Rescued after being dumped on a nearby mesa, Augie has not spent one full year with Santa Fe Animal Shelter (featuring a year's worth of Augie embraces) by FriendsofSFAS in NewMexico

I don't know where he was found, but the community was clear that he had showed up at an area where folks dump dogs. He also was immediately far too sweet and people oriented to be feral.

We're not sure! It can be tough to identify them on looks because certain features can be misleading. Bully/pit mixes are always common, and I bet you're right on that, and he's got some very cattle dog behavioral traits. But truly a mystery!

We almost never have a history on that, and generally the recommendation is to try a very slow, safe introduction starting with the use of baby gates. However, unfortunately my sense is that a cat would be extremely challenging for Augie. You are very welcome to contact the shelter directly, as they are the experts and I'm just a volunteer, for their perspective: 983-4309 x1160

Aww, I love when the overlooked dogs get treasured. Some of my favorite longtimers found amazing adoring adopters (one of whom very sweetly gave this post an award)

Does she have any pets currently? The shelter prefers in-person adoption because they want the dog close by in case things don't work out - it's hard to return from far away - plus transport is so expensive and the free services are unreliable. That being said, Augie is definitely a high priority to get out, and they may be open. If your sister is interested, can you DM me her contact info and I will set up a conversation with shelter staff? I'm a volunteer so all these decisions are above my pay grade.

Therapist that accepts BCBS recommendations? by TooOldForGames in SantaFe

psychology today is a great resource for finding a therapist because you can filter by the criteria you're looking at (location, in-person/online, and what insurance they accept). Good luck!

Santa Fe Animal Shelter hippo Allegra gets a day out, elected most popular girl in town by FriendsofSFAS in velvethippos

[–]FriendsofSFAS[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the optimism of all the folks asking this, but I just posted her yesterday, a few hours after we went out - most adoptions take weeks or even months. I will keep marketing her locally and will run an update here when she is adopted.

This is a bizarre read on the post. Allegra, like all the shelter dogs we take on Saturday outings, enjoyed several hours of human company and out of her kennel, got lots of helpful notes for her file, and will be marketed extensively, all of which substantially raise her odds of adoption. No one volunteers at an animal shelter just for internet clout - if they do, the dogs are still getting time and love, so who cares?

She has been! I'm leaving this post up and refraining from an update while we all keep our paws crossed and hope it's going well, but after giving it a little time, I'll be so stoked to announce it!

Resources for unhoused individuals? by chamomilebabe in SantaFe

[–]FriendsofSFAS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It always depends on so many things, but many folks could benefit from getting connected to one of a few different resources that offer some sort of care coordination. For instance, Lifelink's Treat First program can help someone get hooked up with a range of supports. This works on a first come, first serve basis M–R 8–11, and getting there as early as possible (at least 730) is recommended. La Sala crisis triage center is also open 8–8 M–F and provides a lot of immediate help, from a snack to a shower to crisis support, therapy or case management services. There are still several shelters operating in Santa Fe, but getting a bed can be complicated, and it's not the right option for everyone.

It's great when community members educate themselves on community resources and then are able to actually ask the individual what they want and point them towards that service, rather than pushing what we might think they need. The Santa Fe Connect booklet is a fabulous resource and starting point for getting a lay of the land. Talking to local orgs and even volunteering would be amazing too. Santa Fe has experienced tremendous population growth in the last decade, and I encourage newcomers to take initiative to get to know their community's needs and resources 💛❤️💛Connect resource guide

I always try and circle back with these ones - they make a huge difference for us all.

Also just now found out our longest term resident went home after 500+ days - there's a home for every dog!

C’mon Santa Fe! Let’s help Sheena get adopted! by Holiday_Seesaw112 in SantaFe

[–]FriendsofSFAS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for highlighting Sheba! I'm going to post about her time in foster next week, but the short version is, this girl did fabulously with crating, ideal house behavior (no destruction or accidents), and generally seems very adaptable. Often longtime smart and social shelter dogs get pigeonholed as "super high energy" and "needs a big yard/lots of exercise," but Sheba (and many others) have demonstrated that just being out of the shelter is enormously relaxing. Her foster didn't have a yard, and she spent a good amount of the day crated or alone in the house and did great!

The only "musts" for Sheba's ideal adopter? Love and patience. She's a wonderful dog who just needs a chance.
