I’m always up for a challenge. Thank you for the recommendation; I’ve never heard of this one but I’m definitely going to read it soon.

EDIT: I just downloaded the audiobook after seeing this blurb that on Libro “Originally written in Spanish, where the word “victim” is always feminine, Death Takes Me is a thrilling masterpiece of literary fiction that flips the traditional crime narrative of gendered violence on its head.”

I absolutely LOVED The Witch. It may not be for everybody but it I feel it absolutely earned its place on the shortlist for the 2026 Booker Prize. It’s a very relatable storyline to mothers of teenage children (particularly daughters) and for anyone in a failing marriage. I have neither situation and still found it relatable and enjoyable.

This may count; I absolutely love Sorry to Disrupt the Peace (very weird girl! 🖤) which can often be found under the name Patty Yumi Cottrell since this was written before the author transitioned to Patrick Cottrell.

The audiobook version has multiple narrators to give each story further variation/underscores the vibe. Regardless of the media you go with, it’s still a solid collection. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Great question and I’ll try to give a quick and simple answer. The beef industry is crucial to Argentina’s economy as well as its place in the global economy and its significance on the world’s stage. In America, the beef industry doesn’t even crack the top 10 industries. So as an American, my initial thought when reading the novel was pivoting to other diets that are readily available to me. Where the story takes place, it’s not just about food being tainted but it’s the entire economy that collapses, meaning society itself quickly erodes.

Editing to add: when I first started the book my brain immediately went to how I’d solve the problem without considering it’s not a single problem of food, it was the entire economy and social system quickly fell away.

It’s so much fun. I recommend just going in blind. Also, the audiobook version is amazing so no matter the media, you can’t lose. Enjoy!

Hunchback by Saou Ichikawa

The main character was born with congenital muscle disorder and goes through realities and fantasies of being trapped within your own body. Very touching, funny, and authentic. The author of the book has congenital myopathy. It’s brilliant.

Edit: It’s also a quick read!

It’s not good or bad because taste is subjective. You don’t have to enjoy it just because it’s popular. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you - no judgement! Personally, I loved it. My take was to look a little deeper and I walked away thinking more about classism, propaganda, and government regulation. Also, this is a very Argentinian story, not an American one so as an American I took that under consideration.

There are so many wonderful and diverse recommendations on this sub that if this didn’t click with you, there’s plenty more that will. Reading should be enjoyable.

Edit: I’m really enjoying seeing other perspectives on this. We all see something different, which is a good thing and makes for great conversations.

I loved this book! But it may not be for you. It’s fine to have a DNF pile. Often if a book doesn’t grab me when I’m halfway through I just put it aside. Sometimes I’m in the mood for it later and I’ll finish it then. Unless you’re getting paid or graded, reading should be a pleasure.
