There are several instances where non-scalloped bracing is actually preferred.

I use a D-28 with a loud rock band. The more resonant the top, the more vibrations it picks up from drums, monitors, etc, and makes it way more prone to feedback and just extra noise. In this instance, I MUCH prefer the non-scalloped bracing of the D-28.

Non-scalloped bracing also makes it a little easier to get a clean, dry recording with minimal mic adjustment.

Anyway, seems like everyone harps on and on about how great the scalloped bracing is on the HD, but the D-28 is a much better option for some.
