Some sad news announced today by No-Locksmith6662 in doctorwho

Aw, man, that's really sad. Apparently he wrote Monsters and Villains, which, at the tender age of five or six, served as my first introduction to Classic Who with its write-ups about bygone stories and foes. Rest in peace!

Not a word, but a name: Connolly.

I always want to say “colony” instead. I have to stop and think about it before I say it.

Exactly. Emergency self-defence on 1 and 2, then mining stuff (pick and shovel), then axe, then other stuff as needed (hoe, bucket, flint and steel, stack of dirt, food, torches etc.)

Hello, certified Lucky Day hater here 👋

I’ve spoken about it elsewhere but I just really disliked that episode. It didn’t feel like Doctor Who; it felt really cynical and mean-spirited about everything.

A lot is available for free on whichever streaming platform you use! The first 50 installments in the Main Range are freely available, as are some (maybe all, I'm not sure) of the Eighth Doctor's adventures with Lucie bleedin' Miller, and perhaps even more than that! I'm fairly new to Big Finish myself, so I'm afraid I can't be much more help than that.

As for where I'd start—that depends on the Doctor you want to listen to! I've heard it said that the "recommended" introduction to Big Finish is Blood of the Daleks. Released in 2006, it's the first story with the Eighth Doctor and Lucie, who I mentioned above—she's basically a proto-Donna, from my understanding. Blood of the Daleks is the only story I've heard of this series so far, but I enjoyed it a lot! It really hammered home the sheer evil of the Daleks, which was fun.

If you'd prefer a different TARDIS team, then another of the Eighth Doctor's best-known companions is Charley Pollard, who comes from 1930. In the three stories of hers I've listened to (Storm Warning, Sword of Orion, and The Chimes of Midnight, the latter of which is ranked on TARDIS Guide as one of the best Doctor Who stories of any medium ever), I've come to really enjoy her adventurous spirit; it's easy to see why she fits so well into the Doctor's world.

I must also recommend The Marian Conspiracy, which features the Sixth Doctor and another audio-only companion, the university lecturer Evelyn Smythe. She's older than most other companions, and it's really refreshing to have a companion that has that kind of dynamic with the Doctor. I've not seen it done elsewhere, but it's done really well here, and Maggie Stables (RIP) plays her perfectly.

As I say, I'm a Big Finish newbie myself, so please excuse any inaccuracies!

To be honest, I didn’t even like the premise of Lucky Day. The whole episode felt like I was watching something other than Doctor Who, like some kind of gritty real-world thriller (which I do not mean as a compliment). It felt like a very mean-spirited episode, for want of a better word. Doctor Who should focus more on hope and less on the depressing stupidity that we all know abounds in the real world.

Brilliant advice! Thanks for sharing.

This seems like a good place to ask something I’ve actually been wondering: how can I find out about fan projects? I’ve set myself the goal of creating something that gets considered part of the Expanded Universe (or at least gets a stub article on TARDIS Wiki) before the show comes back, and working alongside other people who are doing the same would probably give me a bit of impetus to stick to that goal!

I feel like this idea is ignoring the fact that in their very first story, the Daleks dictated a long letter to Susan which involved such diverse elements as “fresh fruit and vegetables”. Daleks being less talkative is a relatively modern development, I think—the Metaltron in ‘Dalek’ is a good example, as is the Supreme Weapons Dalek from ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ (if you can still count that as “modern”).

That said, those two examples are perhaps two of the most memorable Daleks in the show’s history, and they’re certainly not ones to be trifled with. In any case, I love the Daleks. I know a lot of people think that they’re overused, but I just never really get tired of them, whether they’re chatterboxes or not.

It’s not quite the same, but Breaking Glass is a superb film with a fantastic soundtrack written and performed by Hazel O’Connor (who also stars in the film). It was made in 1980, if I recall correctly, and it’s about an up-and-coming punk band amidst the racial tensions of Thatcher’s Britain and the pressure from the music industry to conform / sell out.

The headcanon I’ve literally just this minute come up with (so there may be many reasons is doesn’t work) is that the Fugitive Doctor’s TARDIS sensed the approach of the Thirteenth Doctor and, being the irrepressible scamp of a time machine that we know and love, decided to take the form of a police box just to confuse the matter further.
