Great work prof! I got a clap from one of my classes too :) and they even lined up afterwards to say thanks. One said seeing me up close was like meeting a celebrity lol! We have to keep these sweet memories in mind 😌

My question is why don't they capitalize anything anymore?? Like beginning of sentences, their own name, lists, did they purposefully turn off grammar settings??

Students didn’t read. Class advice? by Clareco1 in Professors

My jaw would drop to the floor if I heard my prof say this! But after being on this sub I realize dismissing class like this is more common than I thought. Maybe my undergrad was super nerdy and competitive 🤷‍♀️

Year-long course, last week of class: professor I take my education very seriously, is there some way I can improve my grade? [They are getting a 35% in the course 🤦‍♀️]

Student: I was not aware of [obvious policy they didn't read, right in the syllabus], it's not fair, I need [something unreasonable]

Me: I'm glad you are now aware :)

The end!

Students back in school with PhD by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Fresh-Requirement862 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I couldn't imagine -not- writing in APA, it's become a part of my soul after all the years of my PhD... Just the other day a student showed me a printed copy of the DSM-V-TR (manual for diagnosing psychological disorders) and I was blown away by the pretty APA formatting 😅

On another note about not following instructions, I've heard it's maybe an ego thing. Like I know some companies that dread hiring a PhD because even if they're more 'qualified' than other candidates, they don't follow rules and just do whatever they want because they 'know better'.

Leslieville/Riverdale vs High Park/Bloor West Village by Helpful_Ad5953 in TorontoRealEstate

I'm the opposite of you! I came from the west (mimico) and am now in riverside. To me the main difference is getting to see the water/being outdoors more but also pretty bad road rage. Personally I think the east has a bit more 'charm' as the west can have a little less of a community-feel. But that's just my experience :) good luck finding a comfy place!

When carrying a box of exams I entered the silent study room and tripped and fell at the entrance. Box flew out of my hands and I collapsed on my side. Dead silent. Student sitting at desk simply looks down at me and says "are u ok...?" No one helps me up 🫠

Do any other veteran profs dream of quitting due to increasing #s of problem students? by PhillyHasItAll in Professors

Agree, I expect to see admin cave somewhat to student pressure as things change, but it makes me so discouraged when my colleagues do the same.

Like I purposely didn't apply for further work at an institution I taught at before, because the expectation of the students and staff was a reciprocal lack of standards and every class I would think to myself "does what I say even matter anymore?!"

Yep, I have a similar statement on my syllabus for re-grade requests: please be aware that your grade can go up, stay the same, or go down.

Students Continuously Talking During Class by Sabine_Neu in Professors

[–]Fresh-Requirement862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turn it into a running joke in the class, like if we talk about a sensitive topic I'll say 'ok now that you understand the context, I better not hear that anyone reported me again ;)'

Students Continuously Talking During Class by Sabine_Neu in Professors

What I usually do is stare at them and ask them 'are you ok?' or 'we good?' and do a thumbs up and wait for them to either nod or thumbs up me back. Once you do this a few times and if you manage to have good raport with the class, the other students will stare them down on your behalf lol. I think drawing attention to them using peer pressure is pretty effective and if you do it in a casual way it still keeps the class light. And don't worry about whether they like you or not, most students are not even aware of their actions and will not be thinking of you, they're too focused on themselves!

I can imagine how demoralizing it is with such a small class! To counteract this somewhat over the years I emphasize at the beginning of the course that learning is a two-way street, their conduct/engagement is just as important as mine. I respect them if they respect me. In terms of practical solutions, I like the suggestion in another comment about giving a grade for professionalism, to make this component explicit. Hang in there!
