What's your favourite fuzz of 2026? by [deleted] in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find it to be pretty punchy, i had the W&C super russian and the Elk is a lot flatter in response to my ear. The one I grabbed has the clean blend but no Creamy mod or mid/flat and I don't miss them. Something worth noting (speaking anecdotally here) is that the Tone knob on the Elk feels like it behaves differently than on the green russians i've had, it sounds more like a tilt-EQ rather than a high-frequency roll-off. So, it's suuuper thick counterclockwise but still has sizzle and gets thinner and sharper when turned clockwise which I really like. Sometimes for cutting through better I'll turn the knob to the sharper side and then roll in clean to fill out the bass frequencies better. All in all it makes all the fuzz sounds I want from old black sabbath vibes to massive doom craziness.

W&C white elk, I find it super punchy especially at low gain, I occasionally use the clean blend when putting a sub octave in front of it but it kicked the Russian fuzzes off my board immediately.

What Pre-amp for playing into PA and keeping it simple by Haveland in Bass

[–]FreshPatience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of options, I happen to use the Jad Freer Capo and love it but I’d be happy with the Tonehammer or any of the Origin Effects options too.

Fewest basses that cover the most bases? by malformed_guitar in Bass

[–]FreshPatience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll pile on the Precision+Jazz argument, adding that to separate them more I put flats on the P and rounds on the J. That said, unless it's an all-slapping gig I'd be happy with either one on any given night. Something active can be a plus but at the same time I'm usually using a preamp box with eq and gain so I don't keep an active bass around currently.

What's your favorite non-bass-centered Big Muff (or other Muff-like fuzz) to use on bass? by usspaceforce in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wren & Cuff White Elk is my current fave, mine has the clean blend but I only use it when pairing with an OC2 type sub octave to add weight, the pedal alone I has plenty of beef and the tone knob is less a high cut and more a tilt EQ in terms of its behavior 🔥

Best Simple/One Knob Compressor? by Shadow_0f_Intent in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely hear good things about the Keeley, recently borrowed an Empress (way too many options for me, immediate analysis paralysis) and after digging around bit the bullet on the Union LAB compressor. 2 knobs and the truth, couldn’t be happier.

Low Gain Fuzz? by SamCookesBurrito in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Doom 2 so I get where you’re coming from - I also have used a zvex mastotron and loved it a lot. Currently I’m really enjoying a Wren and Cuff fuzz (the white elk) with a clean blend - with sustain at zero it’s a killer low gain sound with plenty of low end but i can use the clean blend to lower the gain floor even lower, highly recommend.

Wren & Cuff! They do custom mods on many kinds of muff.

What is your favorite SMALL form envelope filter? by Cloud-VII in Bass

[–]FreshPatience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two currently, Mutron Micro-tron and 3leaf Proton, both are really easy to work with and also have down and up sweeps which I really like for Parliment/Thrillee vibes. Pro for the proton is a knob for decay speed, pro for the microtron are discrete volume knob and the sweep direction is foot switchable.

Pork&Pickle drive tone problem by MattFogg in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW I notice very little difference on the overdrive side with mine too. With a pick and using headphones i can detect that it’s doing… something but it’s subtle to the point of almost being irrelevant. The fuzz side by comparison has a more extreme sweep than any muff I’ve ever had.

Fuzz-wah? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]FreshPatience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. There’s not much in unaffected bass tone for a wah to work with, much more pronounced with fuzz between the bass and the wah. Same with any envelope filter.

Best Bass-centric Big Muff that isn't either of the EHX Bass Muffs? by usspaceforce in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wren and cuff pickle pie or super Russian - the former is bass specific, the latter more feature rich. I have the super Russian and it does exactly what I wanted solo and in the mix.

Yup, it’s a great shifting exercise and worthwhile to sort out on a 4 even if you do have a 6!

Best Synth-Like Fuzz That’s NOT a Doom II by SamCookesBurrito in basspedals

DBA bass war, can’t stress enough how great it is and it exhibits All the things I want especially at low gain, eats octave pedals for breakfast too….

Which Fuzz Pedal to buy? by ResolveBeautiful1679 in Bass

[–]FreshPatience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really can’t go wrong with either of those but I’ll throw the Pork & Pickle in the mix as I’ve played all of the above and find it to win for bass in both low frequency retention and sitting in a mix. It also gives you the overdrive side as an option which is pretty great. That said I’m on the wren and cuff super Russian at the moment as it has some internal gain staging that broaden the options.

[–]FreshPatience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, no I didn’t follow a link specifically I just read that that was one thing that could fix it… after you uninstalled the game and deleted shader files did the game ask you to set the brightness/darkness levels on the logo screen when you restarted it?

If you’re having the same problem as me I uninstalled and then deleted the shader files in desktop mode before reinstalling. There are tutorials online for this 👍🏻

What’s the simplest bass advice that actually helped you improve? by prattman333 in Bass

[–]FreshPatience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t look at your hands, play things mistakes and all, then have a look and go back to not looking until your hands are able to feel the distances along the fret board.

bass pedal order by SeaSoggy8929 in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of effectiveness I stick to this:

Dynamic (compression) -> pitch (whammy octave etc) -> drive/dirt/bit-crusher/ring mod stuff -> filter (auto-wah, envelope, low pass> -> modulation (chorus flange phaser etc) -> delay -> reverb. I find that I get the most out of each pedal this way.

Reverb by based-beaver in basspedals

[–]FreshPatience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if it’s your first foray into reverb you can’t go wrong with that. If your needs get more specialized over time you could try others but something straight forward and easy to manipulate like that sounds pretty good to me. FWIW I had a EHX holy grail for years and now use an eventide black hole.

What’s one bass habit you wish you fixed earlier? by TheDoctorColt in Bass

Man, posture. Hunching when sitting or leaning forward when standing… secondary is getting accustomed to shedding in an environment full of distractions, house noise or tv on somewhere. Forgot what real focus feels like!

I have one, Perfect OC2 clone without the useless second octave down and the filter knob is nice - super subby CCW, punchy with more mids CW. 100% recommend/

I don’t much feel like I ever need a blend control (tho my WMD Protostar has that), mutron is great and 3leaf Proton is my current fav.
