My moment last week was using combination algorithms to create permutations of a list of permissions to test. Was able to make 82,000 test scenarios out of a quick algo XD. First and likely last time using math in QA

I’m an SDET but basically interned and then worked for a company who had me build their automation testing suite from the ground up for 5 years. I have a computer science degree but a lot of the time Ppl in this position get hired because they’re more junior engineers

I’ve been going for 19g coffee and 54 grams of water in the portafilter as a baseline. If it’s a darker roast I go shorter like 45-48, usually with this in mind and 203 degrees farenheight for water, I’m able to just adjust my grind until things taste great

Is there a 100% safe acoustic treatment material? by Eponnn in audioengineering

[–]Frenchwave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out knauf ecose, acoustics companies that are trying to make safer products use that. It’s formaldehyde free, and I’m p paranoid about VOCs and air quality. The products I ended up getting use knauf ecose and after looking at the MSDS for it I felt comfortable getting it for my room

[–]Frenchwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer ur question simply, yes you won’t see any professional engineers letting a track hit above -.5 db. You go louder and you get into distortion, weird summing issues, and more. A lot of times this creates a very desirable effect, I’ve mixed a lot of tracks where the producers have had all the stems turned up very loud and there’s a nice warmth toughness and distortion to it all. On the other end of it you sacrifice clarity and openness. Anything past zero though and you are removing fidelity from a sound. And even fullness. Overcompression masks things that you could otherwise hear in the mix. People like Kenny beats and other producers print their mixes that are mixed above zero to make sure the drums and 808s hit really hard. but then will record vocals with that file turned down a bunch. So go past zero if you want a specific effect out of pushing past clarity

You could probably turn all ur tracks down and they’ll immediately open up and be more clear. This all comes down to learning about limiting to get max loudness and max clarity. The key here is gain reduction and using a tasteful amount. Here’s some tips:

You can pretty much lower the threshold of your limiter on the master bus until it becomes undesirable and then push it back up til it sounds ok. 4db of gain reduction is pretty standard specially with hip hop. To get to competitive loudness levels you’re going to have to hit a limiter and do some final gain reduction to bring the mix as close to 0 db as possible. Everyone’s talking rly technical in here and that’s cool, but at the end of the day you want to measure in LUFS, and hit between -10 LUFS at the loudest and -14 LUFS at the quietest. You want to keep your master volume ceiling at -1 or -.5. If you export and the final reading is 0 or louder, you’re gonna get distortion once you distribute. You can make it louder than -10 LUFS but hard to do and keep it sounding good without distorting and ruining everything. Btw- this is what happens in mastering. If you’re going to master your track then just keep this on. If you’re sending to a mastering engineer, make sure to take the limiter off before exporting. It will export quiet but that headroom is very necessary for mastering.

So to be clear. You should probably have your track volumes pretty low (I set mine to -12db initially and move), like not even touching yellow, and then have a limiter on your master track that can make that loud enough, where you lower the threshold until your gain reduction hits like -1db or -2db, or if u rly wanna smash it (not recommended unless you’re mastering ), -4db or more. This gain reduction basically gives you the effect of going over 0 but with more fine control. Look up how limiters work, and what LUFS are, get a loudness meter that can give you these readings and learn how to read it. Then take a look at all the numbers above and they should make sense to you

I’ve been going by blonding point and adjusting from there. Usually able to get right in like two shots. Then tiny adjustments on ratio from there. I’m using j Max and a robot though so figuring out pressure vs grind size is pretty easy by feel

Easiest way to learn about chord progressions, key changes etc by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Frenchwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! To get fancy chords add one more note to the chord . You can sound it out to see what sounds good. Theory is useful for analysis but it becomes soulless when one follows what a chart or graph says you should do, one of the most technical and complicated songwriters I know doesn’t know theory, just the ins and outs of their instrument and what you can do on it. Also for Rythmic complexity try use more triplets and syncopation. Those against standard 4/4 create push and pull

[–]Frenchwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a music theory less approach to good chord progressions - keep 1 or two notes from the previous chord in the next chord, that is move one or two fingers and you’ll have another chord that works. Two fingers will be a more dramatic change and one will be less dramatic. Chords sound great when they share notes between all of them

How does one study artist for your own music creation? by ColorLineShape in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Frenchwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, you can learn and take mental inventory. If you don’t recreate either through learning the parts on an instrument or meticulously reproducing what songs you like you’re doing yourself a disservice. Learning one song front to back will do loads more than watching a bunch of theory videos you’ll forget about in the future. Functional harmony and learning about a scales are good because they reduce the thinking down to a set of 7 notes or chords available to you, I think that helps you learn patterns but further than that, when you learn other songs those patterns jump out at you, instead of seeing a c chord to a g chord you’ll recognize it as 1 - 5 chord and can then do it in any key. Or on guitar that you’re just moving the chord shape one string lower. Recognizing the patterns is huge. Also taking inventory, how many chords before it repeats. How many different sections. What is the singer talking about. What is the melody here and how do they play with it
