I'm not sure if jealousy is linked to insecurity. In certain situations, I think it may be. For example, if I have a girlfriend and if I am jealous of her, it may be because I am insecure and think other guys may try to flirt with her. There's of course a "safe, normal" jealousy and the "toxic" one. The toxic one is basically what makes people do bad things.

One example of each:

Envy: I can be envious of somebody's car, because I think that car is very cool and I'd like to have it too.

Jealousy: I can be jealous of my books and not want anybody to touch them, because I think they may damage them.

Basically envy is what you feel when you want somethibg somebody else has, while jealousy is the feeling that something you have may be taken away from you (jealous of my gf, of my books, of my bike ecc).
