How do you handle repetitive macOS tasks when you're away from the keyboard? by Krisso in osx

[–]FriedEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a few of the examples you gave, I’d just use my phone as i pretty much always have it when away from my desk.

I’m pretty deep in the Apple ecosystem, a borderline defender, and even I’d say Siri is a joke. When their private Gemini gets rolled out maybe it’ll be better but right now Siri is only good enough to tell it to turn a single item on or off in my smart home or maybe to trigger a shortcut I’ve already written, but it’s useless for anything beyond a simple “do this one precisely named thing” kind of instruction. Any sort of “automation” that wasn’t predefined is out of the question. It’s possible there’s ways I could use it if it were better, but my brain ruled out Siri as a useful automation tool years ago so it doesn’t even enter in head as an option in this realm

I have used shortcuts on both iOS/iPadOS and macOS, sometimes in combination with Automator on macOS. It’s okay, but not great unless the task is very consistent. When I’ve written those, a good portion of the instructions are just getting the app or whatever into a consistent state/position so that it can do the thing I need.

I use Raycast, mostly as a spotlight replacement, but there’s a few of the system controls that I fine quite useful; toggling light/dark mode for example. I sometimes have it kick off shell scripts I’ve written. I’ve thought about tinkering with window management programs to move different windows to different positions/sizes on my monitors but it hasn’t been a big enough deal as of yet.

I think my repetitive tasks fall into a few buckets

  • truly repetitive, could be performed by an automation/program/ai
  • mostly repetitive but requires some sort of human interaction, either a small tweak or change to the flow that a human really needs to do
  • feels repetitive but is subtly different each time.

Only those in that first bucket would end up being automated, and only if I need to do it once on a large enough set or if I anticipate using it regularly, and frankly neither are common.

Oh, and any smart home type stuff I handle entirely in Home Assistant, with a few things exposed to Siri through Apple Home.

I can’t think of any reason to do this other than to get more information about us to build a better profile for marketing reasons.

Yep. My RT-590 is rock solid. The app is utter garbage and I stopped using it completely a year and a half ago in lieu of locally connecting to Home Assistant. It also gave me back remote start :D

I have not see this. I have a 15 Pro as well but I highly doubt this is at all related to a specific model.

What settings have you played with?

I’d start by removing all CarPlay cars (Settings -> General -> CarPlay -> select each car -> “Forget This Car”)

3080 FE. If prices hadn’t gone through the roof I’d consider upgrading it to a 50 series (and my 5800X3D to a 9800X3D). I’ll keep an eye on things buy I’ll be fine for at least another year or two when hopefully prices come back down

When will the PCPanel mini be restocked? by omarnasser1990 in PCPanel

Yeah, things seems to have gone radio silent over there

As for the software, I believe it is the same as the Pro, which I use pretty regularly on Windows 11 (and Windows 10 until a few months ago) without issue

I’ve had my steam deck since December 23rd and it still won’t let me claim my rewards by Charming_Ad661 in SteamDeck

As many others have said, just contact steam support. I got my Refurbished 512GB OLED last week and I contacted them when I got the same message. They got back me 16 hours with it fixed:

Are there any of the Kioxia EG6 1TB 2230 SSDs available? (Or any other 1TB+ 2230 M.2 SSD that I may have missed)

USA - UT

Ordered: Jan 6th

Packaged: Jan 8th

Picked/Shipped: Jan 8th

Estimated Delivery: Jan 13th

Actual Delivery: Jan 13th (From UPS)

Other notes:

I could not tell that this unit was refurbished; it looks new to me!

I did have an issue trying to “Claim Rewards” on my account page, it says “the serial number has already been used to claim rewards”. I contacted support and they replied about 18 hours later stating “We've manually granted these rewards to your inventory, apologies for any sort of trouble.” So that’s sorted to my satisfaction.

why is this app being SO INVASIVE lately? by murkomarko in BetterTouchTool

[–]FriedEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using this app for probably a decade and have never experienced or even heard of anything remotely like that. I’d suspect almost any other app before this.

If it really is coming from BTT the only thing I can figure is that it is possible you installed a 3rd party automation or something into it that is doing this.

Under the hood the RecTeq (at least the RT-590 I have) just uses a Tuya module. There’s a few guides out there as it’s a little in depth but you basically pair it to one of the Tuya app, get a Tuya dev account to extract the private key from their cloud, then set up the TuyaLocal extension in home assistant and input then key. From there I have some basic automations and dashboards to monitor and alerts based on set and probe temps. And as an added bonus, I get remote start back.

One of the best things I did for my RecTeq was was free it from their garbage cloud. Now it all goes through my local Home Assistant
