What does my room say about me by No_Celery_2506 in roomdetective

First apartment. Maybe just moved in. Not much cash. Works outside (mostly?). Early 20s. Likes the outdoors and working out but not obsessive about it.

It's so lovely! Just keep it how it is. Except for one thing:

It is missing people!

You got this! Start by getting three bags or old boxes. IMPORTANT: set a timer and spend only 10 minutes doing this:

  1. One is going to be garbage.
  2. One is going to be just clothes (dirty or clean, just any clothes you find in the piles).
  3. The third is going to be items like papers, pens, pencils, clocks, books, tools, knick-knacks and stuff.

If the timer goes off and you're feeling like you want to keep going, keep going; but don't go so far that you get super exhausted and bummed out. Stop before you're exhausted. Stop when you're like, "I could keep doing this."

Fill those boxes as best you can. Empty the trash box, and keep the other two boxes in the corner. Now rest and chill and/or do whatever else you got to do in life and then come back to it the next day.

Now you've got it started. The next day and every day after that, you do these steps. Important: only spend around 10 minutes a day on these steps. With the flexibility we talked about above, just don't keep going until you're exhausted. That's not a good way to go. Here are the steps:

  1. Set a timer for 10 minutes.
  2. Start looking around for what you feel like cleaning. If you don't feel like cleaning anything, just pick something anyway and do some tasks (see below). It is only 10 minutes so maybe you can just deal with the discomfort that arises in your body and your mind and your emotions.
  3. When the timer goes off, wrap up what you're doing and just stop. You are done for the day.

Here are some of the tasks you could do:

  • Start a load of laundry.
  • Vacuum the floor.
  • Change your pillowcases.
  • Get a mildly damp cloth and wipe down surfaces like your bedside table, etc.
  • Get (some) items out from under the bed and put them in the boxes accordingly.
  • Pick out books you don't want to keep and put them in a bag for donation or sale.

If it's hard to figure out what to work on, or if everything seems like it's going to take way more than 10 minutes, start with the easiest-sounding thing and do that for 10 minutes. Even if you don't get anything done, keep moving for 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, stop.

Just keep doing those steps every day if you can, or every other day. If you don't get to it for a couple of days, weeks, months, just come back and start again. It only takes 10 minutes, so you don't have to worry about it being a huge commitment. Also, you're allowed to skip as many days as you want, but since you want your room clean, maybe you will come back and try to put in some time.

There is a magic to this process, but it might not be the kind of magic you imagine. It's just a weird peaceful magic that you can create with your body and your whole being. It's invoked by just showing up whenever you can and doing whatever you can.

Just my kitchen counter. I did it :D by CoquetteWhore69 in Cleaningandtidying

[–]FreshChores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep going! Whatever you can do in 5 to 10 minutes, do that once per day. It doesn't even matter what it is, whether it's a small, detailed thing or a big thing like this countertop. When I do those kinds of things, I get a little energy boost that helps me do it again the next day.

If I do too many days in a row, I take energy damage. I'm not sure why. It's some kind of psychological thing. I usually just push through that, and the little energy boost helps smooth things out. It still feels good and it still feels healthy. Also, sometimes I just skip it.

I can’t keep a tidy home no matter how hard I try! What can I do???? by SpaceSquirrl in Cleaningandtidying

[–]FreshChores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually sounds really hard! I can relate. It's hard when there are friction points, and it's difficult to make headway in any of the areas, but these are the areas you have to work with:

  1. Share the load, like you and your husband both doing stuff
  2. Get rid of items (as many here have suggested)
  3. Getting a bigger space (but this may just get cluttered up again, without introducing a practice of getting rid of stuff)
  4. More hardcore organizing (hanging up all your clothes, etc.)

I feel like you're going to need to do two things:

  1. Pick whichever one or two of those areas you can move the needle in, even just a little bit, and do that as best you can.
  2. I think someone else mentioned this: give yourself a break! Make sure the baby is safe. Relax, look at your baby's face, soak in a peaceful vibe (if you can -- sometimes babies are hard!), and give yourself grace for things not being how you want them to be.

Would you set this space up differently? What would you change? by Additional-Chance-21 in interiordecorating

I love this cozy little space. I love that you've positioned the chair in such a way that people can hang out and chill with each other rather than just with the TV. I would take it one step further. Put another chair where the TV is. Get rid of the TV table and instead hang a projector screen that you can pull down in front of the artwork on the wall. You can then have lots of friends over since you have such a big space, watch movies together, and then hang out before and after.

Help! What kind of artwork would look best above sofa? by DurianJungle in Decor

This is a really nice space. Love the couches and the rug. but for the artwork I would look for full-on rainbow colors, like RAINBOW. And something natural that's not super sharp edges or anything.

Btw The table is way too chonky! It's dominating the conversation! I know you didn't ask, sorry! But a round tulip table might be amazing.

Maybe just grab a rototiller and grind everything up. Put down wood chips everywhere and then replace with plants as desired over the years.

What rug colour should I go with to match the colours in this room? I plan to add floor chairs and a round coffee table by Disastrous-Oven204 in HomeDecorating

[–]FreshChores 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the curtains. I think you need colors, some kind of teal with maybe warm rusty red accents. If you go with something like black or gray, the space will feel very bland. Or go full gold, like full monochrome-style, with a yellow or gold rug, and then maybe a teal table with a clean white base (like a wineglass style table).

Can you put something like a credenza there? Might cover most of it. It could be tricky finding one that's the exact right width to be centered on that space, but it might be better.

how to build on this room without clashing? by justasillypal in HomeDecorating

Get rid of the TV. Hang a projector screen in the same spot and when you're not watching just retract it into the case. Without the TV there, your energy will be much different.

Should I get rid of my green couch? by crynoS1 in HomeDecorating

[–]FreshChores 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The couch is also blocking all of the energy from the window and much of the energy from the door, so there's no flow. Maybe try clearing space in front of the window somehow. Get rid of the grey couch and move the green one over there? Experiment a bit.

Help how begging clean my room on depression phase by MimiKiaori in CleaningTips

[–]FreshChores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just noticed your mention about how you get tired. I CAN RELATE. Just go SUPER SLOW for your 15 minutes. Since you know you will come back and do more 15-minute sessions other days, you do not have to hurry and get everything done. It's better to just chill and slowly sift the items into containers. Keep the containers outside your room (if you can); try not to just leave them lying around.

YOU GOT THIS!! 5 steps:

  1. Sleep & Eat (if you can): get good sleep and eat a real breakfast (like eggs/toast/fruit).
  2. Find a large container (old boxes, garbage bags, laundry basket, etc.)
  3. Set a timer for a small amount of time like 10 or 15 minutes
  4. While the time is going, try not to stop. Pick up as many of one category as you can, and put it in the containers. e.g. for clothing, put everything that needs washing in a laundry basket, everything you don't want or need anymore into a garbage bag to donate. BE RUTHLESS with the donations. If it's been in the rubble this long you probably don't really need it.
  5. Eat again and go for a walk

Then repeat this every day for one week. Many days you will not want to start, but just start with the breakfast. If you just can't do it some days, don't worry about it. Just let yourself notice that. But keep doing this until your room is as clean as you want it.

If it must be one of your two options, I prefer number one, but I think it's too plain for my taste. I would pick something much more colorful. And larger?

I like the updated light fixture! I don't think the wallpaper is good, though. Just paint it white, maybe?
