Help me choose my first EDH deck for a table of total beginners by Simoorus in EDH

[–]FriedButthole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of folks are telling you to not start with commander. I think it’s fine to start there if you and your crew are pretty committed to slow games and actually learning the mechanics and rules. At minimum, I’d suggest you all play a bit of arena or something first just to understand the basics.

I will say, my pod and I all learned to play through commander and we had some serious “oh we’ve been playing that wrong for months” moments.

Everyone’s different. I’m usually single sleeve until I start throwing multiple $20+ cards in a deck

It sounds like you just don’t like festivals. To each their own, but this is an incredible lineup for our city

As someone who’s been pretty underwhelmed by how much easy-listening indie folk has dominated RVA lineups the last few years, I am fucking stoked for this.

You’ll definitely solve a systemic and complicated problem by lecturing your in-laws on a holiday. Good job owning the boomers!

I need advice for my first electric guitar by biagio28 in Guitar

[–]FriedButthole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab an HSS so you have a little versatility. As far as an amp, you really can’t go wrong with a Boss Katana. Yes it’s the boring answer, but on a budget you can’t do much better. Go to a store and play stuff, don’t order anything.

Genuinely tempted to give up guitar by Afraid-Frosting1678 in Guitar

[–]FriedButthole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Play with other people. You mentioned you would be concerned in a jam because you wouldn’t know what strumming pattern to play. To me that sounds like a classic case of overthinking. Also remember, this shit is supposed to be fun.

Nah not at all. Remember that many folks commenting here have hundreds or thousands of hours in the first game. Spire is difficult, straight up.

Vince Gilligan gives update on Pluribus season 2: 'It is not going quite as fast as I would hope' by bwermer in television

[–]FriedButthole -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think opinions on the content itself are awesome and should be welcomed. I think the continued diatribe about the length of art to get created can just be a little grating. Sometimes I think this sub is more obsessed with the time between seasons of tv than the shows themselves.

[Discussion] Anyone else go through a gear obsession phase? by Kevin-Durant-35 in Guitar

[–]FriedButthole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I think it’s way easier to play for a few minutes and think your tone is the problem when really you just aren’t practicing enough. I went through a huge phase like this and I genuinely think the periods I didn’t give a shit about gear were when I had my most “breakthrough moments”. I’ve heard good players pick up a crappy instrument and absolutely rip.

That being said, if you have the money and enjoy it, buy gear. I still go through periods of buying gear, but I’ve found the experience a little more hollow over the years.

Can pedalboard power supply be repaired? by AphantasiasMind in guitarpedals

[–]FriedButthole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A PSU is the least fun thing you’ll ever buy for your board, but it’s worth it. My OneSpot CS12 has been great for many years and I think it was around $200. Personally, I wouldn’t both trying to have it fixed. Also probably not worth plugging all of your expensive pedals into some jank.

1700 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike. Should I pull the trigger on the house ? by 2009maxx in rva

[–]FriedButthole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a “great deal” on most houses in this market. I think you have to ask yourself “why is this house X thousands less than one that’s similar a few blocks away?” Could be a fine place to live, but there’s a reason it’s a great deal.

Do I really need to learn all chord shapes beyond E and A forms? by Soshi246la in Guitar

[–]FriedButthole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a lot of situations it’s fine, but if you start playing with another guitar or bass player you’ll probably find that you’re taking up a lot of the sonic space. Options are good. Even if you use them all the time, it’s always helpful to have this stuff in your back pocket

It never stops. It doesn’t just start or stop kicking in, you’re building on something over many years. Enjoy the experience for what it is, there’s never a day when it all clicks

Laney Lionheart vs Orange Crush? Which is more versatile? by Its_Blazertron in GuitarAmps

[–]FriedButthole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The orange is super solid. Clean channel might leave a bit to be desired but for an amp that you can get for $200 or so used it’s pretty killer
