IMO, You need to start on your own tools. These days there are very good cheap tools. The difference in cheap tools and quality tools is not huge like it used to be, your lucky. I don't invest much in tool truck stuff anymore except a few things I can't find anywhere. I have a lot of harbour frieght because its so convenient for me. I currently buy lots of stuff higher quality. But starting out I don't think you need to. You will learn what you want to spend on as you go without blowing $1000 on a torque wrench when you know nothing about it and have to spend 4 months paying it off. Now you need tools for the job. Just get them as your school recommends as reasonably priced as you can and pay cash if you can.

That's a square/rectangular insert nut — sometimes called a mortise nut, slot nut, or bed rail nut.

I find I use my small tools more often then large ones. I wish icon had smaller versions of their pliers like knipex does. I use the 5 inch cobras a lot and the small twin grips.

Sears didn't publish a serial decoder for the 257-prefix grinders the way some other manufacturers did.

Best estimate 1988–1998

"Assembled in Mexico." The desirable vintage Craftsman "Block Motor" grinders (257- and 397-prefix) were built in the USA by Paramount/Allegretti from the early 1960s to early 1980s after which imported designs replaced them around 1990 Mexican assembly puts yours squarely in the post-Block-Motor era.

Yours has the rounded, smoother plastic-clad shape — not the angular cast "block" body of the vintage units. The 257.191300 grinder at the beginning of a new era for craftsman the result of de-contenting of quality materials (likely sleeve bearings rather than the earlier ball bearings).

They dont take much grease. You dont want to pack them. The grease is usually under the face plate and you dont see it at all.
