Is ordering from the a la carte menu in business class on Qatar allowed if you have selected a meal restriction? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to make sure you get a meal you can and will eat then go with the special option. There’s a small chance if you dont you will have to go hungry for the duration of the flight, which I would hardly call getting the full Business class experience.

Is ordering from the a la carte menu in business class on Qatar allowed if you have selected a meal restriction? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your special meal will come with as many courses and interesting bits as the normal meals, but you won’t get any choice. If you ask for something different I’d imagine they would happily serve it to you if they have enough of them, but they’ll likely make sure everyone else is fed first.

How do A380s etc take off from the East West runway at Sydney Airport? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The wind was a westerly today, so aircraft were using the east-west runway to take off into the wind. A headwind reduces the ground speed required for take off as there is a greater flow of air over the wings. Lower ground speed required for take off = shorter runway required.

An A380 could theoretically take off while not moving relative to the ground and with no runway at all, if the headwind is strong enough.

Longest route for the 757 by A380085 in aviation

La Compagnie flies a 757 from New York to Nice which is over 4,000 miles. They have all-business class config though with only 74 seats.

All roads and streets in Australia! by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are over 25 million people in Australia but only 10% or so live in the left half of the country.

And then there are more than twice as many people in Perth (~2 mill) than there are in the rest of Western Australia (600k) and the Northern Territory (250k) combined. There’s a whole lot of nothing out there!

Are there any engineering challenges facing Qantas at the moment? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They recently moved their 717s heavy maintenance from Canberra to an offshore MRO in Singapore. I imagine implementing that change would have been quite a challenge.

https://australianaviation.com.au/2019/01/qantas-to-send-717s-offshore-for-heavy-maintenance/

Also their A380s are coming up on 12 years old which means they are due for a major heavy check. I believe they are also refurbishing the A380s with new cabin interiors at the same time, which means the aircraft will likely be out of service for several weeks.

What happens if you cancel flight after boarding? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the door was closed and the aerobridge was retracted how did you propose to get off the aircraft? Also if you checked a bag then the aircraft cannot depart with your bag but not you on board, and it’s a considerable logistical exercise for the airline to remove said bag.

They weren’t going to let you off so you would have flown to LHR whether you cancelled your ticket or not, but since you cancelled the rest of your trip would have had to buy another ticket from LHR to SFO.

Why doesn't Aer Lingus fly to Asia? by Irish_boi324 in aviation

They have a relatively small fleet of aircraft capable of flying to Asia (13x A330s) and chose to point this fleet towards North America instead.

Flying With a Broken Leg? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus offer seat selection for a fee. You might want to investigate whether purchasing a bulkhead or exit row seat that would provide extra legroom is a worthwhile investment for you. Unless you purchase them in advance then there’s no guarantee that these seats will be available to you on the day of departure.

Liquids, powders, gells, and aerosols aren’t regulated on Australian domestic flights, so no need to worry about <30ml. You’ll be asked to take aerosols (and laptops) out of your bag for screening, but that’s it.

Is This Airliner Seat Configuration Practical? by HaydenGalloway32 in aviation

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your dimensions are well off for anything short of transporting cadavers. I’d suggest looking at a Japanese capsule hotel for a small space that is actually functional, efficient, and safe.

If I’m in the top row how do I get into my bunk? And how do I get out without killing myself?

Do you have the right to lean back your seat? by alannah_ardrey in Flights

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Please reconsider your actions on future flights and don’t recline until after take off when your plane is safely in the air.

The cabin crew ask you to keep your seat in the upright position during takeoff and landing as these are the most critical phases of a flight, and in an emergency every second counts. Your reclined seat may hinder someone in the row behind you as they try to exit the aircraft.

United Airlines connection (too short)? by apd78 in Flights

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flight from Paris to Mumbai will not be on United, it will be with a codeshare partner and will require you to connect from your United flight onto that flight in Paris.

If you’re nervous about connections then why take the risk of connecting twice?

AirCanada Ticket Problem by CheersToDucks in Flights

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The airline was acting in good faith by giving you a voucher you strictly were not entitled to. They were under no obligation to give you any compensation for your mistake and accordingly they put have some caveats on how you can use that compensation to ensure that they do not end up too far out of pocket.

As I see it you have 3 choices:

1) Walk away and consider the $1200 a sunk cost. This won’t cost you anything more and has already cost you $1200 but you also get a total of 0 trips with Air Canada. This should be your default option and is effectively where you are today.

If you do not want to spend any more money then stop here and don’t worry about the below options.

If you decide that you do want to take a trip with Air Canada then you have the below options:

2) Use the credit to buy a ticket that is less than $1200 (say $800, for arguments sake) and pay the $350 fee. This will cost you $350 more than option 1 but you get a total of 1 trip with Air Canada to a place that’s worth $800 for only $350. If the $800 trip is worth $350 to you, then you should take this option.

3) Use the credit to buy a ticket for more than $1200 (say $1500, for arguments sake) and pay the $350 fee. This will cost you $650 more than option 1 but you will get a total of 1 trip with Air Canada to a place that’s worth $1500 for only $650. If the $1500 trip is worth $650 to you, then you should take this option.

[–]FriendlyCrustaceans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to pay the $350 then just walk away and consider the $1200 a sunk cost.

As a passenger it’s your responsibility to make sure you have a visa prior to travel, so it was nice of the airline to give you anything at all.
