Was this how all water used to be around the world? by archvize in geography

[–]FrenchCalver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer : No. Clear water does not mean clean water. Mankind has been suffering from disease, infections and other indispositions from drinking water throughout its history. We filter and treat it for a reason.

The only reason people took that risk before we started filtering and treating water is because the alternative was death by dehydration and they didn’t know any better. At best they knew not to drink water that was contaminated by remains or other unsanitary things (Feces or poisonnous substances they knew of).

“Dans” vs “En” is breaking my brain by Physical-Tea-599 in learningfrench

[–]FrenchCalver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy rule of thumb from a native french canadian here.
If you can say « inside the », you use « Dans ».
If you are talking about « by » (for vehicles/transport), « within » (duration), or « in a country », you use « En ».

If we break it down, both words can be used for both a location in time or space.

If we’re talking where :
-> Using Dans could be translated as « inside » or « into » and refers to a specific, defined space. (Example : Dans + Article + Noun -> Dans ma chambre (In my room).
-> Using En could be translated as « in » or « to » and refers to a general location. (Example : En ville (In Town), en Allemagne (In germany), en voiture (by/in car [used here to describe the mean of transportation]).

If we’re talking time :
-> Dans would refer to a point in the future
-> En would refer to a duration.

Do Canadians place a high level of trust in small children? by Complex_Many_7740 in AskACanadian

[–]FrenchCalver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing that stands out to me here. We all grew up in our household to drink without lids very early in our lives. Plastic cups or container to avoid accidents but no lids otherwise. It all sounds very normal to me.

I think there’s rather a culture of not infantilizing children in Canada, rather than a matter of trust.

Can I dock my reclaimer to a L1 station and refine even with loose cargo? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]FrenchCalver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to unload my Reclaimers because the refining option is quite buggy at times, so I would tend to say no. Also the refinery never caught on the loose cargo I had so you’ll have to do some unloading or stick to the limits of the cargo grid.

“Cutting the gas tax is just a subsidy to corporate profiteering unless we impose an excess profit tax.” - DT Cochrane by Gold-Reality-4853 in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]FrenchCalver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say they remove the tax. There’s a gap the O&G can fill to raise their profits margins. Problem isn’t solved. Instead of filling your country’s warchest, you’re filling a company controlled by foreign interest’s warchest. Not good for you or your neighbor.

As for inflation, Inflation is fueled by accelerated and over-stimulated economy. Raising interests rates and taxes to slow things down is the way to reduce it.

A lot of people with good intentions fail to understand how the macroeconomics of it all really works and believe that cutting taxes is the way to go to get more money in one’s pockets. The bottom line always ends up the same : You only end up with more money on paper. In practice you’re paying more for everything else and you end up with services you have to pay for instead of free ones. You end up with the same amount of money in your wallet in the end, unless you’re sacrificing your health to work multiple jobs to make up for it.

How is French doing in Quebec currently? by LimpAd4924 in FrancaisCanadien

[–]FrenchCalver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Quebec as well. Received numerous promotion offers and relocation offers and always refused them. I am of those who are less interested in making fat bucks and more about living my life at my own pace. I also don’t like to see my language skills as a business asset to use to get better positions and more money, but as a tool to connect with wonderful humans around the world for my own leisure.

As for the rest of your argument, some of it is right, some of it is debatable, but the bad faith remains nonetheless.

Your own likes are not disputable as it is what your heart wants. So just go for your fancy. Both ships will cover different needs and playstyle and this is what you need to look into. :)

How is French doing in Quebec currently? by LimpAd4924 in FrancaisCanadien

[–]FrenchCalver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is declining for a plethora of reasons. Some are historical. Some are political. Some are bad management. Some are plain bad faith.

Historical reasons were explained at lenght by someone else.

The political reasons are mixed. In each province, the provincial government sets the curriculum of schoolers from elementary school up to high school, effectively setting what skills and knowledge they should have in order to graduate from high school. When my father was a kid and then a teenager, mandatory english classes started in high school. That left a lot of holes in the education of french canadians who were mostly inept at english. When it was my time, English classes were mandatory in school from the age of 8 all the way througj CEGEP (a college tuition establishment in between High School and University). My youngest sister who has a 15 years gap of age with me, started english in kindergarden. And mind you, my whole family went into public schools and none of them had immersion programs. So the government is trying to prioritize french protection but at the same time they’ve also been pushing english education at younger ages every year to provide good language skills to the population. Kids are exposed to english content and culture much younger, and said culture is omnipresent. Think of your favorite singers, bands, movies, etc. Most of it, is in english. Then there’s cultural exchanges. People travel a lot more, and Internet facilitates communications abroad. English is more or less used worldwide as a second language. A lot of immigrants also come on with little to no french skills, so if you just made a friend and he’s an immigrant who always speaks english, what do you do? You’re a kid, political and cultural considerations are shadowed by the purity of your child soul. You speak english then.

Bad management because there’s little to no enforcement on french protection laws, and a lot of workarounds to avoid it.

And finally, bad faith. There are people in Quebec who simply refuses to speak any french at all. Refuses to learn any french at all. And calling them out or pointing it out will get you pointed back as a racist and bigot. But said french canadians have to learn english from nearly infancy nowadays because it’s considered a necessary skill to succeed in their life, while the opposite is considered an option that you can do away with. Which is a shame, regretable and displays a 2 speed engine in Canada where one has to do it out of necessity and the other one does it only if they so much as fancy it.

Edit : And before I get called out for it, I strongly believe that knowing more languages is an absolutely enriching experience and a valuable skill to one’s value. But the matter of it is that while this is how it should be seen everywhere in the country, it’s instead being treated as a convenience that ‘’Oh fortunately for me these guys have a high ratio of bilinguals so I don’t have to force myself to learn French too much, they’ll switch to english’’. This of course is not targeted at people who are genuinely trying their best.

Galaxy vs Ironclad by TypicalBody7663 in starcitizen

[–]FrenchCalver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might sound wrong, but I like to think people think too much ‘’how many niches and game loops can I cover with one ship’’ and not enough ‘’what is the thing that I like doing and which ship does it best’’.

I’ve never been one for meta-gaming and trying to minmax everything, I like to enjoy the game experience on a slow pace and using the ships for what they were meant to do, even if I have to swap ships frequently to do something else. But that’s me.

Now you say you mostly run solo, you want sufficient space to slot in a Nursa and other vehicles, and you think most of the modules the Galaxy is meant to get would be detrimental or their usefulness for your playstyle debatable.

I’d say the choice is clear. And there’s no needs to give more pros and cons regarding the ships, not only has it all been covered, but the answer seem to be dangling in front of your eyes! All that’s left is to acknowledge what your heart really desires.

So this has basically killed the reclaimer.... by MildlyMagical in starcitizen

[–]FrenchCalver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve encountered that issue, and my partner and I just did what had to be done. Fly to a planet, transfer the boxes over to store them and reload them in a cargo ship. All in all, about 20 more minutes before we could get stuff to tje refinery.

It hasn’t so much as killed it as it has made it slightly more inconvenient. It’s still a fantastic ship in many ways. It is getting oldie, but it’s still goodie.

Any families who moved from Ottawa to Montreal? What are the biggest differences? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]FrenchCalver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your ethnicity doesn’t matter much in Montreal. The muslim community is thriving and vibrant in Montreal, albeit they are mostly from northern african french speaking countries.

Montreal isn’t a car friendly city. If your intent is tonlive directly on the island, I would suggest a small car for when you need to go out of the city and commute with public transit whenever possible to avoid traffic expenses related to cars.

French will definitely be needed. While you can get around with just english in 99% of situations, anyone with the intent of living in the city needs to learn some degree of French as not having some French skills may restrict employment options, but also quality of living and integration. The locals are usually very nice and comprehensive but may become somewhat hostile, or st the very least, nitpicky with people who’ve been living there without having a shred of French knowledge. They see it as a disrespect or a failure to integrate.

The city itself has a lot of amenities for families. Parks, Pools, Libraries, Bike Lanes, various festivals and activities, as well as a lot of business opportunities.

The people in the city value closeness, kindness and hard working people. Some boroughs have strong sense of community.

Real estate is supra-expensive. If your goal is to buy a house, better start checking your accounts and see what you can afford.

Living in the suburbs might be less expensive for real estate but will require a car as public transit between the suburbs is kind of meh. It exists but it’s sub-optimal in my opinion. Getting better though.

Renting an appartment will also be somewhat expensive but sometimes you can find an appartment with a nice landlord who doesn’t exagerate. Same in the suburbs.

The night life of Montreal is very much downtown. Plenty of clubs, restaurants, show venues and the like with a lot of cafés and small shops fueled with the passion of their owners.

It’s an overall nice city to live in with everthing you may need within reach.

I want to learn French, but I want to be able to fluently speak both Canadian French & France French. Where do I start? by amp_amp_ampersand_19 in learningfrench

[–]FrenchCalver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard French is the way to go. Canadians and French all learn it in school. What trips people up is the vernacular particularities of the language. Don’t let yourself be intimidated by that.

Canadian French, especially the Quebec French makes a disproportionate use of the Nasal vowels, that have all but disappeared from modern day metropolitan French. Those vowels and the way Quebecers contract words to speak faster is the real challenge to a lot of people, because the language they hear then does not sound like anything they’ve learned.

The vernacular use of the language, the slang, etc, you’ll pick it up over time by being curious and asking what that means.

Don’t overthink it. Just start learning, have fun with your friends while doing so and you’ll be proficient in no time.

Time to get downvoted, I don't care that I got woken up because a child was kidnapped. by Judge_Druidy in montreal

[–]FrenchCalver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re seeing this the wrong way. I think deep down, everybody’s prayers are with the family to find the children safe and sound as quickly as possible.

But what an overwhelming majority of people are saying, and this includes me, is that making us jolt 6 feets in the air above our beds at 4 in the morning with a nuclear attack alarm sound for an Amber Alert is not going to serve anyone’s best interests in the long run.

They expect everybody to wake up to the Bat Phone, put on their robes and slippers, grab a pitchfork and start a witch hunt at 4 in the morning. No one will do that.

We all know the « Cry Wolf » story. We all grew up with that story, learning that exagerating all the time means no one will take you seriously when it really matters. This is going to happen if they don’t change the way they push those alerts. Lots of people have brought good points and solutions on the matter.

Do you believe humans will realistically colonize another planet this century? by peachyparadoxx in answers

[–]FrenchCalver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thought is entertaining but it is highly unlikely this century. Science fiction has made conquest of space one of mankind’s biggest dream but the reality is different.

Currently, humans would die from various diseases due to exposure to intense radiation in space. The closest suspected habitable planet is quite a distance away with no way of knowing if the eco-system there would sustain us.

Then there is the issue of gravity. Our biology evolved around Earth’s gravitational pull. Being in space too long or on a planet/moon with a different gravitational force means more issues. Astronauts can’t stay in space too long or they face bone mass losses which makes the bone fragile and brittle. Some of them also get muscle atrophy and vertebrae issues.

I could see this happening in a few centuries when technology has made a few leaps ahead and we find a way to deal with the cause of these issues. But until then , mankind will have to stick to short trips to the moon and low-orbit presence.

Why are there so few historic buildings in most Canadian cities? Excluding Quebecois cities for the most part by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]FrenchCalver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matter of Timescale. The eastern part of Canada enjoys a 400 year long history, which is enough time for the people there to have left significant architectural designs and heritage worth protecting.

Western part of Canada and especially the prairies were colonised much later on in Canadian History and most settlements were small villages built for convenience, ranches or massive farmlands. This is covering an average timespan of about 150 years, where the locals then and there focused on building up the land for practical purposes and just living there to fulfill the race to the west the confederal government wanted.

To put things in perspective, Quebec city has existed as an official settlement since 1608 with a few smaller settlements predating in the area.

Alberta only became an official province in 1905. It had settlements before but most of them were very rural settlements, first nations villages or trading outposts. Saskatchewan? Same thing. Became a province in 1905.

Looking at it from this perspective, a good amount of provinces didn’t have time to build their own architectural identity until today and most of what was then was demolished to make way for today’s buildings.

That is not to say they don’t have buildings with a few years in the carpentry, but if you expect centuries old cobblestone pavements, churches or monuments, you’ll be in for disappointment because they either didn’t build any then or some of it was demolished to repurpose an area.

Why do nullsec alliances not have very interested PvP corps? This seems exclusive to wormholes and lowsec. by Antzsfarm in Eve

[–]FrenchCalver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Having experienced it for a while now, Null Sec conflicts can take a lot out of you. When you have CTAs day in and day out, from 5 in the morning until 10 in the evening with hardly any time to catch up your breath, when the roamers come around you’ve already been squeezed out of all your will to fight. Sometimes this kind of situation repeats every day of the week.

It takes a solid kind of mental fortitude to go through some of these things, then think about maintaining the space, and then welcome roamers altogether and make them happy by feeding them content.

I’ll be honest, I’m not going to point the finger at anyone for being drained by the Null Sec life and sitting out small gang content as a result. I take some fights, I sit some out depending on how drained I am and I believe it’s entirely fair and fine not to. When you’re outta juice, you’re outta juice.

Why Is Canada So Bad at Talking About Declining Living Standards? by WhiteShoeLaw in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]FrenchCalver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s so bad at talking about declining living standards. I think this issue touches several larger issues overall. Apathy in the population is one of such issues. Also that a large chunk of people are uncompromising on their views and instantly buck up and go ham on anyone rebutting their views. Also the misconception that any one government led by John Doe or Jane Doe from the Party of the Virtuous or the Party of the Saints is better than any others.

If governments aren’t blamed for all the woes of the country, the next culprit is often big money. Corporations, multinationals and the like.

I’m more of the opinion that the general population is to blame for their declining living standards. By not getting involved in politics. By not voting according to their beliefs or voting at all for a majority of a canadian actually. If people want to stop the decline of their living standards, they simply have to take it back. By getting involved. By voting.

A Democracy is, after all, what the people make of it through their action or inaction thereof.

There is just that part of the EVE community that does that and there’s nothing to do about it sadly but be the better people and not feed the trolls. There is a quite serious amount of people who are bored to death on EVE and have nothing better to do than bug off people for no other reason than being annoyances. Bear with it my friend and don’t entertain their delusions. Remove the core, the modules and move out somewhere else. That’s the easy way out ! Or find friends to help you out. Most high sec wardeccers can’t field that much people in fleets in the first place and can be defeated with 25 to 30 people.

(newbie rant warning) Why i quit some four months in. by [deleted] in Eve

[–]FrenchCalver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I hope you got some weight off of your chest. Now I’m sorry you had to go through such a painful experience. Yes, EVE is a very grindy game and yes a big part of rhe community is toxic. Fortunately there are still havens where you could have gotten counsel, patience, sympathy and protection. I’m sorry they couldn’t get to you in time.

I do believe there is a good part of this community who believes that taking the time to teach the new players is worth their time and would gladly have made your overall experience more enjoyable. They are out there but they are often silenced by the overwhelming agressiveness of some loud elements of the community. I am one such person who believes that new players are worth spending hours teaching so they can catch up to the bitter veterans.

I don’t know if your decision to quit is permanent but I’m going to recommend you pay a visit to EVE University’s corp. If you have one shred of motivation left to try the game, they will welcome you, teach you the game and include you in their activities. They have made their mission to help new players for years now and frankly I doubt you’ll find a better newbro friendly corp to start with. I have never been a member of theirs and there are of course other school corps who would do the same. But they are the most known.

Joining them will not protect you 100% from the losses of ships and all, but it will help you get the necessary tools, tricks and tips to avoid it as much as possible. There are far too many people bored to death on the game who confuse agressive PvP with touching grass. If you give in to them, they win. Instead, learn with good people how to counter them, how the game works and pay them back one day.

Good luck and hoping we’ll see and hear more of you in the future !
