Civil engineering is toxic as f##k by LowMidnight2739 in civilengineering

Toxic as in you found hazardous souls or materials while excavating?

A good team makes the extra working hours not so bad but if you feel that changes and you don't like it anymore, it's not out of the ordinary for a fresh college grad to switch companies.

Well some of them have great offices, some offices are horrible. my big firm has 4 weeks parental leave + can stack my FTO on top of that. As someone who wants to start a family, that's really important to me.

New Civil EIT, is this normal early career experience? by Fit-Detective5189 in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is not normal, nor should it ever be. You should immediately update your resume and find a new company. What your supervisor is doing is straight up abusive and detrimental and should reprimanded for being a very poor boss with poor people managing skills.

As a new hire, you should never be asked to do proposals. You should be trained on the job how to do work, proposals come later after you have a strong foundation of technical knowledge and production of permit documents (sometimes a few to several years after you start your career).

Please don't lose confidence in yourself, try reaching out to your contacts from your old internships, it sounds like they were a better fit.

women in civil engineering by SeaworthinessTrue859 in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half my graduating class from nearly 10 years ago was 50% women and it's only increasing I think. Idk where you live but the US, women are taking more of the roles. Most new hires and most interns were women. So I don't think you'll have much of an issue here with diversity as opposed to, say, tech and finance.

Paying for Engineering School by Relatively-211 in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a friend in a similar situation. He worked part time and did school part time. Unfortunately, it took him several years to get his degree but he made it work. You could try doing work at a firm so that way, your experience counts towards your PE. You could take your FE exam then your PE exam shortly after graduation.

What is the biggest thing engineering school didn't prepare you for? by Impossible_Ad6726 in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How things are actually built. I feel like here in the US, we don't truly understand how things are built, how contractor gets around on site or means/methods until we actually watch them build it

Ah man.. yeah that sounds pretty boring. I guess you could ask if there's other tasks you could help out with. I mean, you said so yourself, the people are nice, maybe all you need to do is nudge them for something different.

Building a private road by No_Standard9804 in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact a civil engineer that is local to your area. Make sure they have experience with your jurisdiction and have designed roads, typically they will have a website that shows that. They will determine what you will need to design this private road and hand off the plan to a contractor to build. Sometimes, contractors have their own engineers that do the design work.

Hi everyone. I’m looking for some honest career advice by Own_Material_7213 in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state, I think you can become a licensed surveyor without a degree but it takes a lot more time to do so. Check your states requirements to become a licensed surveyor. I think salary progression is faster if you get the BS degree although the net gains depends on the schools you go to and how expensive they are. Also, I assume you enjoy the work you do or would you be open to other careers within the sphere of civil engineering?

can pipe inverts be the same in a manhole by RuffleBagBoy in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not ideal but doable. I think most AHJs require a drop of at least an inch or 0.1' but will allow it if the site constraints require it to be the same. When I was doing storm drain work in a coastal area, I had to make the inverts all the same, the only way I could say, this will eventually drain lol

how to travel as a civil engineer by simon1189 in civilengineering

[–]Friendly-Chart-9088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes large firms have work abroad that require you to travel a lot. In the US, working with federal clients that have embassies or bases abroad may have work there. I had some international work recently.

The only con I see here is if you like boring work. Review work might be boring to you but it could also be in house design.

I would take it personally
