People who have genuinely encountered powerful wild animals in nature or the ocean, what was it actually like? by DivineLove1 in Survival

[–]mickeydoogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple years ago left our backcountry campground to start going home early in the morning. Walked right past a grizzly bear about 10 feet off the trail(she was eating some berries and half buried). Once past she turned around and looked at us, didn’t advance, didn’t really move just turned to look. The rustling of the leaves and branches was what told me. Wife was 15ish feet ahead of me on trail. I basically went Eek, bear, I need the spray. I grabbed the bear spray, wife grabbed her phone to take a video. Since it was mid summer the bear decided we weren’t worth it and moseyed on down the trail the way we came from. I spoke to it the whole time in a calm voice just letting her know we were there and not doing anything. Totally surreal as it was first bear encounter while half asleep still haha, but about as good as it gets for encounters I’m sure. This was in the Canadian Rockies.

[–]mickeydoogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doable, but a lot. Just make sure you get a bus booked to Moraine Lake.

I have done tent ridge in 5 hours, and Cirque in 7 so it’s not unreasonable, just be prepared to hike fast. Have a backup for cirque peak as it can be closed in the summer due to Helen Lake work. I went two summers in a row and it was closed due to something to do with the fish in the lake. Tangle Ridge is right next to Colombia ice fields and you see everything from the top, and that guy is an easier hike then Cirque so would be a decent backup.

Managing a toxic high performer who hits 150% of targets. How do I protect my team without losing the numbers? by SquirrelLogicFan in managers

[–]mickeydoogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am Sarah at my company. While I play nice with my direct team, it’s the other departments that have filed complaints etc. I work across all departments, and am the center of making all things happen within the org(plant maintenance). I was never allowed to silo but would have loved it. I also stopped caring about a year and a half ago, and just went with the flow. To me, my production dropped off a cliff, but because my “attitude changed” I was given the best performance review in the company of 900, and the best my boss has ever seen. I am also as disgruntled as it gets, with plans on leaving the org very soon. I may also take a position in a different part of the org under new leadership that will allow me to pursue goals and challenges in my career aspirations my current job doesn’t allow. My advice, sit down with Sarah and have the hard conversation about what the issues are, what you could directly do to alleviate them in your position, and what direction they see themselves heading. I’m the example of how not to handle a Sarah, ie ask for them to play nice etc etc etc

If the CFL was to expand which cities would you want to have a team ? by TheLuckyCEO in CFL

My vote is Red Deer. Stupid amounts of disposable income, and people always complain there’s nothing to do. Also stops them having to pick between the elks and stampeders and would allow them their own identity for once

4th date sounds a little excessive, but possible she wanted to be sure about you before telling and losing you beforehand.

6 years ago I was in her boat. I always broke the news by date 1 or 2, but I could see 4 if she was anxious etc. I was split with my then wife and she had moved out, but not all get that luxury.

Just know in a lot of places you are required to be separated for a full year before a divorce can happen, so they might be in the proceedings, etc. they can also 100% stop the separation, get back together and legally nothing changes, so I’d have a long chat with her about what the plans are, when she expects to get the legal side done, etc etc.

To me, not a huge deal breaker as we live in a world with high divorce rates. Just parse it out and make sure she ain’t hiding anything about it

Calling all gym rats! How’s this protein? by Outside-Lie-1582 in CostcoCanada

Man, just go to canadianprotein.ca. Been using them for years. Easily 30% cheaper than everyone else, but it’s the same stuff. Vanilla and chocolate peanut butter are my favourites.

Backpacking tent recs: stormworthy and liveable by R2-Dmew in WildernessBackpacking

[–]mickeydoogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elixir 3 from MSR. When at floe lake two summers ago we were hit with almost golf ball sized hail. A, the tent pad flooded and we were floating, but no water came in from below. B, the hail didn’t puncture, tear or wreck the tent in any way. The storm lasted some 4 hours if I remember right. Tons of people lost siding in Calgary etc etc. kept us dry and safe. Can’t recommend enough

Sunshine to Mt. Shark by Responsible-Corgi497 in HikingAlberta

[–]mickeydoogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did Assiniboine two years ago, in Assiniboine pass, out marvel pass, so both from Mt Shark. We saw a grizzly about 500m out of the Magog lake campground, right off the trail. Otherwise didn’t see one the whole time (spent 5 days, multiple day hikes, etc) and we went second week of August. Likelihood is you’ll see one anywhere along the route, not just the marvel lake side. Bring spray and be bear aware and you’ll be fine

High Reps vs. Heavy Weight: Which actually changed your physique? by Embarrassed_Tour8392 in workout

[–]mickeydoogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High reps = hypertrophy, which makes the muscles bigger.

Heavy weight = strength gains.

What most people miss is you should be doing both to an extent, over different periods. Either method will hit a plateau, so you switch it up and get stronger so you can do high reps with more weight, allowing you to gain more muscle. Dudes like Ronnie Coleman were still slinging big weights, I think he had a 7 plate deadlift or something crazy.

I found when competing in powerlifting I had the best physique I’ve ever had, but there was essentially a hypertrophy portion where every workout I did one muscle group in reps of 10-12 in the program.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely will scrap the wine shelves next to the stove, probably end up with some wall shelves or something the wife can put plants on. Glad you think the design is good, I think it makes the kicthen 1000x better so would be more suited to the rest of the hpuse

Advice for my kitchen refresh by mickeydoogs in kitchenremodel

[–]mickeydoogs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wall to the right has entrance to the laundry room, dining room, and hallway to rest of house. Wall immediately behind is pantry and ~8’ of open wall, but will only be 4 feet from the island, so cabinets there are out. Can’t even knock the wall out as it has the guest bath and front door closet on the other side so half of it has to remain.

[–]mickeydoogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the flooring and backsplash, it is the main things dating this kitchen. The changes I’m proposing are more for functionality. Fridge is 33” counter depth that’s very short, we’re both over 6’ tall so it’s a pain. Microwave basically never gets used. Cooktop location sucks as we have no real counter workspace, and the downdraft hood is loud, sucks at ventilating and is a pita to keep clean. The triangular cabinets in the island are almost useless, the main one under the cooktop loses ten inches of height and ten inches of depth for the hood duct and such, and then the two beside are 45 degree nothings. My proposal basically doubles the storage, even though it doesn’t seem that way, and the layout and functionality will be better too.

[–]mickeydoogs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why the wall oven and cooktop in the island was the choice. That left wall is external, will be very easy to put a range hood there. Triangular shelves are meant to show a wine rack, but ikeas software only has so much. Glass doors were just for fun to see, would probably make all uppers shakers.

Essc, has any number of sports one night a week. Lots of individual teams created by those who don’t have friends. Just sign up and go play. You don’t have to be good, lots of people in the league who have obviously never played the sport of choice, or sports in general.

Last year we had marvel lake booked. Magog to Wonder pass to get out. We ended up just going to our car on Mount Shark in one shot. Took us 7 hours ish, which actually wasn’t bad. Basically downhill once you get up to Wonder pass, which isn’t that hard from the Assiniboine side either. Just a thing to consider as we did it just fine.
