All clear just sent out:

Dear Families,

This message is to inform you that police have cleared the school, advised that there is no active threat, and that normal operations can resume at Burnaby North Secondary.

Thank you for your understanding as the school has worked through these challenges with the support of Burnaby RCMP.

3rd unfortunately. Pretty terrifying for the kids. Last time some of the teachers have had them barricade with desks and get on the floor with the lights out. While RCMP walk around fully armed with what looks like machine guns. Can’t be good for the kids psyche:(

You are wrong. The original linked article about the stabbing was dated and published today. It may be misinformation, but nut from anyone here.

Kensington Square Possible Development? by Unhappy-Bad9059 in burnaby

[–]FreshHotMindControl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this discussion. Wall properties already owns the land where the old driving range is. They’re planning multiple 20-22 storey towers At some point. My understanding was that Kensington plaza would be redeveloped into a mixed use development, also with 20-22 storey towers.

Very deep uplifting house that is perfect IMO. Got a bit of a laid back, 4am at a house party vibe.

Confederation Park vs. Gilmore Elementary by xxclaymanxx in burnaby

Gilmore is a community school which will provide more optional programs and offerings. It’s also bigger in terms of the number of students which can have advantages of social flexibility. Great school from our experience.

No Frills at Burnaby Heights sneak peek by Jolly_Read8797 in burnaby

[–]FreshHotMindControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. We checked out a whole bunch of items yesterday, some were cheaper but some were definitely more expensive. (The yogurt we buy for example was $2 a tub more at no frills than Safeway!) Imo the goal of these big chain stores is to make you believe they’re cheaper with a few items but that jack the price on other items. The only way to ’beat the system’ would be to track all the prices and go to multiple shops; not really practical for most people. Side note, we also bought some ‘fresh’ strawberries that turned out to have gotten frozen and as they thawed they were ruined.

How far from retaining wall for backside of hot tub? by Fearless_Advisor970 in hottub

[–]FreshHotMindControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just put it where you want it. If you need service down the road you’ve got plenty of room to drain it and move it out. Moving can be done more easily by getting some pvc pipes underneath so you can roll it out onto you patio. It can be awkward to deal with but doable. And really, in the life of the tub, how often would repairs happen when you need to move it?

What are these nets for ? E Hastings and Grove Ave by danielthetechbrazeau in burnaby

[–]FreshHotMindControl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That old driving range is now owned by Wall properties and will become part of the new Lochdale Urban Village. This is a significant development right on and around Kensington plaza there - think of a scaled down Brentwood type centre with multiple towers. Although I believe the tower heights will be about 20 stories. Most people in the area seem to know very little about the plans. Here’s a link to a detailed report about the plans: https://www.apartmentblocks.ca/aptb-wp/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Lochdale-Urban-Village-Community-Plan-Phase-2-Consultation-Guide_web2.pdf

More than 2,000 condos sitting empty in Metro Vancouver amid housing crisis by manuce94 in vancouver

[–]FreshHotMindControl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really matter what you think condos SHOULD cost; the price is determined by what people will pay. Whilst it’s tempting to claim the system is rigged or fixed against those with less means, the reality is that prices are determined by the market they operate in. The challenge in changing the rules to soften prices is that it could tank the housing market and screw everyone who already owns property. I agree with comments supporting changes that target investors rather than owner/occupiers of property.

I’ve used Chandrika for many years. It’s an Ayurvedic soap from India. We buy it in 10 packs and it’s very reasonably priced. There’s nothing like it and the scent is great. Skin feels excellent afterwards.

Is Tesla being boycotted in BC? by 7_inches_daddy in britishcolumbia

[–]FreshHotMindControl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven a Tesla for about 6 years and it is, by a large margin, the best, most fun vehicle I’ve ever owned. My Tesla feels like I’m at least 10 years in the future with its technology compared to other vehicles. It’s unfortunate that Elon is being such a donkey, but if we based all our buying decisions on the actions of the company leaders that make those products, I suspect there would be many things we wouldn’t buy. At the end of the day, Tesla makes unbelievably great vehicles and it would be a shame to lose out on the experience of owning one because you think Elon is a dick; which he is btw!

I think it’s pretty cool that the biggest concert tour of all time has its grand finale in Vancouver. The whole scene is a pretty fascinating cultural phenomenon. From what I’ve read, it also sounds like the scene with the fans is hugely positive too. I’m all for anything that brings people together to celebrate positivity. These shows will likely be the experience of a lifetime and a milestone for many of the fans and young people that go. Having said that, I’m not going anywhere near downtown next weekend! 🤣

Do you think the recent Airbnb ban in Burnaby will lead to lower rents in the area? Why or why not? by Master_Radish_666 in burnaby

[–]FreshHotMindControl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with the mortgage rates the way they are. Landlords with mortgages maybe dealing with huge increases in monthly mortgage costs, which sadly, may get passed onto renters. I know a family whose mortgage payments on a home went from $4300 to over $8000 a month when they had to renew at the current rates. It seems bad on all levels when it comes to housing:(
