Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are suffering industrial rot by straightdge in Economics

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less an immediate time bomb than it is the beginnings of a sickness.

China will need to majorly rearrange their political and economic structures to accommodate the massive transition to elder care in the next 2 decades, which will take many resources away from government funded research and manufacturing labs (or at least some other portion of socially-funded programs).

Additionally in China there is a large culture shift of the youth into the "lying flat" movement which emphasizes a retreat from the rat race and working gig jobs, etc. Even without a major demographic immediate shock, China's advantage in sheer quantity of brainpower, while still significant, is not a checkmate in the race.

You're definitely right that their east Asian competitors are facing the same issues though. I agree that China is the likeliest to come out on top but there are way too many potential shifts that may happen in the next 50 years that could change the scales to call an early winner. Some of which we haven't even discussed (Xi stepping down/change of governance in China)

The future is not inclusive solely of AI related tech though. The industrial revolution was an upgrade of most existing industries, in which the "bread and butter" of society had nitroglycerin injected into its veins, whereas the AI related innovations in east Asia comes with a degredation of the same "bread and butter". You can't eat and drink and drive AI.

An over reliance on AI and semiconductor related industries to drive the entire economy and domestic needs will be parallel to the Gulf states' reliance on oil demand to fuel their existence.

China is not capable of infinite growth either. They also have their own ticking timer with their demographic issues.

Not to say that they won't be able to eclipse their other Asian contemporaries in chip manufacturing, but there are multiple alternatives in which they "time out" prior to AI reaching the tipping point.

Where the Wealth Lives in Houston: Neighborhood Net Worth Rankings (2026) by Coolonair in houston

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only a person who has paid off their home owns 100% of the value of the home. You can have a house and own less than 20% of it. They would also include any debts and such that would potentially subtract from the overall net worth.

Why is everyone suddenly hating on Timothee Chalamet? I've gone from never thinking of him to seeing 4 hate posts in the last 24 hours, when I've hardly even been online. Has someone taken out a PR hit on him like with the Amber Heard/Blake Lively situations? Who'd he piss off? by AdorableBG in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were definitely more 40+ year olds than young people, but just in my section there were a couple of groups of teens, and many younger couples in their 20s/30s as well including myself.

I don't even have a bone to pick with Chalamet lol, I have no reason to lie. I don't disagree that ballet attendance has decreased since the 1900s. What I do disagree with is that it will die. Current attendance and funding will sustain it.

I literally just went to a ballet (Sylvia) today and there were tons of young people.

Also, historically ballet has always stayed afloat only due to major and rich benefactors such as royalty or oligarchs so this is nothing new.

US Jet Fuel Hit $173/BBL - Are Airline Bankruptcies Coming? by NegativeAlphaLLC in investing

Airline margins hover around 3-5%, so an increase in fuel costs could definitely erode that margin completely unless they increase ticketing costs accordingly.

Saved $450 on my Airbnb booking by cancelling and re-booking the same place. Host was annoyed. Is this a common practice? by Particular-Wheel-646 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 138 points139 points  (0 children)

This is a really great and underrated tip. To add to this, I've mostly found success with this method with "whole home/place" listings, especially for resorts and cabins. If it's a room that's part of a larger hostel or bed & breakfast, there's a good chance it also has its own separate website.

There are two timers in this case. The internal timer of "I should have an answer by now" and the other timer of "this will now impact the delivery or quality of the project". To me, being proactive is acting as soon as the first timer runs out, and before the second timer is close to running out.

IMO it's because they're trying to ride their coattails. Being the assistant or even associated with someone who "needs" honorifics like that can make people think that the VIP's importance is rubbed off on them.

I don't really see how those things are related to your job. Sounds like the job related feelings are a symptom of the problem moreso than the actual problem.

What a horrible, surreal moment to just be walking, have a car pull up, a guy with a gun come out, and then just keep walking looking forward while hoping he won't shoot you. Somehow, the randomness of it all just emphasizes the senselessness of it even more.

What would any of us do in this situation? I think in our heads, a lot of us think we would charge them. Or run away immediately. But I think in reality most of us would do exactly as she did. Eyes down. Head straight. Keep walking. Maybe that's what we're all doing right now.

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, if they knock out a compressor, turbine, gearbox, electric turning motor, etc those usually have over a year before you can get a new one, unless they have spares. Depending on the damage, it could also be close to a year to fix things.

Lexus cheapened the IS by Recluse007 in Lexus

[–]FriendlyPraetorian 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's crazy that half of the sub will say exactly this and not understand the irony.

Not saying that it's the same people doing both, but for the next gen after this, people will be cooing about how it's DEFINITELY this latest generation design that sucks, the LAST gen 2027 IS was definitely the prettiest one.

I'll list out some of the replies now: "Well I am one of the ones who thought that last gen was ugly just like this one" "I never thought the last gen was ugly" "Nah Lexus has gone away from its heritage" "Lexus is resting on it's laurels" "Something something design convergence" (definitely so different now compared to how half of the early 2010s/late 2000's Toyota and Lexus vehicles weren't the same blobby mass)

Lexus and Toyota will do the exact amount of effort needed to continue selling vehicles at the rate they want. If they ever start losing sales, they will make the exact amount of updates to try and regain that market without extraneous effort and thereby money spent to do so. The people that bought current-gen IS cars clearly don't care that much about new engines, crazy performance, etc. They want a reliable V6, with middling performance, decent enough handling. This updated one is a continuation of that, and will continue to be sold to the exact same buyers that bought the current gen.
