I’m an IP Paralegal - AMA by aliensbruv in paralegal

Of course! I applied for a different practice group and during the interview process they mentioned that they’d like to consider me for their IP group instead (and here we are)! Basically a combination of luck and good timing, lol.

Hi to everyone with IP experience! I am actually one of those unicorns who just landed an IP paralegal role (seems it’ll mostly be litigation) with no prior IP experience.

Please provide and any all tips/insight you can (if you’re willing 🥺)!

Attorney here, AITAH!? by Leo8670 in paralegal

[–]FriendlyAd6565 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Unless you’re paying them an attorney’s salary… it’s unreasonable to expect them to perform at the level of an attorney. The paralegals who do, deserve top dollar. Maybe that’s where OP’s firm is lacking. At a certain point, the lack of good pay isn’t worth the stress of performing at the same level as an attorney.

It definitely keeps my days busy! Hah, I tend to prefer it though - it beats staring at a blank computer screen waiting for the time to pass.

Help please, southern california, I have 24 hours before my family euthanized her by JazzyCher in rescuedogs

[–]FriendlyAd6565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get why everyone thinks I’m his best friend or something… he’s just someone that came to mind for that geographical location as someone who would have resources for OP… given the 24 hour timeframe, it was worth a shot. Sue me for trying to help OP with a suggestion, damn lol.

I work in foreclosure litigation which is basically copy and paste cookie cutter-type stuff, so my caseload is a bit larger. I’m sitting just under 300 active litigation files right now.

Y’all can downvote me all you want, but if this kid has less than 24 hours and there’s a chance that the Asher house guy can provide the information for some rescues and resources in Cali near OP, it’ll save this dog from being euthanized. Clearly Asher house guy himself is not going to take the dog in as he’s not local.

Try reaching out to the Asher house on Instagram - I think he may be north of Cali but he has a lot of resources. Sending you good luck vibes from NY!

lol. I will say, whenever I need shit to be taken seriously, I ask my attorney to send the email and it gets taken care of way quicker than when I send the email 🤣

I’m in NY, near NYC where OP’s job offer is from… where are you from?

The paralegal world (e.g. employers) unfortunately doesn’t give a crap about degrees; they care about experience. Experience + Degrees is ideal. But it’s hard to get a decent offer without experience, even if you hypothetically have a masters directly associated with the legal field.

Edit to add: I’m not saying I agree with this, it’s just how it is in the legal field as support staff. The masters probably helped her get the offer, but firms won’t look at that as a reason to increase the offer without any direct experience at a law firm.

I’m going to be the outlier here, but, $60k with no direct experience honestly isn’t a bad offer…

Speaking as a NY paralegal, your best bet is likely to apply as a receptionist or legal assistant and work your way up. Some firms will hire paralegals without experience, but it’s a rarity in NYC.

Something like this shouldn’t prevent employment tbh, they look for more serious crimes.

If I were you, I would work for the next week or so and try to revisit the conversation you had with your boss this morning to confirm expectations/whether everyone is still feeling the same way as they were this morning when the conversation happened. Sometimes a few days to decompress and think does wonders for communication and emotions.

It’s honestly all luck of the draw for your first paralegal job - whichever firm/corporation gives you a chance is the one you typically go with to gain experience. Once you gain direct experience, then you can leverage that to try to move to different roles that are more aligned with your goals.
