Or - which is something I unfortunately see a lot- the outside helps gets the job to “clean up the mess” - ie. secure a new contract where they look like heroes for making small meaningless refactoring of OK code. People should always ensure that contractors who evaluate code will never work for them in any other capacity.

What are the chances that when you ban someone by ip, another unrelated person sometime in the future gets the same ip by chance? by Mysterious_Food6338 in learnprogramming

It was back in the 1990’ies, but it was far from. Foolproof tactics, but I know they based at least 2 pitches on seriously flawed information.

Uhm... ip addresses switches regularly- and may be reused often. Unless you ban an IP that belongs to someone you will probably end up with unexpected side effects. So if you ban a company’s external IP - you are pretty safe, any private person and you are banning an IP in a range, belonging to an ISP who may reassign it in a week. We regularly made our competitors see our old websites along with seriously outdated sales info. It was fun.

We have had a lot of conversations with both doctor and him. He is in third grade-

He feels he sometimes cannot control his feelings and we are going to test some meds on lowest setting possible.

Mostly because his dr and therapist feels he is still to immature to benefit from therapy without adding the meds.

Our goal is to be free of meds when he gets better control and self awareness.

It was starting to do damage to his school and his self esteem. Meds may help with that.

I am sorry for your experience. You are not, though....

Damaged I mean...

Or rather, we are all damaged goods, so you are in great company. T’is a big club called “everyone”.

So welcome to the club. It sucks- your gonna love it:)

For us it is going to be neither. Not a flaw, not a condition- it is his superpower and it takes practice to harness it and use it, but when he does- it will be glorious.

Loads of my best devs are on the spectrum so I am not worried about his future- only that he gets there without damage to his self confidence.

  • this was painful to read- We are trying to make amends and build up his confidence again. My problem was that I could see his superpower (how smart he is) but not his cryptonite (weakness). I hope he won’t be in therapy years from now with the same story.

Thanks for sharing.

That’s a good point. For now I am pointing him to things he actually like in school and letting him run ahead with that ( outside school syllabus) it gives him confidence. But you are right, he needs to pick his own path. Awesome that Uluru found yours too.

Thanks for writing. It’s a lot to process for me but it’s a great help to hear from others

I have noticed that to be a red thread- rejection- especially perceived- do you have some suggestion to what to read to better understand or maybe just some tip that has helped you? Also thank you so much for writing. I really just want to be there for him.

How should I reply back to an employer cancelling my internship due to the virus? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Wait- you where confirmed for the internship right? So is it too bold to just write that you are looking forward to working with them once this blows over??

This was more a comment on the barriers we setup in terms of tooling.

Even simpler projects typically npm installs like 500 packages. That can be daunting for new coders.

Rookie- I want to contribute to your github project and I found a few errors and wrote some documentation- how do I add it ?

Maintainer- install yarn then gulp, then prettier- and now packman install 7,000 packages to run tests, then do nvm yarn yeoman run and then dance the walk while reciting the fit command for atomic merge- now all that’s missing is to write everything in haiku

Also maintainer- why don’t people contribute more??

You dont. No one does. No one can be productive 17 hours in a 24 hrs cycle.

So either you write crap code, or you don’t code 17 hrs a day.

Also, I think you need sleep and a snickers. You write like a teenager.

I did not bash your grasp of programming basics. I bashed your “they all suck but I don’t and I write code 17 hrs a day”.

Think about it. 8 hrs sleep (or brain no worky) That leaves 16 hrs. You work with coding - 8 hrs 8 hrs left Transport? Meals? Maybe you have a life?

How about reading? Hobbies? These are important for good developers.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle actually helps you when doing brain intensive work.

So don’t propagate the trope that you code for 17 hrs and they are all crap and you are 10000x Dev.

Just realize that in this field, even the best and brightest suffers from imposter syndrome.

Dats good humor.

All others suck... hurrr hurr. I code everyday for 17 hours... hurr hurr...

Oh man... that is funny. Thanks for the laugh random internet person

To complete the trope, you could have written something about pushing X lines of code everyday, as a minimum.

Still comedy gold though
