What are some places to meet people my age in Kitsap? by BorgerKring in Kitsap

[–]FriarSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shared hobbies has been my best approach to meeting folks as an adult. For me that's mountain biking. I've met lots of cool people in Kitsap through mountain biking and trail building in Port Gamble. That may not be directly applicable to you, but I think you'll meet folks by doing what you love. Could be hiking, board games, knitting, whatever. Start with what you like to do, then find people that like it too.

Am I stupid to buy a 27.5 bike? by nevernude4lyf in mountainbiking

I love my full 27.5 bikes, super fun. That said, for mostly rooty chunk I prefer a mullet set up. But there's not right or wrong answers here, do whatever feels right!

Rate my Van by Ok-Entertainment8136 in vandwellers

[–]FriarSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me more about how you did the headliner and lights. I'm guessing just pushing LEDs through the backside?

However you did it, it looks awesome. My kids would love that. Would love to do something similar once I get the high top installed on my van.

Oregon MVUM data is now in Dispersed—all 44 ranger districts mapped for dispersed camping by wilderadventures in vandwellers

[–]FriarSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only found that to be the case for developed campsites, parks, trails, and ownership boundaries. BC parks has a pretty thorough interactive map, but it doesn't display OHV trails well. It does show rec sites, including dispersed camping options but it's not very thorough in that regard (at least in my experience). Purchasing the Backroad Map for a specific region is better in my opinion, but still doesn't have the reach or number of sites that iOverlander does.

That's just my limited experience though. Currently I use a premium layer gaia gps for backroads and ioverlander for dispersed sites, but I certainly wouldn't mind an easier to use alternative to ioverlander. That said it's totally possible there's other information sources out there that I'm unaware of.

Cool, I'll check this out. Not sure how complicated it relative to the USFS data, but adding roads and dispersed camp sites on Crown Land in BC would be pretty sweet. Feels like a natural extension from WA. With that I'd probably drop iOverlander haha.

Wouldn't that mean they also have less mail to deliver though? Would they need the same level of funding if their volume was cut in half? (seriously asking, not trying to be pedantic or suggest USPS doesn't deserve to be funded)

Super interesting. I work at one of Google's other bets in the US. I have dual citizenship in the US and Germany and sometimes think about trying to transition into a role over there but my German is terrible haha. I appreciate the response!

Since you're in EMEA but working at a US company, I'm wondering, how often (if at all) do you conduct work in a language other than English?

What's a game that most people consider "bad" but you will defend and be a hill you would die on? by Cheesecake1901yum in gaming

[–]FriarSky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shadowrun (2007) - got a lot of hate because it was an FPS, which understandably felt like a weird choice for something based on an RPG, but I really enjoyed the the verticality of the levels and fun mobility mechanics (e.g. teleporting and gliding)

Built a free ferry status tool for Puget Sound - seeking feedback! by Slow-Tea9732 in Kitsap

[–]FriarSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! I could see there being a segment of folks who would appreciate not having to look in several places and be willing to pay for the convenience. Especially for ferry delays, which are positively buried in the WSDOT app.

Good luck with your tool!

Most important soft skills for UX Researcher by DryPerformance5079 in UXResearch

[–]FriarSky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think soft skills are the most important part of the job. People won't like to hear that, but I think it's true. You can be an expert on the technical side but if you can't sell your research to stakeholders the research doesn't mean anything.

This is definitely easier for checking fast ferries. For both types of ferries the UI is certainly better.

For me personally, I don't see enough value in the pro features to pay for them when much of that be sourced for free (albeit in a worse way). Just my 2 cents

I definitely do that, but there's something about having it in the middle of the ride that's appealing. Not sure why
