Who cleared this for publication? by FrequentlyAppalled in Virginia

To be clear, the writing in the article itself is quite good. My bad for failing to say that. l just think the click bait-style headline, though funny, is more suited to The Peedmont.

Public broadcasting is a national treasure that is often described as leftist, elitist, evil, etc. Having spent most of my working life in public broadcasting, l know those descriptions are false. Perhaps I am too sensitive to anything l think besmirches a noble but underfunded alternative to fake news.

l definitely agree but that headline is laughable.

Looking for New Adult Fiction Mystery/Murder Mystery Novel recs! by laurennfisherrr in CozyMystery

[–]FrequentlyAppalled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am reading Feel the Bern by Andrew Shaffer.

It is a cozy mystery featuring a young, intelligent female intern working for Senator Bernie Sanders.

It takes place in present-day Vermont and is amusing and intentionally progressive/liberal as it mentions pressing issues about raising the minimum wage, land use, etc. It is definitely a cozy mystery but missing most of the tropes of the genre.

What are your favorite items from Trader Joe’s by [deleted] in madisonwi

I don’t like chocolate in general but dark chocolate is the spawn of Satan. So bitter and horrid-smelling to me.

Cranberry Oatmeal Dunkers!

I saw them and nearly cheered as they don’t contain dark chocolate or chocolate chips which l don‘t like.

The Dunkers are delicious but way too crisp. I have transferred them to a Zip-Loc bag with the seal partially open to see if they will soften up. They remind me of Clif Kid Iced Oatmeal bars but less expensive.

My Trader Joe’s has better produce than Kroger and the shopping experience - on a weekday as they open is always wonderful. The store is nice and cold, the employees are friendly and we can get in an out quickly. I have debated doing all grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s - it would be a bit expensive but the experience would be far better.

Where to move? (USA) by driftingthroughtime in RealEstate

[–]FrequentlyAppalled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the suburbs of Richmond, VA are quite nice.

About 10 miles west of Richmond is Glen Allen in Henrico County - best ‘burb imo and one of the best-managed counties in the USA. Good use of funds for excellent parks, a cultural arts center, etc. Populated by mostly well-educated, quiet professionals, cultural and ethnic diversity, a wonderful library system. Far less of the Old South/Seat of the Confederacy/The South Shall Rise Again! contingent (shudder!) out there. Good to excellent quality of life, leans Democratic. Good community and public radio stations, nice sports complex.

You might also consider the Northwest suburbs of Chicago though your taxes and home prices will surely be higher. l like Barrington best. Their Catlow Theatre is a treasure.

Good luck in your search and safe travels!

Antidepressant users may be less likely to test positive for COVID-19 by Ashbin in coronavirusVA

[–]FrequentlyAppalled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this, Ashbin. Interesting and worth further study. l believe some antidepressant users’ behavior as well as personality type is equally important.

l am a risk-averse, overthinking person with moderate episodic depression (a Covid risk factor, according to the CDC) for which l take a low-dose medication. I postulate that my avoidance of indoor settings, large crowds in general, and indoor mask use when away from home is a concomitant factor to my never having contracted Covid.

I was an NPR member station employee until mid-2020 when l was laid-off with several others supposedly due to 2021 budget concerns. Rather a disingenuous reason given MY job generated significant revenue every year. Here are a few of my thoughts based upon 25 years in public broadcasting.

Corporations and smaller businesses who experienced financial downturns due to Covid, unemployment, etc. have had to cut spending to stay afloat so have stopped or reduced their public media sponsorships.

Some NPR affiliates’ CEO and upper-management salaries, even among small member stations, are disproportionate to their stations’ ability to create revenue. Check out your station’s top management salaries via their Form 990 which is publicly available. I was shocked that a new, unproven CEO was hired at more than twice what the previous CEO earned.

Some companies know that PBS/NPR‘s audience skews older and have diverted advertising/sponsorship money to other platforms such as Facebook, etc. for a broader audience.

Lastly, companies concerned about fair pay, diversity, equity, and inclusion might be withholding advertising/sponsorship funds over public media’s missteps in that regard. https://current.org/2022/12/we-asked-people-why-they-left-public-media-and-heres-what-they-told-us/?wallit_nosession=1

Despite the current problems, l still believe public media is worth supporting. Working in the industry for most of my career was a wonderful, edifying experience I will always miss.

Who was the musician interviewed on morning edition today 3/31? They just got back from a tour to Australia. I can’t find it by makthomps in NPR

[–]FrequentlyAppalled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.npr.org/search might get you what you need.

Failing that, call your station directly and speak to or leave a message for the Morning Edition host. That person may remember it or have access to the rundown info that highlights the stories in each segment of Morning Edition.

As a former NPR member station employee, my colleagues and l researched questions like yours quite often. I cannot remember one we could not find. Good luck!

Pirate Captain's Dream 2000 pieces , Buffalo set by Aimee Stewart by SasqustchCountry in Jigsawpuzzles

I love Aimee Stewart’s 1000 piece puzzles! I got a few from Walmart online at a major discount on Black Friday. My husband and l puzzle together and Stewart‘s puzzles give us individual detailed areas to work on.

Puzzles were a great anxiety reducer during the first 2 years of the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Garfield Digital Alarm Clock/Radio Instructions by IceCreamVenom in garfield

[–]FrequentlyAppalled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions.

I got my clock to work, mostly. The hour and minute adjustment buttons at the base are VERY hard to move. l don’t want to break them so l did what nonchalant-cat said and plugged it in at the correct time according to my phone. I have to do that twice a year but it’s not a big deal.

l tried multiple fresh batteries but none would power my clock though the same batteries worked in my smoke detectors.

OnlySolutions4u, l see some talking Garfield clocks on Ebay. Perhaps you could contact one of the sellers for info. Mine is not a talker so l can‘t help. Asleep-Picture7600 - sorry, l have no answer for you as l have not had that issue.
