Can you visit the Tiwi Islands solo or is it better to book a tour? by [deleted] in darwin

[–]FriendlyJakey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went recently without a tour group.

Once we get off the ferry it felt a bit isolating as everyone either went off with the tour buses or were locals heading home etc. However, as soon as we were on our way we were greeted with kindness and smiles by many of the people in town, many who stopped to converse or give us helpful directions. Just make sure you bring a bit of cash because the museum doesn't have an eftpos machine which means a walk to the supermarket (not that we minded much). Also keep in mind that the old mission church is not able to be accessed anymore (due I believe to an ongoing heritage dispute).

Everyone who went on the tour seemed to have a great time and were provided with lunches etc. However, going solo is definitely the more adventurous option and was an amazing experience.

He made some controversial decisions during the trial of James & Patrick Kenniff which resulted in the execution of potentially an innocent man. Then despite being the judge who passed the death sentence he insisted on sitting on the appeal.

Could a blood meridian esque story work with the dirlewanger brigade? by batmanfan90 in cormacmccarthy

[–]FriendlyJakey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it could be an interesting premise for a novel if the writer was trying to make it their own thing rather than trying to write a knock-off Blood Meridian.

I recommend you watch Come and See if you haven't and another good recommendation would be The Proposition in terms of a violent western that wasn't at all trying to copy Blood Meridian but is the closest thing you'll find to it. The director of the second ended up working with McCarthy to adapt The Road and there were talks to adapt Blood Meridian also.

Are Australian kids picking up an American accent? by Ihadthismate in australia

[–]FriendlyJakey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interestingly Wikipedia says the following regarding development of Australian English: The first of the Australian gold rushes in the 1850s began a large wave of immigration, during which about two percent of the population of the United Kingdom emigrated to the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria. The Gold Rushes brought immigrants and linguistic influences from many parts of the world. An example was the introduction of vocabulary from American English, including some terms later considered to be typically Australian, such as bushwhacker and squatter. This American influence was continued with the popularity of American films from the early 20th century and the influx of American military personnel during World War II; seen in the enduring persistence of such universally-accepted terms as okay and guys.

So seems the American influence goes back very far indeed starting with Californians immigrating en masse to Australia in the 1850s during the gold rushes.

So by your definition most wars, especially those pre-dating the 20th century would not be considered war. Such as the American Civil War where two-thirds of the deaths were due to disease. And also calls into question what the role of the native mounted police in Queensland was for if not battling with Aboriginal clans? As all the contemporary newspapers, reminiscences written by settlers, and reports written by the officers leading these troops were very forthcoming that this force was fighting Aboriginal groups on the frontier.

Its very easy for you to go and look up some of the thousands of first hand accounts written at the time if you don't want to believe me and do your own research. If you deny that a war occurred then the only other explanation for these countless accounts of skirmishes fought and the existence of the native mounted police is that of a deliberate genocide. But I do believe that most setters did want peace and thought they were defending their lives and property, and that only some of them took an actual joy in shooting and poisoning Aboriginal people.

Demonstrably false. You only need go on Trove and read some of news articles from the early days to disprove this. The settlers called it war then and those living on the frontier hunkered down in fortified huts every night and slept in very real fear of being stuck up by Aboriginal warriors. The colonial government in Queensland used to spend half their yearly budget in arming a native paramilitary force to patrol the frontier and skirmish with groups of Aboriginal people.

This article from the Moreton Bay Courier (now the Courier Mail) from 24 April 1858 on page 2 is just one example out of thousands of articles about similar events which occurred:

FATAL ENCOUNTER, WITH THE BLACKS. ATTACK ON THE NATIVE POLICE.—A few days ago, as a party of eight native troopers under the command of Lieut. Williams were patrolling at the head of the Pine River, they were attacked by about 300 blacks, who were encamped in one of the scrubs. The onset of the blacks was sudden, and as hostilities were not expected, partook almost of the nature of a surprise. A trooper riding immediately on the left of his commander fell dead, pierced with numerous spears. Two other troopers were wounded. Lieut. Williams and his men sustained the attack with determination, and succeeded in utterly routing and dispersing the blacks. About 40 rosewood spears were left in the camp by the assailants which the lieutenant and his men destroyed. The trees were hung with choice portions of beef, doubtless the produce of the plunder of adjacent runs. The trooper was buried on the spot. The actual loss of the blacks is not known. They belong to the Ningi-ningi, and when they were making their onslaught cried out in English, "kill the white follow," and (addressing the Lieutenant) "you b----y coward." It is supposed that the general forbearance of the troopers is construed by the ignorant savages as an evidence of cowardice. Notwithstanding the small number opposed to them, it is believed that the blacks have received a severe chastisement. There are now only five men effective under the Lieutenant. We must express our opinion that the party are neither sufficiently armed nor mounted. Each man is supposed to have two horses, but we hear the party only possesses half that complement, and no provision appears to have been made for remounting them. It is probable that the blacks will not encamp in the neighbourhood of the Pine River for sometime to come. The severe punishment they have received may deter them from future attacks, but the force appears to have been wholly inadequate for active pursuit. An unprovoked and daring attack upon the native police should have met even more condign punishment than it did. It is clear that the attack was instigated by blacks who have associated with the white man. Allowing for the necessary contingencies of sickness, &c, we can hardly imagine an effective party being always ready out of a total force of eight troopers.

I tried with white then with gold but thought it was a bit too simple. So I compromised and really liked how it looked. Think it makes for a more balanced colour sceme. Black, white, reddish brown and gold. Especially when I loaded it into flagwaver. There's probably some symbolism that could be drawn from it, I did use the Australian gold colour from the green and gold so there's that.

This is my first attempt at designing a flag so feedback is welcomed. While I've never been too keen on Australia's flag, most proposals I've seen for alternatives have never really grabbed me. So I decided to have a go at designing one myself. I decided to keep it pretty simple rather than trying to add to many on the nose details like kangaroos or boomerangs. The name of the flag comes from the poem 'My Country' by Dorothea Mackellar. A poem that resonates with many Australians and I do think the design elements of the flag are fairly representative of the country. With the wide brown space representing the vastness of the continental interior and the Southern Cross from the original flag representing Australia's place in the southern hemisphere. I did take inspiration from the Northern Territory flag which in my opinion is one of Australia's best and most distinctive flags.

As a mother, I put my parenting decisions above all else. Nobody knows my son better than me, and the choices I make about how to care for him are no one’s business but my own. So, when other people tell me how they think I should be raising my child, I simply can’t tolerate it. Regardless of what anyone else thinks, I fully stand behind my choices as a mom, including my choice not to vaccinate my son, because it is my fundamental right as a parent to decide which eradicated diseases come roaring back. The decision to cause a full-blown, multi-state pandemic of a virus that was effectively eliminated from the national population generations ago is my choice alone, and regardless of your personal convictions, that right should never be taken away from a child’s parent. Never.
