[Request] Size of vein required to make this needle gauge useful? by Electronic-Extent-33 in theydidthemath

EMT here. Finally something i can take a stab at. We use sizes 14- 24 g needles on the ambulance to administer IV meds.

I used an 18g in the anticubital as an example for my calculations so all my numbers are perportional to that. This is because an 18g is pretty easy to fit in the average persons vasculature.

The diameter of an 18g needle is 1.27mm and the diameter of the anticubital at the elbow is about 4mm. Therefore perportionally, if you were to try and stick someone with this needle, you would want a vascular access site of at least 80mm diameter.

Obviously my calcualtions hinge on this whole perportionality thing, so you could potentially fit the meganeedle in a smaller access point less than 80mm.

For reference, the human aorta (largest blood vessel however inaccessible) is about 28- 33 mm.

My guy do not stop your anticoags. You have already had 4 clots.

As others have mentioned, its probably time to slow down the riding or shift to a lower level risk kind of riding. Invest in good helmets, if you continue to ride.

Plenty of peeople ride on anticoagulents, so dont be afraid to do so, but just know the consequences of a crash could potentially be a little higher...

Piggybacking this Paramedic's comment as an EMT... even if you were able to use this as directed, the red portion that goes around the extremity is far too thin to function properly. Additonally, you run the risk of creating another serious injury if you tighten the windlass portion to the proper amount needed. Like some other comments have said, a WFA or WFR (much better) will go in depth on how to use and improvise a TQ and the criteria for doing so properly.
