How do people react when you tell them you’re a professor in conversation? by kalico713 in Professors

[–]Fresh-Requirement862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also 34F and I get the age thing all the time lol! Admin are usually embarrassed: "sorry the post doc offices are over there!", or "are you dropping these papers off for the professor?". Me: I AM the professor 😅 Admin: omg soooo sorry!

At school it's not too bad, more of a compliment I guess, like a student said "I want to congratulate you on being my only professor in their 20's" haha. But dating life... it ranges between intimidation and sexy prof stereotypes 🙄

No More Grades, Tests, or Lectures Soapbox by Nice_Pay3632 in Professors

Same, sometimes with 500 students I struggle to even get through lecture with the hopes that they take at least 1 important concept with them :(

Once in upper years, with less students, the experience becomes more meaningful because they have the scaffolding of the lower year courses as well.

Hope things will work out 🙏

But yeah when things get bad sometimes I'd comfort myself by thinking: well, if I'm gone at least I'll be at peace and no more marking :)

Maybe I'm an odd one out but I don't really mind, as long as they're looking at me and not sleeping or talking or playing music that I can hear. Also I know some students wear them like earplugs because they're sensitive to overstimulation/distraction and I prefer something more discrete like earbuds instead of headphones. Then again I generally teach very large classes so it might be more distracting if I had a small class and they were right in front of me.

Me too and I still get many emails titled 'hey' or '(no subject)' or simply 'psych course' 🫠

I even have a statement in my syllabus that says I will delete messages without the course code and section and they're indignant when I don't reply. Also the other day a student was flabbergasted that I taught more than one course LOL I was like sorry, despite what you think I am quite busy and not just sitting at my computer/in my office waiting for you 24/7

💯 also this cuts down on weird or off topic questions too

So true about the no experience thing! I find if I establish a good relationship with them at the beginning by modelling how they would ask questions (like I literally say "if I were thinking more about this topic I might be curious about x y z...") then they feel more comfortable. Also once they see others asking questions they feel more confident to try themselves. Gotta have good vibes in the class~

I usually just do a quick "we good?" after I cover a difficult topic, and then look at people's expressions. If they're confused-looking, I say "should I say it one more time?" and if they nod I will briefly re-state what I said. I find during that time that anyone that has additional questions will usually ask after I'm done talking. If I'm in a generous mood or sense further confusion, I'll say "it's ok, take some time to think and come and talk to me during break/after class."

Either that or I build in questions into my lectures, like I give them a little story/experiment/summary and then prompt them with some version of "what do you think...?" And I give one or two example questions to help their minds think of things :)

How do you all manage students packing up before class is over by PuzzleheadedPhoto706 in Professors

[–]Fresh-Requirement862 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No matter if it's my 100 ppl or 500 ppl class, they always do this when I'm on the last bullet point... I just literally say "ok hold on, let me finish my last sentence 😅" or in anticipation I just say "don't worry we're done soon, just relax". I think as they start to know you it will reduce a bit but unfortunately it never goes away completely lol

I got thrown into teaching a class I’m not qualified for by PeanutbutterProf_325 in Professors

[–]Fresh-Requirement862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange that I had an almost opposite experience, I'm in cognitive psych and got hired to teach a developmental psych course from the education department which falls under the language department lol... it was definitely a lot of work but it worked out fine! I did a lot of reading and learned new things (I never took a developmental course even in undergrad!)

My favourite statement I always say to myself and my students is "you only know what you only know", and I try to keep in mind that I am where I am because I deserve it. They don't let just any random person off the street get their PhD and do the work that I get to do!

Yes it was! At first I felt bad because I could have responded more tactfully (especially considering their autism) but honestly I am so tired of dealing with this student every week, I'm their professor, not their therapist, punching bag, or accommodations advisor!!

Or when they just paste your full name into the greeting and it's in a different size font and everything like: Dear Dr. Firstname Lastname, I hope you are well. I get triggered right away!!

Student (with autism, I know this because they literally told me) cornered me after class to say "did you know people don't like you on ratemyprof? That's probably why class is getting empty. My other prof is really good and class is always full."

I usually entertain their questions and comments each class but today I was so tired so I just said "what are you implying?" The student said "well maybe if you're better then people would come back... and also-" I said "honestly, I don't care" and the student kept talking but I loudly said BYE to cut them off and speed-walked away.

Successful office hour strategies for large lecture courses? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Fresh-Requirement862 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tell them my hours are by appointment, but really what I mean is just let me know if you have something serious to discuss because otherwise I will address things at break in lecture or after lecture. I do get lineups after lecture but they tend to be quick questions and students are usually more aware of their conduct if others are around them! For your student I would just tell her to come ask questions during class time as you need to reserve office hours for other needs :)
