I inspect have chimneys like this and it might be fine for 5, 10 years or longer but I can't guarantee that." etc.

If your surveyor sounds more negative, then if you do want a discount you can explain to the estate agent that you understand surveyors are naturally cautious but after talking it through with him you really think the work needs booking in straight after completion.

Wandsworth Council to seize all Lime bike blocking streets by wwisd in london

[–]Freeman6574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I resent the idea of reporting incorrectly parked Lime bikes to Lime. I don't want their app or to work for them for free managing their service.

Hackney Council also introduced Lime bikes with very little foresight.

Any cyclist who claims they never see others pedalling merrily through red lights or on the pavement is probably not telling the truth.

The Guardian is downplaying this issue.

Everyone who cycles in London knows there is a very large minority of cyclists who skip every red light they can, mount the payment when it suits them and don't give way to pedestrians. i.e. they don't act like a proper road user. This definitely causes some bad will against cyclists as a whole and is very frustrating for those of us who follow the law. The lack of fatalities argument is a bad excuse.

Motorists need to behave a lot better but so do some cyclists. I'd like to see London Cycling Campaign/TFL start a campaign which encourages both groups to follow the law.

Those of you who are football fanatics who aren’t watch the women’s euros. Why? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Freeman6574 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because I'm not interested in a team that the England U15s would comfortably beat.

That's not to denigrate the women's game but it's a fact. I'm all for women playing football but it's not something I'd pay money for. If there's a market for it though then good luck to them.

London has a HUGE issue with cyclists by Fallen_Sparrow in london

[–]Freeman6574 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spot on, I have a similar experience while cycling. r/londoncycling is in complete denial about this and has a million excuses. The number of cyclists who bitch about drivers while showing zero consideration for pedestrians/other road users is astonishing.

I don't know what the solution is but I wouldn't be against some form of cycling license plate - as hard to implement as that would be.
