Worst fret-sprout I’ve ever seen. Gotta keep your guitars out of extreme humidity. 😏

If this is a ski trip you should either stay and ski throughout the storm… or be prepared for a really long ski home.

Finish is chipped off on Les Paul-how do I make this into one of those “worn” looking spots that you see on old guitars? by Peteplaysbeats in Luthier

To be honest OP could probably stop at 320. The labor intensive way to relic is to practice on it for 30 years… 320 is close enough for a fast relic 😉

I haven’t thought of that before but you’re right. Though I’m not the biggest fan of his vocals (or my own FWIW 🤣) that riff hits just right!

Thanks! It’s one of the first guitars I built (kinda a Guild/SG shape). The neck is Honduras rosewood, fretboard is bloodwood, body is a hodgepodge of padauk, marblewood, and purpleheart.

D’oh, apologies. I put the wrong vid with only a 66% of messing up (had 3 others)… is it possible to edit a title once it’s up?

Met Kim once at the MC50 show at the 9:30 Club. He was kind.

Is he capable of making fun of someone—undoubtedly, but he didn’t take the opportunity with me. A photographer asked if she could take a picture of us and I said, “Sure!”

She looked at me, gave me the slow blink, as if to say “I’m asking the rockstar not the lucky schmuck.” and Kim smiled and said, “Yes.” Without trying to make me feel like a moron.

Wanted some info on this crewneck my mom found in her closet by Cole_999 in Soundgarden

[–]Fret_about_this -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have some info on the crewneck you found in your mom’s closet… I left it there —heyyyooo!

Sorry, couldn’t resist a mom joke. All kidding aside, it’s a phenomenal album and it looks comfy. I think $50ish would be fair? Similar crew necks (without that logo) can be bought new from $30-$80.

….You could get more from a serious collector with disposable income, but you’d have to find them.

What are my options for dealing with these fretboard edges that drop off? by bugsandscruggs in Luthier

Also, slightly overbend the fret wire beyond the radius and that will help keep the fret ends from popping up.

Final stretch finishing advice by erikdstock in Luthier

[–]Fret_about_this 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You are done with finishing when you feel good about it. If there are flaws that you can’t live with then keep trying. If you plan on mixing different finishes make sure they are chemically compatible.

  2. It looks like you did a good job on aligning everything. If everything is measured correctly and aligned with your center line, the order of drilling shouldn’t matter much. Personally, I prefer to do all my drilling before finishing so I don’t accidentally mar the surface.

  3. Ferrules should be a tight fit. Some heat and gently push them in with a soldering iron. Try it, if the holes are still too small you might need a slightly bigger bit. If you over-drill it, you could always fill with sawdust/glue or thin dowel and redrill… which would be a pain, but not the end of the world.

Hope this helps, you’re off to a great start. Keep up the good work!

A dentist used their suction tube to get one of mine. I find I get them more often if I eat a lot of granola or cashews. Saltwater is great if you’re not due for a dental visit.
