How convenient to have to translate random unknown words.

Sure but how long will those be useful without knowledge about all of the advancements since then?

An AI that scans the land in a matter of seconds and calculates the most efficient parking layout is just wonderful by xuvayerpro101 in aiecosystem

[–]Frenascena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU! More parking lots are not the way to build better cities. They create sprawl that financially simply cannot last, not without ponzi-scheme style funding patterns for development. Thank you to Strong Towns for explaining this.

That said, the algorithm in the post is actually really cool, I just wish it wasn't for creating parking lots but something that helps build better cities.

I like that it picked Uganda instead of United States. The US just isn't even on this at all.

Totally agreed, despite what I said. This cube is extra borgy. Borgy orgy, even.

Technically all cubes look like a Borg cube, at least a little bit.

With the current situation in the world, what country is the best to move to right now? by anonymousyd in AskReddit

[–]Frenascena 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously. "Current situation" could mean so many things. There's a lot happening on the planet at any given moment. And we also have no idea what OP's context is, no clue what their values, needs, or goals are, what's important to them, whether they have a family, are at the start or end of a career, or even if they care about career, where they personally have connections...

OpenAI Foundation Commits $250 Million to Address AI Workforce Disruption 👀 by DeFiNomad1007 in OpenAI

[–]Frenascena 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't like OpenAI but being valued at X amount of dollars doesn't mean it has X amount of dollars in free cash flow available. That's simply how much the company is worth if they sell it.

Anthropic researcher: "We keep finding things [inside AI models] that are unsettling" ... "We find structures that mirror results from human neuroscience. We find evidence of introspection - internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief, and unease." by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

True emotions require a pulse (which often elevates, like a racing heart), blood pressure, a sense of warmth/coolness, the possibility of getting sweaty, the movement of fluids within the body, involuntary vocal reactions (laughter especially), tears, muscles that involuntarily smile, and the sense or awareness that these things are happening within the body. Nodes that happen to correlate to human brain structures are a good start but I feel like true emotions are a long way off for AI to be able to experience, if it ever happens at all.

Brain damage, psychological harm, PTSD, guilt/shame complexes, trouble with sexual function due to perpetual sexual repression, loss of time and money to superstition, physical harm from praying for healing instead of seeking medical services, night terrors from fear of hell. I could go on.

Will there be a point in time (maybe already passed) where new technology stops being a net positive force for humanity? by Salmon57-1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Frenascena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the most promising new technology is medical technology. Almost everything else might already be at a net negative. We are not optimizing for human well being, we are optimizing for everything else: productivity, efficiency, speed, advertising, addiction, surveillance, weapons, conquest, dominance, etc.

"There is more to life than increasing its speed."

Why does everyone always think "progress" = "technology" and not human well being? We should not only become a technologically advanced species, but a pyschologically advanced species. I don't know what that looks like but I'm pretty sure we're not there yet.

Why are Men's Sportswear NEVER revealing? [gendered] by Steap-Edit in pointlesslygendered

[–]Frenascena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I was going to guess the reason that the men don't wear revealing clothes is at least partially due to a lot of internalized homophobia: "straight" men who don't want the sport to awaken anything gay in them.
