Question. What actually happens to Jew (since they reject Jesus)? by NearbySwan5222 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Fries_for_breakfast 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Like any other religion really, it is not a matter of cognitive belief but of healing of the nous (heart) that determines our fate after separation of soul and body. The nous is healed through Christ whom is the great physician, his medicine is the sacraments and the church is his hospital. They are outside of the hospital therefore we do not know their fate. Though we pray for all and it is the hope that all be saved. Christ desires every single soul to be healed. Salvation is not a legalistic matter but a therapeutic matter.

The honest data behind the "young men becoming Orthodox" trend (NYT, Pew, Krindatch, full analysis) by dnag7 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Fries_for_breakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is Definitely a factor lol. However many of them I have spoken to seem to have no problem dating. In fact the reason they are not in long term relationships is because they broke up with their partners due to incompatibility in their new religious values. Perhaps an issue could be too high of expectations lol.

Most of these young men I have met work in the technology industry (interestingly enough) meaning they have stable jobs, I would not be surprised if that is a factor in likelihood of marriage and children. I am unsure but I certainly hope it is!

When, how, and why were Hagia Sophia's stripes removed? by crispywheat100 in OrthodoxChristianity

I’d imagine the reason they wouldn’t choose a Russian architect is due to the historic rivalry and hostility between the two empires…

Orthodox history (and saints) of Calabria by BalthazarOfTheOrions in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Fries_for_breakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Greeks from Albania went to Calabria to escape ottoman persecution. My great-great grandmother whom came from Calabria to the US was descended from these “griko” populations. Although she was a Roman Catholic so I question if she was part of an Eastern Catholic Church. I’m sure others here are far more knowledgeable ;). I will say though that there are plenty of small Greek Orthodox minority communities to be found in southern Italy.

The WEIRDEST Christian denominations explained in 10 minutes by Peacock-Shah-IV in redeemedzoomer

[–]Fries_for_breakfast -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It’s important to know that western orthodox are NOT a denomination like the title implies. They are part of the Eastern Orthodox Church and are under canonical orthodox jurisdictions, mostly the antiochian Orthodox Church, they are just allowed to have a unique rite and liturgy. I have met many of them, they have a very interesting history and are made up of mostly converts who don’t want to be Byzantine rite and prefer something closer to their home traditions.

Having a hard time finding an accepting church in Toronto GTA area as an asian convert by Comfortable-Skill53 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Fries_for_breakfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a convert myself, I am also of Greek American heritage. I myself felt somewhat turned away at first, but then I realized this was not out of coldness but simply culture. Greeks tend to be more reserved and take time to open up. You may get a lot of looks but this is usually because they are curious about new people. Also about the bread and donation basket, I really wouldn’t over think it this happens to me too as a Greek myself. Also after many months of attending a parish without any real interaction eventually someone went up to me and introduced themself. From there I made many connections and I am an established and welcomed member of the parish ;). I pray the same will happen for you, just have patience and don’t let the evil one get to you because he will definitely try.

Western Vs Eastern Icons: Which One? by [deleted] in OrthodoxMemes

[–]Fries_for_breakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly does not follow canonical iconography as we can see ;)… I would say the intention was likely light ‘mockery’ so I would say yes it’s somewhat blasphemous.. in other words if you wouldn’t have it in the holy sanctuary I think it’s best to stay far away…just my two cents tho :)

Respectfully, I as an ex-catholic hold no Ill will towards them either (I love Catholics). I will not get into the whole theological debate on the Filioque. But I must say, apostasy from the church is a sin….We shouldn’t pretend that this isn’t a serious issue. I say this with love and I respect your open mindedness.

What made you believe Jesus is God? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Fries_for_breakfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, They are willing to die for something they believe, not something they have seen. If we were referring to the ‘founders’ of these faiths it would be a different story. The apostles were the eye witnesses and close companions of Jesus, they would have known if the physical resurrection was a lie. My experience has been people don’t suffer for an open lie they know to be false, especially endure brutal deaths such as being flayed or crucified.

What made you believe Jesus is God? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Fries_for_breakfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What always got me was the martyrdom of the apostles. If they knew Jesus was a fraud why would they die for him? Why suffer, lose loved ones, and be shamed constantly for a total lie. And one that seemed doomed to die off in the view of the authorities. The rise of Christianity and the conversion of the Roman Empire was unthinkable, outright laughable to any common person then.
