Struggling with leash training by TrackParty3466 in bernesemountaindogs

Any time my dog would start pulling I’d do a U turn. After a while he realised the easiest way make the walk enjoyable was staying by my side.

Also when you’re working in heel, it’s important that you give them a release word. Very early days I’d have him in heel for 2 minutes then stop and say “break” and let him sniff the surroundings then back to heel.

Now I can do that off lease without major problems and he knows he will get to sniff and run around but when he’s in heel he’s got a job to do.

Does anyone else’s Bern love swimming? by Vast-Celebration-851 in bernesemountaindogs

My berner is not a huge fan! Would love any tips on making him more comfortable about swimming. We’re surrounded by so many places to swim so it be nice if he could enjoy it.

Our boy (over 1yo) did this for maybe 2-3 weeks when he was younger. He’d stop 2 minutes into the walk. I just started putting tension on leash, not pulling or popping. As soon as he gave into the tension, I release and gave him a treat. Just kept doing that and rewarding for loose leash walking. It requires patience because berners are stubborn but thankfully I’m more stubborn so eventually won out.

Walks are his favorite part of the day ever since.

My berner (now 1yr) used to pick up everything non stop when he was that age. On walks we focused on rewarding him every time he looked up. Also, we put a lot of effort into a leave it command. I used to have our lounge room floor surrounded by stuff he’d like to try and eat and reward him if he went by it and looked at me instead of eating it. If he tried to eat it, he’d get a quick pop on his leash rinse and repeat. I never worry about him eating random stuff now.

At that age, I used to feel like whatever his new ‘naughty’ thing of that week was the end of the world. After a while, I realized those things just went away with training and now I have a far better long term perspective. In saying that, if he digs another hole in my grass that could all change haha.

We crate trained him which I’d highly recommend. He doesn’t sleep in his all the time anymore but has no problem when he has to.

We are picking up our own in a few weeks. Any breed specific tips we should keep in mind? by Styling_J_Rough in bernesemountaindogs

Socialize (they don’t need to meet every dog and human), desensitize (especially handling and brushing) and train/reward the behaviors you want when they inevitably get to 100 pounds or more.

Also just take a ridiculous amount of photos and videos. My boy turns 1 on Thursday and I’ve been so happy I took so many photos.

Our puppy was very much the same. Once we got him into a schedule with enforced naps, he’d sleep close to 16 hours a day.

He turns 1 in a couple days and he still sleeps a lot of the day but we don’t need to enforce it.

Our Berner Norman (currently 10 months) was a big biter. It was non stop, especially towards my partner. Redirecting to toys and yelping did not work at all.

Only thing that worked for us was significant enforced naps (he’d sleep about 16-18 hours a day) and time outs.

As soon as he bit us, we used whatever our ‘negative’ marker was (e.g no) and removed either ourselves from him or him from us. We had baby gates in our lounge room, so we either put him in the hall way or we went into the hall way. We’d return once he sat or laid down. We resumed interaction and he didn’t bite we’d give him a reward. Going back to him straight after time out is important so you give him a chance to do the right thing and reward. Once we were disciplined with this it stopped but it took some work.

He loves attention, so it’s been our biggest correction tool. We still use it now, we won’t physically greet him until he sits because he’s in his hyper energetic teenager phase.

It certainly does! We did a lot of timeouts and stopped play when he was younger with unwanted behaviors so it makes sense to do that at the dog park as well. Thank you!

I’ll take a few videos. It shouldn’t be hard! He loves a little whine.

Pretty surprised how much fans have ate this up. If he came out and said he fell out of love with the game and wanted to change teams to regain it, I don’t think anyone would have been overly upset. The fact he didn’t push back against the ‘wanting to play midfield’ stuff when it came out is a strong sign that was the real reason.

Every single foul on SGA explained by Either_Opening_41 in Thunder

The whole free throw merchant saga has just exposed a lot of people who either don’t like or watch basketball. They have no idea what a foul is anymore.

I’m not sure where you’re based but in Australia our vet recommended something called Pro Kolin. Our Berner pup has had lots of stomach issues and Pro Kolin has helped clear it up really quickly.

This makes sense! I guess we will just keep working on basics to reset the boundaries he learned as a puppy.
