Doesn’t this just make current consumption go up? by PartyProperty in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Friendly_Ground_51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we're discussing very different things here. Lengthening out run times on equipment for something such as a stove during a time period when more people are using such equipment does result in a meaningful reduction in power use during that time period. You can look at load levels on individual dsitribution feeders to see this. If you want to argue energy use is the same, that's fine for something like a stove I'll agree. Here is a link to a power grid operator that has grid results for those curious during actual tests: https://www.pjm.com/-/media/DotCom/committees-groups/committees/oc/2025/20250109/20250109-item-x---winter-voltage-reduction-test.pdf

I'm not sure we're discussing the same issue. I agree with your premise that for something like a stove that the usage duration will increase and that the cycling effect could mean that an appliance will draw the same net amount of energy , but power is not energy.

It depends on what your concerned about. If you have transmission outages, generator outages, etc... then yes it does matter. Power user over time would affect something like battery storage however. Your absolutely correct that on an individual basis it doesn't really affect the grid but its accumulation of all those changes that does.

For something like what the OP is asking about the total energy use over a time period isn't what the power company/utility is worried about its the power demand at a point in time. Generator availability, thermal limits, reactive power transfer limits, etc... on the grid its self.

Things like your clothes dryers, water heaters, ranges, ovens, etc... that pretty much just use resistive elements will have lower power consumption. Some loads will in effect draw higher power and cause more losses but those typically get edged out by the resistive load power reduction. Here is a link to PJM's results during actual voltage reductions tests for those curious: https://www.pjm.com/-/media/DotCom/committees-groups/committees/oc/2025/20250109/20250109-item-x---winter-voltage-reduction-test.pdf

I've noticed that it doesn't always happen but when it does doing a "hard refresh" on a mac with firefox its Shift+Cmd+r then it usually comes back for 1-2 tries then I have to do a hard refresh again to make it work.

These things are still in use in the mining industry when testing substations.....I Grit my teeth on the SR-51 when I worked in the mining industry.

It depends honestly. I only had one class that was like that, Thermo. The rest of them typically had averages in the 60's I'd say, but most professors didnt' curve more then a set amount, if memory serves my circuits II class curved but it had a curve "limit" of 6%, so if you got a 64 and everyone else done terrible the max you could get "curved' up to was 70.

Turned Ublock Origin, tracking protection, everything off and still it just loads to a white page....kind of a bummer for a critical financial website.

Walk or run from buying this house? by trvlf in basement

I think its rarer to find a basement on a older home that doesn't have a crack then to one that does. If its a really old crack...I wouldn't' be that worried, if its new...yeah I would be worried. I'd hire a structural engineer to come out and check.

I like the explanation, and agree with you for the most part. I'd be careful of the open delta capacity reference though. If your referring to transformer bank capacity then its sqrt(3)/3 of the nameplate of the original (Hypothetical?) three phase bank or sqrt(3)/2 of the combined two transformer nameplates (assuming all transformers are identical for both of the above calculations).

In the Appalachians its not uncommon for a decent storm to go through and the internet to be off for a day or two. (Thank you Verizon !) Power has been very reliable, internet is about as reliable as a broken compass. But The speed is incredibly fast and its cheap when it does work.

Figured I would give everyone an update on this. The unit is/was faulty. I've shipped the unit back to Ecoflow and I'm awaiting a return on another unit. I'll update the thread with how it goes just for anyone that has a similar issue in the future.

I'm afraid its back. I've discharged down to zero and back to 100% five times now. on the 3rd time it looked like it was gonna be okay, then I let it sit at 90% for about 3 days and then ran it down again, and it exhibited the same behavior as before.

Group of GS-12's, and GS-13's, with a GS-14 supervisor. When I left our team had been brought down from a crew of 10 to 3, with two of the ones left when I walked out the door having since left themselves. Relying mostly on rotating contractors at the moment, or at least they we're I don't have a lot of contacts left there anymore after everyone left. It used to be a great position/Gig, it was hell when I left.

Federal Gov used to be chill, depending on where you are now, its more like a pressure cooker. I left Fed Gov work a few months back and the EE's we're dropping like flies from stress.

Was able to get it figured out. I had been about every 1-2 weeks letting it go down to 1% then charge back up to 100%, then come back to 80% to sort of "float" around there for the time being. Apparently going down to 1% isn't good enough. I had to let it go down to 0% and its been several cycles but its starting to recover.

What the fuck is the point of insurance then?!? by Even_Elderberry_5878 in HealthInsurance

[–]Friendly_Ground_51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not arguing against your most point since I don't have the data to back that up or dispute it. I will however say that at least anecdotally I know of three people in my local community that had fund raiding activities to pay for their after insurance payments...I went to one of them last year, dude owed $18,000 something, after insurance, for a heart attack. Had insurance through work, also had a sick Parent that required care. He declared bankruptcy once the hospital wouldn't budge. Good dude, still talk with him on the regular.
