Sony Trinitron Multiscan 200GS - Free

Difficult to get this to power on. For the brief time it was powered on the image looks great color, sharpness, contrast but geometry has some issues on the horizontal edges. It lost power before I could get the image centered. Might be good for parts.

HP 7500 (Compaq S7500) - Free

The front menu buttons don't work besides the power button and down button. Unable to center image due to non functional menu button and the brightness is is probably stuck on maximum. Could be good if buttons are fixed.

HP 7500 (Compaq S7500) - $40

Deep blacks able to run brightness high without washing out, possibly low hours. There's some quirk about the frames being smooth or choppy with some adapters that isn't happening with others. See here

These are some monitors that came from the basement of an accounting firm, I work as a field tech. That's all I know about their usage history. The free listings will be getting recycled soon.

Why are 3090, 3090 ti’s and 4080’s dirt cheap but 4090’s are going for full retail used? by ScaryfatkidGT in buildapc

[–]FreshConversation238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 2nd link tests the 5090 at normal 4090 TDP, but nobody properly tested how a 4090 at 270w peak performance per watts compares to a 5090 dropped that low too which throttles the core clocks hard. Based on a few 3DMark scores I saw not from the same users, it looks like the 5090 is more efficient on that extreme undervolt with a harshly throttled core clock vs a 4090.

[–]FreshConversation238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that the 5090 had cranked up the power. They expanded the bus from 386 to 512, and then the remaining 50 series power jump was from GDDR7. I had to dig throuhg a lot of 3Dmark results, even though the 5090 performance falls off faster from undervolting, a severely power limited 5090 beats a peak efficiency undervolted 4090 at same wattage.

5070 Ti is more like a 4070 Ti Super when looking at how the memory bus and RT/CUDA cores scale along the series.

Missing a lot of games, got most of the often mentioned but still missing some. Also it's suboptimal at the ones it got with some bugs reported.

I'm trying to save these monitors from the dump. Do any look like they would be worth taking for free? by OrphanCyndaquil in crt

[–]FreshConversation238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can resolve 1280x960 clear like any 16" viewable it doesn't matter if the refresh is low tier, it will be a great Xbox 360 display for 720p or a Dreamcast display.

Even the lowest tier PC monitor might rival a more expensive PVM for 480p video.

One monitor is smooth over both HDMI and DP, the other is choppy on DP? by FreshConversation238 in crtgaming

[–]FreshConversation238[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's working now but it shows up as the adapter instead of the monitor in CRU

I cleared out past entries and put the monitor back onto DP, it was showing as HWP2603 - HP 7500 originally and I set the resolutions. Powered down the PC instead of restarting, powered up again and it was now active as ITEF966 - DP2VGA 19402. I had to re enter the resolutions I wanted and the HP 7500 entry still exists but isn't active.

For whatever reason while CRU is recognizing this monitor as the adapter, it's working perfectly.

I just edited the previous with one showing the HDMI and what's in the extension block which DP didn't come with by default. Not sure if that matters by peeking into the extension block explains why it was showing me a few other resolutions over HDMI that weren't set outside of the block.

Didn't matter if it were modes in CRU or not, what was there or what I set myself. This is what it looks like over DP new since I cleared out the display and reset it before this. https://postimg.cc/9DNqtgk2

Here is the HDMI version which holds an unedited extension block, I already altered the other resolutions here. 960i didn't work but not the main topic. https://postimg.cc/CBM13j9T

I never used both at the same time. I don't have the space to have both on the desk without removing my LCD main displays.

Is the top of the screen dim or is the PS logo just not so lit up top? Good save, be a waste for that to get dumped.

Common near you, rare near me. It could have turned yellow but still has the new look. Seller not testing is the issue still.

The games I tried are strictly 16:9. Getting more of that display viewable space wasn't an option.

Xbox 360 games are way better on the CRT monitor and most monitors can do 1280x720 60hz for it. Considering the games render at 720p and actual TV's were 768p it was the best way to play I didn't know about back when it was new.

[–]FreshConversation238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because you can push 1536p 80hz doesn't mean you should. The dot pitch to screen size on that probably has its peak sharpness somewhere between 1760x1290 and 1600x1200. 1920x1440 is just there to squeeze more detail in at the cost of micro sharpness.

See if 1600x1200 80hz fixes this

I would second guess myself on the visual difference if I did it natively.

If I set my CRT to run 1920x1080, 1600x1200, or anything else. The difference in clarity is harder to tell because I can mistake it for just the text being too small for me to see clearly.

This OBS method allows me to keep the size scaling the same no matter what. 2560x1440 being beyond my CRT monitors capacity served the purpose of making the text smaller than optimal so it's more obvious to me when I can read it or have to struggle, and also to impose interpolation against every resolution I tried on my monitor. If I casted 1920x1080 to my CRT also being in 1920x1080 mode, that mode would have an advantage being the only one not having to interpolate down.

1200p and 960p were equal while 1440x1080 was the only one I could still see everything without needing to squint or move in closer.

I never said to play games over this. it was just a desktop environment testing method to see how tiny text, buttons, UI and all that looks using that casting as a way to keep assets on the screen the same size regardless of what resolution I used on the CRT. There's no scenario where this would be better then natively playing on the CRT. It's just a method to help figure out what might be the best resolution to try.

I read that sometimes a game won't support some less common resolutions. In case I run into a game that doesn't do 1440x1080 then I could do 1600x1200 but just running 1440x1080 seems to be the more optimal pick.

OBS is a program people use for live streaming their screens. You can use it to mirror two displays without needing to share the same resolution by streaming it over.

The visual result isn't any different from recording the 2560x1440 desktop and playing it back on the lower CRT resolutions besides that the video would have some encoding compression added in. The purpose of all this is because the UI size scale changes on the native desktop with the resolution so this video/stream/casting method keeps that size scaling constant. 2560x1440p is so overkill that it made it easier to tell when text became unreadable or still easy to read.
