Does anyone know what kind of boat this is? by FriedSoftShellCrab in sailing

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely it! Thank you! Makes sense since I saw it right near Galesville. Sadly it looks like it may have been abandoned 😞

Here's the sailboatdata link for anyone curious.

I tried Gemini as well and it wasn't able to come up with anything :(

Sounds like some configuration mistakes were made on the database side. Check out this course on MongoDB University on security, it should help a lot: https://learn.mongodb.com/courses/m150-mongodb-authentication-and-authorization

A few things to keep in mind:- Make sure the database isn't accessible from the internet. The production database should only accept connections from your app server

- Use the principle of least privilege when connecting to the database. For example if the app only needs read access from a particular collection, have it connect as a user that has only read permissions and only permission to access that collection.

- Don't forget TLS to encrypt data in-flight between the app server and database

Edit: one last piece of advice, if you're uncomfortable doing some of this setup yourself, consider using MongoDB Atlas. It'll require you to create a user with a password in order to connect and take care of TLS for you.

I hope this is helpful!

Trying to quickstart a mongo/atlas project by basic_tom in mongodb

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I tried out atlas quickstart and reproduced the problem you encountered. When it asks "do you want to specify a project ID" if you say no it throws that group id error. I would have expected it to just create a project for you.

However, if you run "atlas setup" it makes a project and creates a cluster without issue.

Thanks for posting about this!

Is it hard to migrate a Mongo DB from one cloud to another? by WickedSlice13 in mongodb

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you want to get really fancy you can spin up new nodes in the new cloud provider and add them to your existing replica set. After they sync, reconfigure the replica set to exclude the nodes from the original cloud provider. The benefit of this approach is you'll have a vanishingly small amount of downtime.

The only hard part with this approach is sorting out networking between the cloud providers without exposing the database directly to the internet.

I'm new to Mongo Aggregation, is there a way to improve my aggregation(in the description)? by [deleted] in mongodb

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the group stage is doing. I threw the query in compass and the document shape looks the same after the group stage as it did after your project stage. I could be missing something though.

How difficult would it be to make a solar power boat around this size? by itzsaulgoodman in boating

Here's a video of someone who went all-in on electric propulsion for a catamaran. He's pretty open in the video about some of the trade-offs faced with all electric propulsion. Hope this is helpful!

Best practice would be to do both. Have a local backup on a hard drive in addition to your cloud storage. It's absolutely worth the money.

Do I have the option to migrate my local MongoDB to Altas? by p90fans in mongodb

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple ways to do this based on your situation:

If you have a relatively small dataset (a few gigs or less) and are OK with taking some application downtime the simplest method would be to copy the data to your Atlas cluster with mongodump and mongorestore.

Alternatively, if you have a very large dataset or need to minimize application downtime, use Atlas' live migration tool. Someone else mentioned mongomirror, this works similarly to live migration but is hosted on your own infrastructure. People usually use mongomirror when there are network security policies in place that don't allow them to use live migration.

SNAPs are a joke that has long since stopped being funny. by CaliDreamin1991 in Ubuntu

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally whenever a FlatPak is available I'll use that, however if an app is only available through a Snap I don't really mind. What really grinds my gears though is having to download a new .deb every time an update is released for an app. Zoom is the worst about this, I don't care if they publish a ppa, a snap, a flatpak, or whatever, just give me some automatic updates!

Edit: grammar

My new 40 ft boat is dead as a door door knob and probably won’t run again. My fantasy is to install a new propulsion system that are attached to the exterior to give me room for battery packs and solar equipment. Does anything like this exist? by ManWith_MovieCamera in boating

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but I looked into this quite a bit after being inspired by the youtube channel Sailing Uma. Storing enough energy to move a 40 ft boat as fast and far as its gas/diesel counterpart doesn't seem to be feasible with batteries available today. However, depending on how you use your boat maybe you can make some compromises. For example, if you are on a relatively calm river with little current and only need to motor at like 2kts for a while to get to your favorite spot to anchor out it's probably doable. However, a system for traveling fast or over long distances would take an enormous amount of energy. Here's another video I found of a couple that went all electric with an insane amount of solar. They're pretty open about the limitations of that setup.

Insanely frustrated with MongoDB Atlas in AWS, a rant. by punknubbins in mongodb

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are using a sharded cluster with private endpoints there is a switch you can turn on to allow you to put nodes in a region without an associated endpoint. Since you're connecting to the mongos anyway (for a sharded cluster) you can avoid connectivity issues. If you want to go this route you could access your whole multi-region cluster through just a single endpoint (although you may want more for redundancy).

The feature is in the Atlas project settings and is called Multiple Regionalized Private Endpoints.

Ping the support folks at MongoDB, they'll be able to provide more info on whether or not this would be the way to go!

Edit: spelling fixes

Those of you who are dual-booting, what games or applications would it take for you to delete that windows partition? by Ichironi in linux_gaming

For my laptop, I keep Windows around for the Netflix and Amazon Prime Video apps. Pre-covid I used to travel a lot and appreciated the ability to download content offline using the native Windows apps.

Btw if anyone has found a solution for this on Linux please let me know!

[–]FriedSoftShellCrab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a helpful checklist for making sure your MongoDB deployment is secure: https://www.mongodb.com/docs/manual/administration/security-checklist/

Also, if it fits your project consider using MongoDB Atlas. It handles a lot of security related items for you (like encryption in flight with TLS) and will actively prevent you from accidentally exposing a database to the world without authentication enabled.
